The Pistons are interested in star point guard Kyrie Irving, a person with knowledge of the team’s front office tells Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press. As Ellis notes, Detroit’s interest shouldn’t come as a major surprise, considering approximately 20 teams are believed to have inquired with the Cavaliers about Irving.

Pistons head coach and president of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy confirmed that the Pistons have had “some level of conversation” with the Cavs about Irving, Keith Langlois of Pistons.com wrote earlier this week.
In discussing the subject, Langlois says he doesn’t see a logical match between the Pistons and Cavaliers, and Ellis is also skeptical that Irving will land in Detroit. Still, it’s not impossible to envision a package that might interest the Cavaliers.
As Langlois notes, Reggie Jackson or Avery Bradley could make some sense as a point guard replacement for Cleveland, and Tobias Harris may have some appeal to the Cavs. Stanley Johnson, who just recently turned 21, may also be an intriguing long-term piece. The Pistons also still hold all their future first-round picks, and Andre Drummond‘s name has come up in trade rumors multiple times this year.
Although the Pistons could potentially put together a viable trade offer for Irving, it almost certainly wouldn’t be an overwhelming one, so the Cavs will probably look elsewhere unless the other incoming offers for Irving are unimpressive. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that the Pistons aren’t necessarily satisfied to stand pat with their current roster — particularly if an All-Star caliber player becomes available.
Trade Andre Drummond maybe
Harris and Jackson for Kyrie and Frye
How do you come to dumping a 40% 3pt shooter who is 6-11? over a 6-4 sg that can’t shoot.
Probably include unprotected or top 3 protected picks
Terrible
That would be the dumbest thing the cavs could do. Jackson in no where near kyrie, and Harris doesn’t bring it much closer. That would be an awful trade for Cleveland
Harris, Johnson, Bradley for Kyrie and Shumpert
Not even close
What if you add Kennard and a future first?
It’s better. Cavs would have to think long about it. Pistons would too. Essentially giving up everyone that isn’t Drummond for a possible 2 year rental.
a lot can happen in two years. Many players aren’t even on the team until the trade deadline. Must understand that when an elite player comes along, and the team has some assets to send in a deal, you make the deal. 4 quarters don’t equal a dollar in sports.
I agree that if you have the pieces to get a player of Kyrie’s caliber you do everything you can to do it but you can’t give up everything. A duo of Kyrie-Andre is nice but it’s not even close to contending even in a weak East. Leaves them very little trade assets to trade for others players to fill out the roster too. Unless you are extremely confident that you can find ways to fill other needs to make Kyrie want to stay, it’s hard to pull the trigger
It’s not that far away from contending considering the fact that you’re weakening Cleveland. You’re probably a 5-6 seed with those guys and if you can move Jackson for any functional NBA player, you will be ok this year and then gear up for a run in ’19 and try to convince Kyrie to stick around. If they can add an impact FA before they have to max Kyrie they’ll be in good shape. Pistons give up a lot of bodies here and maybe they end up sending Kennard and a 2nd, but they can still fill out their rotation with a couple vets for the minimum.
That’s a lot of “guys” and not any legit star power back, but I’d least consider it even if it didn’t really excite me. As a Cavs fan, I also wouldn’t be surprised if that’s better than any other offer they’d get. I’m hoping for the best but preparing for the worst hahaha
Hold up, I made a few typos…
*I’d at least consider it
*even if it isn’t that exciting
Drummond,Jackson, and Harris for Kyrie and Shump.
Doesn’t work financially
Bradley makes a lot of sense for the Cavs…especially since they suck on defense. He’d be a huge upgrade over Irving in that department. I would bet that the Cavs take an underwhelming offer from the Pistons if they agree to take back some of Cleveland’s crappy long term contracts like Shumpert and/or Smith.
Bradley, R.Jackson, and Drummond for Irving, T.Thompson, and Shumpert works salary wise. There will probably need to be draft picks coming from Detroit.
Bradley would be a great fit in Cleveland but as Kyrie has shown every single time they go head to head, the talent gap between them is huge. As for Jackson I don’t see him playing very well alongside Lebron. Drummond would be a great piece to add, but we aren’t looking to just dump Thompson’s contract.
I would be highly surprised if Cleveland doesn’t get a huge package for Kyrie, he has no control where he goes and he is still under contracts for 2 seasons. We don’t even HAVE to trade him. Not gonna sell him for pennies on the dime
Smith’s contract is not a crappy long term contract. Cavs will keep JR Swish and go to the finals once again.
