8:22pm: After reaffirming that Rondo and the Lakers had a mutual interest, Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times tweets that L.A. has let it be known that they are only offering one-year deals. Per Turner, Rondo is gauging interest from other teams.
6:31pm: The Lakers have been relatively quiet to start the free agency period but Ramona Shelburne of ESPN notes that the club has given recently waived point guard Rajon Rondo “strong consideration.”
Just yesterday we wrote about how the Lakers had already been in touch with the 31-year-old but it’s worth noting that they’re not the only ones to whom Rondo has been linked, the Clippers and Timberwolves have also been said to be intrigued by the veteran.
In an up and down season for the Bulls, one in which he went from being a prominent free agent signing to out of the club’s rotation altogether, then ultimately re-emerging as a playoff hero, Rondo posted 7.8 points and 6.7 assists per game. It was his mid-season defense of the young players on his roster, however, that may stand out as his most memorable.
With second-overall pick Lonzo Ball now a member of the Lakers, the franchise would be wise to bring aboard a veteran from whom the rookie could learn. Rondo isn’t without his faults but could be a valuable addition to a young locker room eager to improve in 2017/18.
Rondo is the last PG I’d want Lonzo learning from, in both off court and on court terms. I honestly wish Magic would pull some “he’s just not a Laker type of player” bs because of his time with Celtics.
It does make sense for them to target 1 year contract guys so as to keep cap space open for the future.
The other options: Rose, D-Will, Lawson, Collison, Jennings, Felton. Though Collison probably looks for multi years.
I agree. No on Rondo. I’d rather see if Innes keeps improving. He shift just under 40 from 3, he looked good. Don’t know what Waiters is worth but would be a good SG for us. Sign those and move on. Of just leave some cap space in the table for trade deadline and maybe pick up a draft pick with expiring contract.
*that was…he SHOT just under….
Waiters is likely getting between $15-17 million per for 3-4 years. His deal could be tradable though, if he plays the way he did when he was healthy last year. I probably don’t see you guys doing that if you’re trying to make sure you preserve cap space. If he comes in there and gets hurt all season again, or the jumpshot doesn’t fall, you’re back with a bad contract
Not for nothing but that’s not a great list for potential mentor/role model lol
OMG, PLEASE sign him, Magic! PLEASE!!!!!!
lol
I think Rondo would be perfect. We don’t want to eat into 2018 salary cap so a one year with a team option for a 2nd would do with Rondo and if Ball struggles which sometimes these rookies do then Rondo can step in and help the team out. I just can’t wait to see if we make any moves at the trade deadline and next off season. I think it was obvious we were tanking last year so I also want to see what this team can do when they are actually trying.
Perfect? He can’t shoot, has a attitude
Problem. Just let the kids play.
Has an attitude problem says the media and says a few teammates? Most of his teams love the guy, he plays hard every game which is the perfect way to lead by example. Show the kids how to play hard every single game even if you’re losing. He also is a assist machine and could be good with Ball. Everyone acts like they know people just because of the crap they read. Hate to break it to you kids but 90% of the junk you read is just rumors.
Maybe 90% of what people read is rumors, but Rondo 100% got voted off the Mavs playoff roster by his teammates
Magic and pelinka said they were
Looking for players w/high character
And shooters. That’s 2 strikes. Next!
Ramona Shelbourne is the Peter Gammons of the NBA!
Peter Gammons is better looking than Ramona, no joke. And Gammons looks like death warmed over.
Rondo would fit Houston, the Cavs, Nets, Lakers, Sacramento, and Denver
I think he could be a good veteran PG around shooters. The Lakers are trying to put that in place.
That being said, I dont see him getting multiple years from any of those teams.
I guess magic boosting balls ego and wanting to retire his jersey some day is all bs that he doesn’t even believe. They just gave away a point guard with better numbers than ball will ever have. What’s next, bring Phil back?
Watch him get 20 mil the way the NBA is dishing out $$$$$
He should be happy with 2 grand per month the way he plays and acts.
do any of u guys watch basketball… rondo makes everyone around him better… who cares about his attitude…all NBA players have an attitude.. ball is just like rondo… that’s y the Lakers want him… young ball needs to learn from him… but he won’t go their…
There
I think he’ll go to Charlotte and backup Kemba Walker. I know they signed MCW but Rondo seems like a better option and they still have money available.
I really hope he goes there, but that’s just because I’m not a fan of the Lakers
