The Wizards have gone all-in on preserving their core and head coach Scott Brooks understands just how important that can be. Brooks has, Chase Hughes of CSN Mid-Atlantic writes, seen what happens when a promising young roster falls apart thanks to his time with the Thunder.
“We have our three players that we drafted all wanting to stay here and stay long-term,” the Wizards’ bench boss said. “That’s good. That’s good because if you don’t have your best players wanting to stay here, then nobody wants to stay here.”
Thanks to Wizards’ owner Ted Leonsis‘ willingness to commit to their young players, Washington was able to match the offer sheet that the Nets signed Otto Porter to this summer and then follow that up with a supermax contract extension for John Wall.
Under their current deals, Wall, Beal and Porter will be under Wizards control for seven total years. Eight, if Porter ultimately exercises his player option for the 2020-21 season.
There’s more from the Eastern Conference:
- After assigning challenges to Isaiah Thomas and DeMar DeRozan, Kobe Bryant was asked to give one to Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Black Mamba responded with three letters: MVP. An NBA.com report has details.
- This will be Goran Dragic‘s last stint with the Slovenian national team, Niki Lupo of Sportando writes. The 31-year-old Heat guard tweeted that he’ll be done with the program following Eurobasket 2017.
- If the Cavaliers and Celtics start formally renegotiating the Kyrie Irving trade, the Cavs are expected to inquire about the C’s young players. Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, that could include Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, although their involvement in any actual deal remains highly unlikely.
Cleveland clearly doesn’t drug test their front office personnel.

Great post. Sure laughed. Thanks.
There is no way the Celtics would give up tatum or brown. NBA trades should be pending a physical
The Cavs are trying for them but it’s easy for the Celtics to be like, nah we’ll take back IT, Crowder, and the pick, in return here are some chemistry issues! You’re welcome, have fun as the #2 seed again!
The Cavs then say, “Congratulations, you played yourself because we can still trade Kyrie while you have to deal with a disgruntled Isaiah because you won’t be able to trade him due to his upcoming free agency and injured hip.”
C’s out of the picture, Irving’s value just plummeted as teams know that Cavs do not want Irving in training camp. AND, Cavs do not get Nets unprotected first rd pick next year.
You are silly. His stock hasn’t plummeted at all especially since training camp hasn’t even started yet. Cavs can very easily revisit the teams that were interested in Irving prior and there should be ZERO reason they should be offered any less than before.
Ironically, and it shows your bias, if ANY players stock has plummet it’s Thomas’. It’s public knowledge that Thomas was hurt that the Celts traded him. Many fans were upset about it. Now teams know that his hip injury may be far worse than what the Celts let out. He is not every bit of a distressed asset and to an extent far more than Irving or even Melo. Add to the fact that he’s an impending FA and that hurt feelings may play a role for the Celts locker room and I would suggest that the Celtics want this deal to happen just as much, if not more, than the Cavs. The Cavs still have other options. Keep in mind that it was reported the Suns offered Bledsoe, their #1 and another guy. The hold up was that the Cavs wanted them to add Jackson too. But in terms of a current value, I would say that a healthy Bledsoe > than an injured Thomas who might miss considerable time and the Suns pick = to the Brooklyn pick since the Suns had the 2nd worse record in the NBA behind Brooklyn. It’s not even hard to imagine that the Suns with Irving might end up with the same record as Brooklyn when taking into account the level of competitiveness between the two conferences. The Suns pick could very well be a top 4 pick as well.
Interesting point how there is so much talk about Brk’s #1 but not Phx’s #1. I like Phx’s more! And that ‘other guy’ could be a swap of Shumpert and TYSON Chandler who could really free up Love. I also like Davon Reed even though he’s an injured second-rounder.
Gilbert might prefer the better-known Thomas, James the mini-Bron Bledsoe. Altman IDK
Dude……NBA trade completions ARE pending a physical, which is exactly what happened. Teams can ask for medical reports. They are reviewed. Then if they want to proceed then you inform the league officials to put it on paper and then you set up for players to come to the city of the team you’re headed to and have a physical examination from each teams perspective medical staff. Irving had his physical in Boston the same day as IT’s I think. Trust me, is there any part of you that thinks Ainge wouldn’t have called off or renegotiated the deal if there was something alarming in Irving’s exam?
Cavs went into this under the knowledge that IT might miss the first two or three weeks of the season. We don’t know this, but what if the Cavs doctors felt there was no way IT could play prior to January or even worse, felt that surgery would be imminent? Could you blame the Cavs for balking at a deal where they don’t have Irving nor IT for the 1st 3 or 4 months or maybe the entire season.
Please use common sense ppl. Cavs were willing to take on a limited risk. Once that risk factor became greater then they did the right thing.
Crazy thought here. Boston made this deal to drive IT off the max asking price because no one thinks he’s healthy. They now extend IT for less than the max, but with a NTC.
