JULY 8, 6:55pm: Redick’s signing is official, according to an email from the Sixers.
JULY 1, 3:11pm: The Sixers and veteran sharpshooter J.J. Redick have reached an agreement on a one-year deal, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. While the contract will be a short one, Redick will do well on the annual salary — the deal will be worth $23MM, per Wojnarowski. The Timberwolves and Nets were also reportedly contenders for Redick, and he had expressed interest in joining former Clippers teammate Chris Paul with the Rockets.
Philly was the first team that Redick met with once free agency was underway last night. During ESPN’s live television coverage, Wojnarowski noted that the Sixers wanted to convince Redick to accept a short-term contract, “a one-year deal at a very big number, $20 million-plus, potentially.” It appears the team accomplished its goal, landing one of the best long-range gunners in the league without sacrificing future cap flexibility. Redick’s agent, Greg Lawrence of Wasserman Media Group, and Sixers President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo completed talks on the deal this afternoon, league sources told Woj.
Redick certainly had no shortage of suitors early on, with the Timberwolves one of the more aggressive teams that the guard had interest in joining, per Jon Krawczynski of The Associated Press (Twitter link). The unrestricted free agent was willing to consider a multi-year offer from Minnesota for less than the one-year pact he agreed to with Philly, but that notion didn’t gain traction with the Wolves, Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN tweets.
It’s worth noting that this agreement was locked down just after Andre Iguodala canceled his meeting with the Sixers. There is certainly a possibility that Philadelphia upped its offer to Redick after being spurned by Iggy, so that the franchise could secure at least one of its top veteran targets this summer. The team still has approximately $27MM in available cap space to pursue other free agents, notes Zach Lowe of ESPN (Twitter link).
The 33-year-old was originally selected with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Magic. His career numbers are 11.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists through 690 regular season contests. His shooting numbers are a stellar .447/.415/.888. Last season he appeared in 78 contests for the Clippers, averaging 15.0 points and connecting on 44.5% of his shots from beyond the arc.

Wow
Reddick getting paid, then gets to chase rings on his next contract.
That is a lot of money. I wonder if they think he is going to come off the bench? I know it probably isn’t what the 76ers fans want but they should tank one more year. Here is my reasoning. Luca Donich(or however you spell it) he is an amazing 2 guard that will go very high in the draft next year. They should also move Simmons back to the 3 and if they can land Donich in the draft next year they will be good to go. A lineup of Fultz Donich Simmons Sarich and Embieed would be scary
Spell their names right.
Please try to spell TLC’s name now that would be fun
Embiid, Saric, Doncic. Atleast you got fultz and simmons right
This is what us Sixers fans wanted
Sixers if healthy playoffs not even a ?
Need one more vet
Amir Johnson is a probable signing but Sixers should try to sign Ingles to a similar 1 year deal
Ingles is gonna get paid. Not sure there’s enough opportunity in PHI for him to be interested.
You’re right. It is not even a question that they will miss the playoffs.
Sixers trying to be contenders
Great deal for both JJ and Sixers.
But even if they are successful this year they have the assets needed to trade up I. The draft and perhaps even snag the 1st overall pick via trade for the second year in a row and the third consecutive year of having the 1st overall pick.
Sixers are officially winning 50 games.
can I have what you’re smoking Hahahaha. they can’t stay on the court
In how many combined seasons?
One Melo away from eight seed.
23 million is insane but they will definitely make the playoffs now.
So stupid Front Office Mamamia he is sooo old and can only shoot Unforgettable
“He can only shoot” -Sixers needed a shooter. And you’re right…this season will be unforgettable because they’ve finally turned the corner and will make the playoffs.
He is one of the best 3 point gunners in the league, the sixers will have future cap flexibility due to it being a one year deal. You are uninformed.
