Free agent big man Thomas Robinson worked out for the Celtics on Monday, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Chris Forsberg. Robinson remains on the open market following the expiration of his contract with the Lakers.
The fact that the Celtics are working out Robinson after agreeing to sign undrafted rookie L.J. Peak is interesting. Heading into their blockbuster deal with the Cavaliers, the Celtics had contract agreements in place with 20 players, the offseason maximum. Having sent three players to Cleveland in exchange for Kyrie Irving, Boston opened up two spots on its 20-man offseason roster and now has just 14 players on guaranteed salaries.

As Forsberg notes at ESPN, Boston may just be doing its due diligence on Robinson, but the team’s need for rebounding and interior toughness would be even more glaring with Ante Zizic headed to Cleveland. The Celtics’ interest in Robinson and their commitment to Peak may signal that they expect the Irving trade to get done as is — or with minor tweaks.
A former fifth overall pick, Robinson has failed to live up to his pre-draft billing, but was a solid role player for the Lakers in 48 games last season. Averaging just 11.7 minutes per contest, Robinson chipped in 5.0 PPG and 4.6 RPG to go along with a career-best .536 FG%.
So long as Celtics fans don’t start throwing themselves into the Charles because “minor tweaks” means Tatum or the Lakers pick, bc your GM tried to pass off a guy with a shredded hip as a primary asset, then yeah it gets done. Delusional fans who just wanna cry and complain and not win be trifling to Danny.
I think the most a “minor tweak” is would be Rozier and a 2nd or the Memphis pick and a 2nd. If they want to restructure the deal and swap Tatum out for IT but also send something else Boston’s way, I guess that’s possible but unlikely.
That’s waaaaay too much. Just a second round pick or tell Cleveland to take a hike
Just don’t see them including Rozier. Ainge really likes the kid and with the lack of depth at guard, he’ll get a chance to play in a regular rotation. As this article suggests, they need rebounding. If Cleveland digs in their heels, I would still walk away from the trade, draft a point guard with either the Nets or Lakers pick next year, let IT get his deal somewhere else and still be set for the future.
Sorry. As I re-read my comment, I realized that I cut short what I wanted to say about them needing rebounding, which was that they’d get Crowder and Zizic back. That would go a long ways toward helping in that area.
A minor tweak is a late first or a secon round pick. Trading one of the best players in this year’s draft or last year’s draft is stupid.
You do know that Boston fully disclosed the he injury, right?
Wow, big time desperation if they’re checking out Thomas Robinson. 6-6 power forward who can’t shoot, can’t create, and can’t play in the nba.
Oh, I forgot… he’s got that major skill that all you guys here like, and want to pay big dollars, and big contracts for: He hustles.
Disclaimer: Robinson is really 6-7, but claims to be 6-10. If he can add 3 inches, I can with the same liberty, take away 1.
Obviously Gary ate a lot of paint chips as a child.
At least they tasted good. Nice between meals snack :)
if he figures out the FT issues he’s be much better.
