Trade discussions between the Knicks and Rockets regarding Carmelo Anthony have been “fairly dormant” as of late, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (video link). Wojnarowski suggests that the Rockets have been unsuccessful to date in their search to find a third or fourth team to facilitate a potential deal.
Back in July, as they brought aboard former Kings executive Scott Perry and made other changes to their front office, the Knicks put Anthony trade talks on hold. However, once Perry got settled and the Knicks re-assessed their options, the team re-engaged with the Rockets.
Although the lines of communication are once again open between the Knicks and Rockets, the same roadblocks remain in place. As has been the case all summer, New York has no interest in taking back Ryan Anderson‘s contract, and it would be difficult for the Rockets to match salaries without including the veteran sharpshooter. Houston would have to find a third team to take on Anderson, but that appears to have been a dead end so far.
Anthony holds a no-trade clause and the Rockets have long been his preferred destination. In the wake of this week’s Kyrie Irving trade, there has been speculation that Carmelo may once again become open to the idea of going to the Cavs, but even if he’s willing to waive his no-trade clause for Cleveland, it would be a challenge for the Cavs and Knicks to find a deal that appeals to both teams.
While the Cavs were able to find a trade partner for Irving with a month to go before training camp, the Knicks and Rockets are preparing for the possibility that Anthony may still be a Knick when camp opens in late September, per Wojnarowski.
In theory Melo could stay for another year after this upcoming one. If the awkwardnesses get ironed out this year he might do that. IDK how good or bad this is viewed by fans, team or FO. Would a low playoff seed be a goal, or a distraction/delay from a rebuild?
And no, Houston will not come through, at least with anything equal to Melo. Melo has an NTC but in effect, so does mgmt.
They won’t get anything near his value
True, but should they trade anyway; and if so, what would the goal be? A short-term PG, or maybe a different overpaid package with a draft pick or quality prospect. Future or present?
Knicks won’t bring him back. This is more than just awkwardness. This is a guy who was publicly taunted by the FO. You can blame PJ if you want, but nobody else in FO publicly defended him either. He wants to leave and Knicks told him they were trading him to Houston weeks ago. A deal was in place and knicks backed out at the last minute. A deal like that is nearly impossible to recreate. So he’s gonna be pissed cause knicks didn’t do what they said. Rockets offer won’t change because they know that Melo only makes them better if they add him to what they got or swap him for Anderson. Anything else doesn’t make them better so it doesn’t make sense to do. Houston is going to watch the Melo / Knicks divorce happen and go from there. Melo isn’t going to change his mind. If the knicks only leverage is the threat of bringing him back, then knicks have no real leverage, because THEY don’t want to bring him back. Buyout negotiations.
Don’t believe he’s going to Houston, Ryan Anderson is a role player. I’m a neutral fan, but would a Love/Shump/Nets pick for Melo and Zingas be a good trade for both teams?
This is laughable. Porzingis alone could net that package. Porzingis isnt getting traded. You looking at more like melo for TT, shump and the nets pick. Why you think boston included that pick in the trade. The nets will not be anywhere near as top 5 bad this year. In all likelihood the Brooklyn Nets will be better than the New York knickerbockers this year. Likely speaking Carmelo Anthony will most likely stay with the knicks the entire season and depending on what LeBron D Wade and Chris Paul do in free agency they could all come to the knicks next year. All of that is more likely than porzingis getting traded.
The Knicks are bad but no way are they worse than the Nets. Honestly, if the Knicks can play an ounce of D and not have to worry about the silly triangle offense every night, they might actually make the playoffs if Melo stays. We were pretty decent until Phil mandated we run the triangle in mid-season.
Having a PG who actually can pass AND shoot should be an improvement as well.
No team will sign all four players. That pipe dream is never going to be a reality. Three out of those four players are on a decline career wise. Wade will never return to his old form. No disrespect toward his greatness but Ware is barely a backup sg at this point in his career. Melo and Paul are 2-3 years away from becoming bench players and James is selfish and greedy meaning he will leave the Cavs high and dry for greener pastures.
It’s funny how so many fans around the NBA keep throwing Porzingis into hypothetical trades. Would the Cavs trade James to land Melo? No. Would the Rockets trade Harden to land Melo? No. Would the Thunder trade Westbrook for Melo? No. So why would the Knicks trade Porzingis just to trade Melo? They wouldn’t.
Porzingis is not at their level… indeed his level-headedness might be a concern. Take it easy with the pressure NYers!
I just can’t see any trade working, anywhere
No surprise. Houston doesn’t have anything to offer.
The nets will definitely be worse than the Knicks. And no way the trade that pick for Melo. It’s doubtful that he even gets the Cavs pick for next year, which is going to be close to the end of the first round.
