New Kings big man Zach Randolph was arrested on Wednesday night in Los Angeles on a felony charge of marijuana possession with intent to sell, according to an ESPN.com report. TMZ was the first outlet to report Randolph’s arrest.
Los Angeles Police Department officials told ABC-7 that officers patrolling the Nickerson Gardens area in L.A. encountered a group of individuals “blocking the street, drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and playing loud music.” When those officers tried to break up the crowd, the disturbance “escalated,” resulting in damage to five LAPD vehicles and a sheriff’s vehicle.
The police report from the LAPD indicates that Randolph was arrested at 11:00pm pacific time and booked several hours later, early on Thursday morning. Bail for Randolph was set at $20K, while his “intent to sell” charge stemmed from the large amount of marijuana found, per TMZ.
It remains to be seen whether Randolph will be prosecuted on the marijuana charge or whether he’ll face a suspension from the NBA, but it’s an ominous beginning to his time in Sacramento. The longtime Grizzlies power forward inked a two-year, $24MM contract with the Kings last month as an unrestricted free agent.
Randolph, 36, moved from the starting lineup to the bench in Memphis last season, but was still very productive, averaging 14.1 PPG and 8.2 RPG in just 24.5 minutes per game.
Intent to sell? Where is the common sense. A guy worth millions is out there trying to make a few bucks selling dime bags? How do they figure intent to sell?
Purely based on the amount he was in possession of. I believe anything over an ounce carries that charge.
That sucks considering everyone and their mother are sure that he wasn’t selling anything.
Feel like he just prob had over the amount that is considered “personal usage” so thats why he got the charge. Dude prob just had a lot of weed for him and his homies to smoke on
Why is “felony marijuana” even still a phrase in 2017? Jesus this country is so archaic at times. I hope the prosecutor punishes him for this terrible act while smoking a cancer stick and recovering from his moonshine-induced hangover.
The guy has made $175 million dollars and chooses to act like this in public at 36 years old. If you don’t like “felony marijuana” how about “felony stupidity”, “Misdemeanor Immaturity”, and “2nd degree arrogance”
Perfect!
While I agree, None of those are crimes.
Well obviously.
He is describing the stupidity.
They should be!
Doesn’t matter if you disagree with the laws, you still follow them until you can get them changed. This is pure stupidity on Randolph’s part. Poor Kings can never move ahead without something like this, he should have to return any earned income to the Kings for this selfishness.
Intent will be drop. It’s cali it never sticks unless they got real proof
damn straight Nia
Isn’t marijuana legal in California though?
But it doesn’t become recreationally until 1/1/18
It is currently legal to own less than ounce in CA for recreational use. On 1/1/18 the state will begin issuing permits for businesses to legally sell marijuana for recreational use.
Agreed Brown Trout.
My apologies in advance for this posting twice. Not sure why it does it ( happens every time I post) and don’t know how to fix it
CULTURE!!! It’s all about the CULTURE in Sacramento
The intent to sell charge wont stick. It will most likely be reduced to criminal possession of marijuana depending on California’s marijuana laws. Knowing the NBA they’ll probably make an example of Randolph. It is a shame that in a state where recreation usage of marijuana is legal, during the NBA offseason, that Randolph will be penalized by the NBA.