Wow…I thought he could get a good long term deal at like 16 million per for 2 guaranteed, and a partial guarantee on the 3rd year
Well, that team definitely seems interesting if everyone stays healthy…theoretically…
He got 23 million for one year, even if he blows he will sign a new contract somewhere. You had him at 2 years at 16 million each. His next contract will be more than 9 million a year plus he can move around the league looking for championships. The NBA is going to become a 1 year or 2 year contract league with large pay outs.
But he’s 33…I’d take the guaranteed money. And the 3rd year would still have had a partial guarantee in my scenario, but maybe nobody was offering that…I could have seen at least 12-14 million per for at least guaranteed 3 though
It’s actually really smart for JJ. A big payday, a nice mentoring role, and then chase rings later.
c Embiid-Holmes-Okafor
f Simmons-Rco-Saric-Luwawu-Anderson
g Fultz-Redick-Bayless-Stauskas-McConnell-Korkmaz
If they add Amir Johnson, its gonna get real interesting seeing which players end up sitting on a nightlybasis, barring any trades ofcourse.
Oh please, Amir Johnson was barely playing 20 minutes in Boston for a team that needed rebounding and rim protecting. Amir Johnson would purely be a veteran mentor to provide injury insurance in Philly.
I understand hes coming in as a veteran leader.that doesnt change the fact that theres 15 players on the roster that has a legit case to play every night.lets just say the 3 sitting to open the season are Korkmaz,Okafor and Anderson….Korkmaz could use court time for developing,Okafors trade value wont increase in street clothes, and Anderson sitting makes the Noel trade look like a waste.and you can go through every player and make similar cases.
You’re saying “oh please” like im saying Johnson needs to come in and play 30 minutes, and thats not even remotely close to what I said.
Sixers have given every team a blueprint of how to build a team for 5 year runs and then how to tank for 5-7 years until you build enough assets and then sign a super star to be a real contender. Won’t be long until the Hinkie rule comes into effect. He’s going to be the highest sought after GM.
Can’t say that I hate this. I would have preferred they did this deal with a Stretch-4 ish player like Gallinari or play him at the 3 and Simmons at the 4. Who you could play at the 4 next to Embiid. The only problem I see with this is that it steals minutes away from a developing TLC unless they plan to play him at the 3 and bring Covington off the bench.
TLC when he was given the green light at the end of the season showed he can BALL-OUT. So..
Fultz – Bayless
JJ Reddick – Stauskas
TLC – Covington
Simmons – Saric
Embiid – Okafor
Really is not a bad squad at all.
Saric is the 4 Simmons is a 3.
They’re both 3/4’s
Simmons can play both. He might be too slow to guard most 3s but doesn’t have the prototypical 4 body.
I think this let’s you see what you can get for Bayless or McConnell at the deadline from a desperate team.
Or sooner.with Redick and Korkmaz,we’ll be at 14 players that all have legit cases for playing time.and the offseason still hasnt really begun.still always a chance we can put together a package to upgrade the current roster.
Now 15 strong, with Amir Johnson signing
Anderson or Covington could be moved. I would move Covington bc I think his value has peaked. Okafor and Covington.
The tank masters sign redick! Sixers in the
Lottery again! HaHa!!
Say no to drugs
To late to warn that guy
No such thing as a bad one year deal in sports especially the NBA
Love this for the Sixers. This is right up there with Jeff Green’s infamous one year $15M contract with the Magic (but there’s not a doubt in my mind he’ll perform better than Green did)
All this isn’t gonna matter is their big 3 plays 60 games between them.
Trust the process
Good player not worth 20million
6ers are still under the cap,and they get 1 of the better 3 pt shooters in the league.
Ill take Redick at 23m for 1yr over Hardaway for 71 over 4….or most other contracts that have been giving out the last 2 offseasons.if we tried getting him for 15 or 18,he might be wearing another uniform.
I’m not a sixers fan but they are gonna be interesting to watch this year. Definitely a playoff team.
Harden gets 40+ a year… only makes sense JJ gets 23. I wish I were 5 inches taller, could jump and didn’t shoot like Bill Cartwright. I’d be making bank on someone’s bench.
