JULY 8, 6:57pm: Johnson’s signing is official, the Sixers announced in an email.
JULY 1, 6:25pm: The Sixers and Celtics discussed a sign-and-trade involving Jahlil Okafor for Johnson, but the deal never materialized, Wojnarowski said on ESPN’s televised coverage of free agency.
5:09pm: Amir Johnson will join the Sixers on a one-year, $11MM deal contract, tweets Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com.
The 11-year veteran started 77 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per night. He made $12MM this year in the final season of a two-year contract.
There had been rumors that the Celtics were interested in a sign-and-trade with the Sixers involving Johnson, but this appears to be a straight free-agent signing.
The Bulls, Raptors and Rockets also expressed interest in Johnson, and all three teams had meetings with him scheduled for today.
Sixers adding nice veteran additions
Eh this one not a fan of unless they think he’s going to hit 3s at 40% and more than .8 shots a game.
If they us him right unlike the C’s IMO on offense put him under the rim and get rebounds and put backs nothing more no need for him to be out past the foul line and on D same thing blks and boards
They might move Holmes and something in a deal. Or they could use the depth, considering Embiid, Simmons, and Okafor’s injuries…he’s a good player. Can cover ground defensively and block some shots, and he has a low key mid range jumper that he can stretch out to the 3.
Clogging the lane if Embiid is healthy isn’t a great plan. If he was a stretch 4 I’d say it’s good. But I think he’s just Embiid injury insurance since they probably move Okafor. So you’d have Johnson and Holmes if Embiid fulfils his Oden prophecy. Otherwise he could be traded as an expiring contract if they are not in the playoff hunt.
Why would Philly agree to a sign and trade when they still have a lot of cap room left?
Then they could get rid of a guy they don’t like and still have room to sign more free agents.
Yea,i thought “i bet they were”….im sure every team would rather do a sign and trade and get something, rather than nothing for their free agents.
Come on bro… Seriously? You a real fan or fair weather? Anyone who actually follows this team knows they want to dump Okafor and Boston loves him.
Are you a fair weather fan? Because if they wanted to just dump him, they wouldve.they’ve ate how many players salaries over these last few years?
Colangelo has said repeatedly that they are willing to deal, but it has to make sense.just simply trading a player for a free agent, when ya have salary cap space, makes no sense.
Good signing. He’s not going to be expected to put up numbers. He’s a scrapper that does all the dirty work. He’ll teach the young kids what it takes to win. Signing him might also mean the end for Okafor before the season starts. No way they trade Holmes. 6ers could win more games than the Phillies. LOL!
Not really into this pickup, Richaun Holmes is a quality backup, I’d rather see him develop than see Amir Johnson cut into those minutes. At least it’s depth I suppose.
Probably
Embiid-Holmes @5
Johnson-Saric @4
Complimentary ones offensive focused other can be boards and defensive
Simmons will be playing the bulk of his minutes at PF. Rotation:
Fultz/Bayless
Redick/Korkmaz
Covington/Luwawu
Simmons/Saric
Embiid/Johnson
And okafor rides the pine or did you forget him? C’s should have taken him
He won’t be here
They’ve been saying that for the past yr and yet nothing I really don’t believe it if they really wanted to dump him they would have I’m sure the C’s would have taken him in one of those trades (aj was a s&t)
No he won’t. Simmons will be running the point.
And be guarding forwards.
Just like LeBron plays point
Johnson was not great I like the Celts I mean it would be nice to have a decent backup for taytum but either way I really don’t care
How does amir fit into there offense and they really need to make a move or three to open up there roster
He’s a veteran presence who will help them reach the cap floor. That’s about it. Although he’ll have some value as he can actually stay healthy.
He brings veteran leadership to our young core, and we steal that veteran leadership off of the Celtics.
And we might have a full 15 man roster right now,but we dont really have to do anything.theres gonna be players who could play not dressing some nights.we still have the 2 2way contracts to give any players impressing in the summer league.moves could still be made, but they dont necessarily have to happen.
Johnson will be a solid vet who will also be a great locker room leader for all the young 76ers.
