Derrick Rose, sidelined since November 7 with an ankle injury, isn’t currently with the Cavaliers and is evaluating his future in basketball, according to Adrian Wojnarowski and Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
Rose, who has been away from the Cavs for the better part of a week, has been plagued by health problems since winning the NBA’s MVP award in 2011, averaging just 38 games played over the last six seasons, not including this year. Those ongoing injury issues have the veteran point guard feeling overwhelmed, per Wojnarowski and McMenamin.
“He’s tired of being hurt and it’s taking a toll on him mentally,” one Cavaliers source told ESPN.
Rose, 29, signed a one-year, minimum salary contract with the Cavaliers over the summer, and was thrust into the team’s starting lineup when Kyrie Irving was traded to the Celtics, with Isaiah Thomas still recovering from his hip injury. However, Rose has been limited to just seven games so far, averaging 14.3 PPG and a career-worst 1.7 APG in those contests.
As a member of the Knicks last season, Rose unexpectedly left the team at one point to return to Chicago and missed a game, failing to explain his absence until after the fact. He was fined for that departure and apologized to his teammates when he returned. However, this isn’t a repeat of that situation — a Cavs spokesman tells ESPN that Rose’s current absence is excused.
You can’t help but feel bad for D Rose. Injuries have killed him throughout his career and if it weren’t for the injuries he’d probably be amongst the top PGs in the league.
I can help it. He has proven to be nothing more than a soft quitter. I lost all of my respect for him when he refused to play after being cleared by the Bulls. He is the perfect example for the elimination of guaranteed salaries in the NBA.
he did refuse to play after being cleared, i remember being mad at that as well because i thought we couldve went to the chip that year. but w. hindsight being 20/20 and seeing all the injuries since then, how could u be mad at that anymore?
If his body didn’t feel right then it didn’t feel right. I love drose and always will. However lately he’s made a lot of questionable decisions. And I feel this is one of them. He’s getting paid for a service and is choosing not to do them by stepping a way. If he wants to reevaluate things I get that and I believe he should but he should’ve done it before this year or after the season
Have to agree with jkbuckets, but the sprained ankle didn’t happen before this year or after the season.
I’m not mad, I just lost respect for him.
You don’t get a pass for being lucky/unlucky or even for being right. That would be like robbing a house and then getting let off because the house ended up getting robbed the next day and they would’ve lost their stuff anyway. If a doctor clears you, you play or you should have to forfeit your salary.
He has been a island from day one. His attitude and brother has cost him a lot. Never been liked by teammates and his me first attitude has caught up to him. Goodbye and good riddance
Doesn’t this happen every year?
I feel for the guy. You negative Nancys can grumble all the time. The fact remains when healthy, he’s one of the top PGs in the league. Period.
Best wishes to the man and if it’s time to retire, then let it be.
they should try to get delly back
At least he’s better than Lonzo, there’s that.
…That time of the year already?
Aw man we know how you keyboard warriors have it rougher with your carpal tunnel and lack of mountain dew withdrawal
Injuries have been career killers (concussions in the NFL). Derrick’s body is already shot for the rest of his life. He would have been Hall of Fame if not for injuries!
Great way to get yourself bought out. Sign a contract play till your bored and get bought out.
bought out? It’s the league mini. Dan Gilbert throws out more caviar every day than what Rose’s contract is worth.
No joke! The guy founded the states top mortgage company and owns a Casino. His money renovated downtown Detroit. He gave Michigan State basketball (He likes Tom Izzo) $6 million for recruiting.
I’ll always respect Rose for not giving up after multiple ACL injuries. If he retires, he’s not getting anything from the Cavs or Adidas. Buy out a 1 year $1.5 million contract. Hehehehe! That makes his decision easier!
He signed a 1 year contract for the minimum. He’s considering retirement because all his injuries are affecting him mentally. I can believe that!
Don’t blame Derrick for trying to continue playing. That would be because of LeBron James recruiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Rose retires, he’ll forfeit $60 million from Adidas!
We all have something… It’s too bad that with Rose injuries were always something persistent…