Uh, no. Ainge made the deal to add a generational talent, the sort he had failed at adding to this point. Shipping Tatum or Brown does little except hurt the butts of delusional Celtics fans. You guys should make sure Altman never has to buy a drink in Boston ever again. Danny is his own worst enemy and cost the Celtics numerous stars. That he only felt comfortable making a deal when he felt he was fleecing a rookie GM, and got schooled, is irrelevant. Kyrie playing in Celtic green is the win and ultimately what should matter to fans.
Sure, my theory probably wasn’t the main goal, but I also think it means Ainge is going to hold firm and say take it or leave it. Tatum or Brown being added is a gross overpayment, especially if Thomas is fine in 3-4 months.
And in that case, they lose another star. Is Ainge really that stupid? Is he really that terrified of idiot fans and the local media that egg them on? Yes, you’re getting steamrolled by LeBron again. That doesn’t mean you pass on adding Kyrie… or worse, watching a rival add him instead.
So in your statement the C’s should give up ether Brown or Tatum that has to be the dumbest statement ever the C’s need stand there ground and say it’s 2 2nd rounders or nothing ya they may lose out on Kyrie but there’s plenty of players out there they could get during the season everybody’s already saying they can’t get past Cleveland even with Kyrie so if the deal gets nixed o’well so be it they will get back that 1st and a player who will play his best ball yet because he wants the max contract so he’ll have to suc it up and play
Have you ever heard of punctuation?
He used an apostrophe on C’s, everybody’s () and o’well (for some reason……….Oh well)
You got nothing better to do with your life
Fam..Yes….the Celtics won the East Conference top seed. Do you REALLY think that was indicative of which team was better? Who got steam rolled in the playoffs vs the Cavs? Who MIGHT go into the season without IT if he’s injured, and a disgruntled player regardless? Who has traded away Bradley and has zero experienced starters in the back-court? Celtics are in a horrible situation if this falls thru. Cavs have other options, even if it may not be as good. Would still rather have a full season of Bledsor and their #1 than not have IT on the court for a prolonged period of time (meaning more than 2 or 3 weeks).
You say 3 or 4 months as if that’s nothing. Under the current scenario, which team suffers more?
a) Cavs make a trade elsewhere and acquire a PG in the deal. Let’s limit it to the conversations we know have happened. Bledsoe and their 1st round from the Suns or Brogdon and Middleton from the Bucks. They would also have Rose and Calderon as PG depth.
b) Celtics keep Thomas (no one is going to trade for him now) and the Celts, who also traded Bradley, go with some smattering of Demtrius Jackson, Terry Rozier, Marcus Smart and James Young?
How can Celtics fan ever think taking IT back is an acceptable option? How can anyone think that somehow Ainge has leverage over the Cavs? It’s laughable.
If they hand IT a NTC he might still resign, and 3 or 4 months is nothing because Cleveland doesn’t care until the playoffs. If he’s healthy but playing at the same level starting after the all star break, they won’t care. They need him healthy come April.
A guy is offering to sell you a car for $10,000. He tells you that the car needs a couple of repairs. You negotiate a deal and then have it inspected by your mechanic and he tells you that the car needs far more repairs made to it than the previous owner mentioned. Are you still going to pay the agreed to $10k? Give me a break. And for the record, 2nd rnd picks mean almost nothing to a team that either trying to compete OR looking to rebuild. Finding a IT with the last pick in the 2nd round is like hitting the powerball. It seldom happens. 2nd rnd picks are for asset building. Cavs are looking for impact players. Cavs have other options. Celtics don’t.
You think there is only one point guard in the whole league come on now the only thing the cavs have is Kyrie to trade the C’s on the other hand still have plenty of draft picks and young talent so I don’t think they a worried if the cavs pull out if the deal
The Cavs GM is delusional! Young Koby Altman obviously thinks if he asks for the moon he’ll get the stars. Hence, ask for Tatum, walk away from the table, and then actually get the an unprotected Brooklyn #1.
Well now he’s pulling the same tactic in asking for Tatum & Brown and probably hoping Ainge will then just give him the Lakers’ #1 to go away. Just take a Celts 2nd round pick and buzz off because you won’t find a better deal anywhere and Kyrie won’t show up to your camp but no matter how bummed IT is he will play his heart out for the C’s because he’s in a contract year.
Tatum or brown?even if the cavs get both of the celtics still came out ahead!
HaHa
Ease off the Danny Ainge coolade Chun. That would be the worst trade in Celtics history. No way they come out ahead in that scenario.
Sorry face, nose gets it because I’ll show you who’s boss…
Yes, IT has heart. Now…does he have a hip that will hold up for the season?
The Cavs GM is doing exactly what he should. Ask for what you want and negotiate to see what you can get.
Ppl keep bringing up the Irving/Cavs locker room as if the Cavs didn’t have other offers.
And it’s obvious that both the Cavs and Ainge (as he said himself) are seriously concerned as to when IT will even be able to play. How can you ignore that as if that’s not a major concern for BOTH teams?”.
