The Wolves are working on signing Andrew Wiggins to a five-year, maximum salary extension, Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune reports. However, Hartman cautions that those talks are in the early stages at this point.

“First of all, I think he likes it here, we like him, he can get the very best contract from me, better than he can get from anyone else,” Owner Glen Taylor said. “I don’t think we have any trouble of offering him the max anyway.”
Taylor added that the team plans on extending Wiggins this offseason and doing the same with Karl-Anthony Towns next summer.
“We are talking to [Wiggins’] agent right now about extending him out another five years, so we can do that,” Taylor said. “Karl, we won’t do that until next year. Wiggins, we want to sign him to a long-term contract, we want to keep him here, and we’re negotiating with his agent. But we just started that negotiation, and we have quite some time to get that done.”
Taylor believes the negotiations should be harmonious since Wiggins will get the maximum amount possible under the new CBA. “We’re not really negotiating anything like that [money],” Taylor said. “There shouldn’t be any problem.”
The exact monetary amount of the extension won’t be known until next offseason when the 2018/19 salary cap details are calculated. Based on projections, a five-year, max extension for Wiggins would net him slightly under $148MM, as Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors recently shared.
120 Mio for 5 years is perfect for him
Early stages? He wants the max, they are willing to give it….how long should this take?!?!?!?
148 Million for Wiggins?? wtf is going on in the nba?
25% of the cap. Same percentage as max players on their 2nd contracts have been making for years
Each team can afford two Max guys and then fill out the roster with whoever. Erases the super teams.
So with the Wolves, your to Max guys will be Wiggins and Towns and Butler will be elsewhere in a year or two.
you can go over the cap to resign your own players or else warriors would be broken up already
Yes but that tax gets pretty heavy. I think green and Thompson took less than they could have gotten. Barnes said no and walked
Pretty sure they said no to Barnes…KD
KD is the result of Barnes not signing the year before when he was eligible for his rookie extension.
I think after the third year or maybe the second you can sign the extension… I forget what it’s called.
Thompson said yes, Green said yes, but Barnes said no and played out his rookie contract whatever it’s called. He then became a restricted free agent and the Warriors we’re not willing to pay him 23 million.
That’s what put the wheels in motion to recruit KD (players in his ear, esp Green all season) and eventually sign him in the summer.
They offered Barnes the same deal as Green and Thompson. They would have loved to keep that young team together another 4 years.
I love Wiggins he deserves big money but there needs to be some degree of separation with salaries.
The max isn’t for everyone who’s better than average. Either the max should be reserved for superstars and the other all-star snubs have their own bracket or the stars demand max so the superstars are just a bargain relatively speaking.
lol. Let’s not play around. Wiggins development has been disappointing. He can score the basketball. No doubt. But does he do anything at else well? Anything? Like he’s got the body it seems to be a great all around player but I don’t think he’s worth the max. Wolves need to make the playoffs once before locking down these 2 guys
At least to max contracts*
I agree that Wiggins should not get the max and honestly if they can trade him for Kyrie, do it in a heart beat. Wiggins is a good guys and a good player but he’s not KAT, who should/will get the max. Wiggins CAN be a good to great defender, which I think Thibs can get out of him but he needs to learn to pass the ball because he’s not an elite shooter by any means so if he gets stopped on the drive he becomes an above average player.