I am a huge JR fan but he is severely overpaid. Close to 50M over the next 3 years I think. If he continues to play like he did last year his contract will be a dud
Bradley, Bledsoe, warren to cavs
Drummond, shump to suns
Kyrie to cavs
Suns, pistons cavs need to work it out in a 3 way
Makes no sense for Phoenix considering that would leave them with only Ulis at PG and no viable wing besides Booker and Jackson. Not close enough for a Cavs to accept either
Yeah i don’t see the Suns giving up Bledsoe if they don’t get Kyrie. Also do the Pistons get nothing in your trade idea and Kyrie just stays?
Suns don’t want Bledsoe they gave him a phantom injury last year last like 3 weeks of season
That doesn’t mean they don’t want him if it’s true that just means they were trying to lose more games lmao
If suns flip Bledsoe for 23 year old Drummond they won the deal. Monster big man with Chriss and bender to grow with plus booker and Jackson
Add a point guard later but bledsoe isn’t the starter on a championship team anyways
There are zero teams in the NBA that shouldn’t be interested in adding Kyrie. Maybe OKC because Russ couldn’t deal with sharing the ball. He’s too hell-bent on proving he will do it himself. PG13 is totally okay being a side piece; Kyrie wants out of the best situation he could possibly be in because he wants to be Russ.
The Warriors and Rockets have no use for Kyrie
i think phoenix is the best landing spot for kyrie. that could be a team to watch if they could pull it off and keep jackson
Agreed. Just can’t see another team striking a deal for him. Maybe Denver. But Phoenix is the heavy favorite imo
Drummond and Bradley for Irving.
Too much for the Pistons, although I think the Cavs might take the deal.
Not enough actually lol
Bradley, Kennard, Harris, Drummond for Irving, Shumpert, Thompson. Pistons add in a 2019 first. Cavs throw in a 2018 2nd if they have one left.
I think the Piston would pass on this deal. The interesting thing is that fans feel like the Pistons need to give up the world for Irving, but think the Suns giving up Jackson and Bledsoe is too much. Honestly, I would prefer Drummond and Bradley to Jackson (unproven) and Bledsoe (coming off a career year).
This deal was suggested on ESPN.
The Pistons received: Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson.
The Clippers received: Andre Drummond, Stanley Johnson and a future Pistons first-round pick.
The Cavaliers received: DeAndre Jordan and Reggie Jackson.
Someone was smoking some serious stuff at ESPN.
Forreal lol. Cavs want a young budding player still on their rookie deal, a first rounder, and a point guard, one that would play well with Lebron who doesn’t need the ball to make plays. Reggie Jackson doesn’t really fit the mold and while DJ would be a really good addition for us he isn’t worth Kyrie, let alone throwing TT on top of that. Cavs also looking to shed cap and that doesn’t apply
The Clippers get a better return than Cleveland lol.
Cavs want a veteran, and young player, and a first rounder. Drummond, Johnson, and a first rounder.
Need a PG to replace Kyrie. Derrick Rose and Jose Calderon aren’t the answer lol
Why do the Cavs need a point guard Lebron does most of that Avery Bradley is perfect can play without the ball in his hands
Not sure Bradley is on the table. Jackson or Drummond would be the veterans available.
Take Jackson instead of Drummond.
Pistons has nothing to give that’s good for the future for the pistons
Drummond would never work. Remember the Cavs are playing to beat the Warriors. Bradley, Jackson and some combo of Kennard, Stanley, or first round pick.
Bradley Jackson Harris and then flip Jackson for Carmelo ?
Starting 5 Lebron, Bradley, Love, Tristan, Carmelo
I think truly the Cavs end up with Melo in the end they acquire a lesser piece (Bradley) and other assets to trade to NY for Melo
Bench Rose, JR, Tobis Harris
Cavs get Melo, Bradley, Harris
Knicks get Reggie Jackson
Pistons get Kyrie Shumpert and a 2019 Knicks 2nd round pick
Pistons should also get Irving I’d imagine. Also, there’s this little thing called a salary cap. Melo Bradley and Harris combine for like $50 million. Cavs only send out like 30 mil that doesn’t work.
I don’t believe the Cavs absolutely have to trade KI, but if Drummond is in the deal, then the Cavs should find a way to make it work. He’s far and away the best asset that’s been mentioned in these “rumored” trade proposals. Thompson and Jackson would likely have to be included as well in some capacity, so it would be a larger deal with multiple moving parts, but when dust settles the Cavs get a replacement elite talent/player now and going forward.
Piston get kyrie and TT
Cavs get Drummond, reggie, Stanley and a 1st.
Add shumpert if the cap doesn’t fit. Cavs get a better deal than they would with the suns. Pistons trade for a superstar they could build around. Drummond is good but he is not a player you build around.
