In a span of three months, Scott Perry went from being cast aside by a moribund Magic franchise to a sound front office hire for the Knicks. Marc Berman of the New York Post recently wrote about the underdog’s meteoric rise up the executive landscape.
While Perry did little to draw attention to himself under the tutelage of then-Orlando general manager Rob Hennigan, he quickly found himself the executive vice president of a Kings team that desperately needed reinvention.
Perry’s tenure in Sacramento, however, didn’t last. On July 13, three months after leaving the Magic and making a handful of heady decisions for Sacramento, Perry was plucked away from Vlade Divac to be the general manager of the Knicks.
During his brief stint with the Kings, Perry guided the franchise through an impressive draft that yielded the likes De’Aaron Fox, Justin Jackson and Harry Giles. He also landed notable veterans George Hill and Zach Randolph to monitor and mold those youngsters.
“One of the more amazing front-office sagas I can ever remember,” longtime NBA executive Pat Williams told Berman for his in-depth long-read. “Scott’s dismissed in mid-April, within 48 hours he’s talking with Sacramento and ends up hired by the Knicks in probably the most important front-office job in the NBA — GM of the Knicks.”
There’s more from the Eastern Conference:
- If Abdel Nader is going to score a long-term role with the Celtics, he’ll need to establish himself as a 3-and-D player, A. Sherrod Blakely of CSN New England writes.
- The Knicks are Kyrie Irving‘s first choice, according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog. Irving had previously listed four teams that he’d prefer the Cavaliers trade him to last month, the others being the Timberwolves, Spurs or Heat.
- The fact that Pistons general manager Jeff Bower took time aside to work with then-free agent Eric Moreland on his game during summer league influenced his decision to sign a three-year deal with the franchise, Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press writes. “I’ve been with like three teams now and they can be down to earth as much as they want but they not about to come out and shoot free throws with you and try to help you and see something you,” Moreland said.
I am solely commenting for the excellent mention of the word, moribund!! Not to mention, the writer also, successfully and seamlessly used the word correctly in an article about basketball!!…To you good sir, Austin Kent, I say job well done…lol
What does moribund mean?
it describes someone who doesn’t know how to use google! kidding aside, it means dying, declining, stagnant and so on.
Kyrie on a bad Knick team would be no better than Stephon Marbury and would probably cost the Knicks Porzingis or multiple 1st round draft (lottery) picks…So if Scott Perry is truly a smart front office man he blocks Clevelands number.
Ya there is no point in even saying which team he wants to go to most. The Knicks would have to give up everything to get him and the cavs shouldn’t be interested in what they are offering.
Dunno man, getting a franchise player in Kyrie for two years on a relatively cheap contract and shedding the last remnants of PJax mess ain’t a bad thing at all. Trouble is Zinger a bad fit in CLE with Love there. So… community here is always good for batshit stupid trades. Let’s hear it guys. Get Melo to the Rockets, loop in a 4th or 5th team, work it out. Maybe something half way sensible emerges, however unlikely.
Can’t wait to see how little cavs get for Kyrie….I will have a few choice comments for mr. Dilbert as payback for his snide remarks about Pacers return for PG.
Gilbert may have been trying to brace Cavs fans about what the market is like for high-salary players in trading… Irving won’t draw what the home fans think is a good value and the FO will likely take some heat for any deal… the key is to find motivated buyers.
Getting Kyrie would require Ntilikina and probably two future picks. Knicks go from rebuilding and drafting a Bridges,Bagley,Ayton,Doncic in the draft to a playoff team with possibly title contention assuming Porzingis indeed becomes the perennial all-star he is projected to be. Kyrie Irving would easily become the most popular Knick of all time if he decides to extend 2 years from now.
It would take some different assets. If you kicked in another player like O Quinn if he is still there or another similar cheap role player, you might have something. Also, unless the Knicks have like 10-15 mil in cap space that doesn’t work. Irving makes 18 and Ntilikina is on his rookie deal. The value there is reasonable, assuming the picks come in the near future and are unprotected, or only top 3 protected. However, CLE seems to want to shed salary and compete now. Ntilikina and picks helps shed salary but not compete. Porzingis, O Quinn, a future first, and a 2nd sounds about right.
Seems like Knick fans should be confident he will re-sign; NY is what he wants!
For salary matching, Porzingis4 + Oquinn4 + Courtney Lee11 works for Irving 19 and provides for a guard replacement. For the Cavs, everyone spread out and Rose will be the post player!
But I doubt zinger gets traded, and subbing Frank N for him won’t please James. Subbing in draft picks won’t please the ‘astute’ new GM and to my knowledge does not make the trade more ‘legal’.
It will still take a multi-teamer…
Best move for Irving is going to the Suns for Bledsoe and Bender !
Booth teams is that a good move.
Bender lol. I wouldn’t take that bust if they were giving him for free.