Cavs have leverage simply because they don’t have to trade Irving to the Celtics. And guess what, I can absolutely see trade scenarios involving other teams with potential top 4 picks too.
Knicks with some combo of Melo, a 1st and much more.
Suns with Bledsoe and their #1 (2nd worst record last year)
Bucks with Bogdon, Middleton and a less attractive 1st rnd pick.
And…although not mentioned, if Memphis wants to rebuild they might offer Conley and a 1st rnd pick just to save the difference of guaranteed money between what is owed to Conley (about $124 mil) vs owed to Irving ($38 mil assuming he’ll opt out). The Bucks could even trade Irving in Feb or next offseason for picks as well as trade Gasol and get back some real value to rebuild.
Ainge should void the trade before giving Cavs anything more. Let Kyrie stay…should be an interesting training camp for Cavs. Kyrie does not report…Cavs might do the deal as is.
The clowns don’t belong in the league: Gilbert, Dolan, and Cuban
Was agreeing with you until you said Cuban
And how exactly is any of this Gilbert’s fault? IT’s medicals revealed something worse than expected. Relax.
“”Wall, Beal and Porter will be under the Wizard’s spell for seven years”” [and eight with a player option taken]
Okay I added the ‘spell’ part. But that is only 3 or 4 more years for the trio going forward with 4 done– not 7 or 8 forward–
still pretty special and old-school…
Just joking and clarifying both :)
Calling it right now brown or smart or one of the many first rounders celtics have. I just have a feeling ainge isn’t gonna want egg on this face, he’ll face a lot of scrutiny for nothing following through on this trade. To be honest brown and Tatum are too much of the same especially of you have betrayward. Tatum is better so I’ll assume brown gets moved.
It’s not going to happen the C’s will not give up a player I would be surprised if they even give up a 1st it will 2 2nd rounders and that’s all it should be but we won’t know anything till Wednesday the earliest so we can all speculate till we’re blue in the face let’s just wait and see who blinks first
Celtics can give up Brown but in exchange they get Nets 2018 first round pick back.
No way
Cavs are not getting Brown AND the Nets pick.
He said get the pick back..
I would be actually ok with that. Some of the top talent projected in next years draft are big guys, what the Celtics need..
They don’t need another wing guy
the reply was to ohiodevil, not the original comment. I agree, one or the other
Brown instead of Zizic? Probably Brown would be retraded so Celts probably would not have to go against him.
Kyrie want to help make this deal happen — inform Cavs that he will not waive his 15% trade kicker for any future trades.
Doesn’t matter at all. What is that? An extra $5 mil. Most teams are flush with cash. It’s the talent that is valuable. Cavs could even send $5 mil cash to cover the kicker if they can get the right talent.
Would not be surprising if Cavs had this planned all along. It knew about IT’s hip issue from the playoffs, then had access to C’s medical reports prior to completing the trade. Make the trade then ask for more — I hope NBA tells Cavs to stop sniveling, you made the deal knowing the risk.
Dude…geez. Players take physicals prior to trades being finished. Ainge tried to move a distressed asset and the Cavs did their due diligence and found the injury to be more serious than expected. Stop whining about it. Ainge would, and SHOULD, do the same thing if he found out something about a player he was looking to acquire.
Did Cavs know about IT’s hip before the trade? Yes. Did Cavs have the C’s medical files on IT before trade? Yes. Cavs trying to get extra asset(s) they it could not gain during negotiations? Yes.
Not sure how many times something has to be explained. The medical report was done in the past (obviously) and exchanged on both sides for all players. EVERY TRADE in EVERY league is subject to the player going to the acquiring team and under going a physical conducted by their own medical staff. It was the Cavs medical team that gave them pause. It could be that something got worse than the medical reports indicated, it could mean that the injured hip has not healed since the last medical report, or it could mean that the medical staff said “hey with some treatment he can be ready by November but we would be shocked if he made it thru the season because he should’ve had surgery a long time ago and without it he won’t make it past February”. All of those are reasonable and succinct probabilities. Cavs might have been comfortable with him missing all of training camp and all of October but not willing to not have him until Dec, Jan or whenever. Ainge even admitted that part of the reason why he was willing to move IT (and I assume not extend him) was because of his hip. Do you really think Ainge would’ve said that if all that was expected was for IT to be unavailable for the first month of the season? Ainge’s words and intent support the Cavs medical concerns.
Woj has even reported that celtics are open to adding an additional 1st rounder. They also stated that IT could miss most of the year if he has surgery. The fact ainge is open means he’s trying to get it done sooner rather than later. Ainge stands to lose a whole lot more than the cavs would.
they should ask for marcus smart and another draft pick smart is a above average defender and avearge shooter
Cavs should just say they’ll void the deal on Thursday unless they find some other team(s) to join the deal and reconfigure the package coming back to them so it actually gives them a chance to compete in what could be LeBron’s last season. If Boston wants to reconfigure their package, they can.
Hey T-Wolves. Kyrie Butler and KAT! Are you kidding me?
