For the last month, two stories have consistently remained at the top of the NBA news cycle: When and where will Kyrie Irving and Carmelo Anthony be traded? One of those two lingering offseason questions was answered earlier this week when the Cavaliers granted Irving’s trade request by sending him to Boston. However, there has still been no resolution for the other All-Star on the trade block.
Unlike Irving, who could have been dealt to any of the NBA’s 29 other teams, Anthony has a no-trade clause that allows him to block a move to any club. He has taken full advantage of that clause in his contract, having reportedly expressed a preference to go to Houston. However, trade talks between the Knicks and Rockets are “fairly dormant” — the two teams are at something of impasse, having been unable to find a third or fourth club to help facilitate a deal.
Earlier in the offseason, reports indicated that Anthony would also be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Cavaliers, but that changed at some point. With the Irving situation resolved and Cleveland having secured a strong return for the star point guard, would Anthony reconsider his stance? There’s speculation that could be the case, though nothing concrete has been reported yet. And even if Anthony is on board, the Cavs could face the same challenges the Rockets have as they try to find a trade package the Knicks would accept.
Within his latest report on the Rockets and Knicks, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski indicated that the two sides are preparing for the possibility that Anthony will open training camp as a Knick. That likely won’t thrill the veteran forward, but it makes sense for the Knicks to remain patient if they’ve only received low-ball offers to date. If Carmelo gets frustrated by the lack of movement on the trade front, perhaps he’d be willing to expand his list of preferred landing spots, which could help New York find a more viable offer.
What do you think? By the time opening night rolls around in mid-October, will Anthony still be a Knick? Will he end up being traded to Houston or Cleveland, or will he eventually give the Knicks the go-ahead to send him somewhere else? Don’t know why melo wouldn’t want to team up with Russ and pg in okc. Not like he has to stay long term he has 1 year left on his contract. Why not give it a go
Because it’s Oklahoma. He also has 2 years left. No way he’s going to exercise his opt out in 2018
He’s not going to finish that contract because knicks won’t be able to trade him and he’s not staying in NY. Melo is a star. He’ll still be making money long after basketball . He’s going to give up some of that contract so he can leave and go where he wants.
He’s a selfish star who refuses to give up the ball even when triple-teamed. Good guy- not a team player
Are you saying that the Melo/Knicks will work out a buyout? In your opinion, how much do you think they settle on?
If the knicks are smart, he’ll still be there by training camp at least.
He’ll still be a Knick. Cleveland would be my next choice. Doubt Houston pulls it off.
knicks, portland or thunder.
He’s not leaving the Knicks lol
He won’t be with Knicks. They are not bringing back a disgruntled Melo, who’s not going to buy in to knicks youth movement. Especially since Knicks told him they would trade him to Houston weeks ago. Bringing him back would only be a circus. They gain nothing from benching him out of spite. It won’t get them a good return either. Rox won’t be any more inclined to gut their depth in February than they are now. They know the only way Melo makes them better is to add him to what they got or swap him with Anderson. Anything else doesn’t make them better. And Melo isn’t going to agree to go somewhere else just for the Knicks. I predict there won’t be a trade now. That window has closed. This is heading towards buyout negotiations. Knicks said they wouldn’t, but they had to say that in order to have at least a chance for a trade. They’re not bringing him back. Only one option left.
As long as Noah and Sessions are the starters, Anthony (and the Knicks) should be gunning for the playoffs. If he looks around and sees Hernangomez and Nkitina, he may as well shut it down.
Beasley would work just as well at SF, especially the way he was hitting 3s last year.
Melo ain’t training at 2am thinking about the knicks making the playoffs. He’s ready to leave and the knicks are ready for him to leave too. No way knicks want him on the roster when the season starts. Look out for a buyout.
Dolan won’t allow a buyout.
You think Noah and Sessions make them a playoff team?
Very questionable!
I put this on a different page first, but this is a playoff-making trade:
Shumpert -for- Sessions and Oquinn
Cleveland gets luxury tax reduction and depth at center.
New York gets an upgrade at PG and depth at SF. Also, Shumpert is an upgrade at being a role model for Nkitina– he’s been to the top and works hard for the team. Also, NY’s society folks will like it (celeb GFs). Also, If the team decides to go young at center (or if Noah gets injured), Shump’s toughness would help what would be a pretty soft frontcourt. Also, Melo might find Shump more stimulating and play harder.
And it might be the difference between playoffs or not!
Melo ain’t ballin for the knicks no more.
Well Imam can play Melo’s position too. Sessions and Oquinn, not so.
My guess is Melo will open up on choice of teams when it’s real close to the season. I think the Knicks are doing the right thing by not settling for garbage from Houston and putting pressure on Melo for the last minute choice to go to another team. That’s unless Melo wants to continue to lose and possibly be benched mid to late season when the Knicks are basically completely out of it.
Melo ain’t agreeing to go where he doesn’t want to be. Remember he said he was waiting for the knicks to do what they said they would do. Send him to Houston. If they can’t get back to a trade agreement, they’ll eventually buy him out.
First of all Melo said he would waive his ntc for Houston while actually never asking to be traded. It’s the Knicks front office that wants to trade Melo. They want to hit full rebuild mode and can’t do that with Melo on the team.
China
The Knicks are not going to trade Melody and get back nothing of value. Melo will start and end this season in New York and they will make the playoffs. Melo working out, running around at 2am, cause if you haven’t read last year’s article on what Melo said about Coach Jeff Hornacek fast-moving offense then you would know why he’s getting into shape early this season cause they are going to be a running team work all that youth.
He counts against next years cap also so if he doesn’t agree to open his trade destinations they will pick up his option. So the can and will use that as leverage.
Knicks are only going to discuss a buyout with Melo if he walks away from next year’s option, and then only if he discounts this year’s salary (now) or the buyout is done near the deadline. Melo brought up the buyout, not the Knicks, but wants it for 2 years with essentially no money given up. Nobody’s ever gotten something like that, and nobody ever will. If he turns out to be the same old cancer in the locker room, send him home (leave him on the roster). It’s totally legitimate and been done before. Team’s only obligation is to pay him.
This saga is not about where Carmen…not a typo…wants to go. There is no market for a guy that is never in shape, doesn’t play defense, is a ball hog, bad in the locker room with young guys, and is paid stupid $. I would love to know whether Dolan or Jax pushed for that contract….my opinion is Dolan…one more stupid decision by that moron!
who cares???…the Knicks arent going to win anything with him…might as well tank!!!
He might go to the Celtics
