While a handful of Western Conference teams have made major roster moves so far this offseason, the Grizzlies have been fairly quiet. The team reached an agreement to sign Ben McLemore, but also lost Zach Randolph and has yet to lock up its other free agents like JaMychal Green and Tony Allen.
With their window of contention potentially closing, would the Grizzlies consider moving Marc Gasol? Two league executives suggest to Chris Mannix of The Vertical that Gasol is a player worth keeping an eye on as a possible trade candidate. Mannix’s note is tucked away in a larger piece about the Celtics‘ next moves, and as he points out, Gasol would make a lot of sense as a target for Boston. However, there’s no indication that any talks have happened or that Memphis is even considering such a roster shake-up, so it sounds like speculation at this point.
Here’s more from around the Western Conference:
- Teams are calling the Nuggets to inquire about Kenneth Faried, tweets Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype. With Paul Millsap arriving in Denver, the Nuggets’ frontcourt is getting crowded, and the team probably wouldn’t mind getting out from under Faried’s contract, so a trade remains a possibility.
- Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News, who reported on Tuesday that the Pacers might be interested in working out a sign-and-trade deal with the Timberwolves for C.J. Miles, suggests that Indiana is further along on a Miles sign-and-trade scenario with another team (Twitter link). Meanwhile, Minnesota is waiting on Nick Young, having made him a two-year offer that is likely worth the room exception, tweets Wolfson.
- In other Timberwolves news, first-round pick Justin Patton won’t be participating in Summer League with the club, having suffered a foot fracture during a workout, the team announced on Tuesday. Patton underwent surgery to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot and will be sidelined indefinitely, per the team.
I’d much prefer Gasol over Drummond. We’ve gotta clear this logjam at 3, time to part with Crowder and some Picks.
C’s trying to trim payroll to make Hayward’s new deal fit, I don’t see how it could take on Gasol’s contract in addition. Now that Hayward has been added would the C’s overpay in players and draft pick(s) for Porzingas?
Celtics should try and get Drummond from the pistons.
Same problem with Drummond as Gasol, how do the C’s fit in his contract when it is trying to trim payroll just to make Hayward’s new deal fit?
By asking the other teams to take on part of his salary for extra pick or specific players that they (C’s) may not want to give up
Pretty cool to have a guy covering the Twolves named Wolfson
He’s making big money….. how do we fit him under the cap
I can’t figure that out either. Makes all the sense from a player standpoint, but the number don’t add up without gutting the bench
Wow I could imagine Gasol with Horford, Hayward, and Thomas. Why not move Tatum for Gasol and shoot for Michael Porter Jr next draft?
Thomas-Porter Jr-Hayward-Horford-Gasol
RIP Warriors
Porter Jr isn’t making the Celtics a championship lock if they were to add Gasol. I’d still take GSW’s big 4 over a potential Celtics’ big 4 anyday (no one on the Celtics even comes close to Durant and Curry).
Trade Marc Gasol to San Antonio for LaMarcus Aldridge …
interesting
I could see the team the Pacers are talking to being OKC
Disappointed we won’t see Patton in summer league. Was looking forward to that
The Griz are dead
Ainge isn’t making any trades for any stars
And queue the “(insert star player here) to Boston” trade rumors again. Because it worked out when Butler and George were the primary targets right? If Ainge didn’t move assets for Butler or George, he isn’t moving assets for Gasol who is older. Even if a trade did happen, it would almost wreck the rotation considering one of Crowder/Bradley/Smart likely have to be moved for Hayward’s signing to become official and at least one (if not both) of the other two would have to be included in a Gasol deal unless Brown or Tatum are substituted in. The Horford deal is now starting to look worse and worse. He’s definitely not worth what he’s making (and the subsequent cap hit) and the Celtics would either have to find a sucker to take on Horford’s contract, stick with their core until Horford’s deal ends, or gut their rotation.
I could c Crowder being moved for a starting 5. But they won’t get much for him. Maybe a Frank Kaminsky/Cody Zeller/insert big with a passable jumper here but either is bad defensively or bad offensively.
