In a pair of tweets this afternoon, Cavaliers guard Isaiah Thomas lashed out at reporters who continue to bring up his trade from the Celtics.
“Don’t get mad at me like im sitting here wanting to still talk about the trade,” he posted. “Get mad at the person interviewing me lol. Get mad at the questions not the REAL answers! These post were for the people who think I’m salty about the trade… Good morning to y’all too lol.”
The tweets come a day after ESPN aired an in-depth interview with Thomas in which he says he regrets playing for the Celtics in the playoffs on an injured hip. He aggravated the condition, forcing him out of the Eastern Conference finals and setting up a long rehab process that still isn’t fully complete.
“No matter what, I’ve always played through injuries,” Thomas said. “If I went back and could do it again, I would have sat out the playoffs because I would have been playing right now and I would have been 100% hopefully.”
Thomas adds that he wasn’t aware of the severity of the injury when he made the decision to continue playing.
“I do wish I had more information,” he said. “It was never, ‘This can be something that could possibly shut you down for a while.’ Because if that was the case, I definitely wouldn’t have played.”
Thomas, who may be medically cleared to return to action this week, also tweeted today that he doesn’t have any bitterness toward the Celtics for the way things turned out.
“I will always love Boston,” he wrote. “That city and organization gave me a opportunity to be a superstar and I took it.”
OK, I take back my comments about IT being brave during the playoffs. It looks like he was not brave, just misinformed.
It’s okay you were just misinformed. Now uou really just a petty little nancy
Exactly. He clearly said he would not have played if he knew it could result in him missing time. Back then I thought he was knowingly risking his health for the city of Boston and I called him brave. I think a lot of folks fell for that, not just me and nancy.
He risked his health and they repaid him by trading him. Great work Boston
condescending 20 yr old who has it all figured out?
You have it backwards. Boston gave him an opportunity to become all he can be – and he repaid Boston by taking advantage of that opportunity, which helped them earn the #1 seed. There is no need for additional repayment from Boston.
Agreed. And there is no need for him to risk his career for them.
Whuuut. Boston did nothing special by playing a player who can score. And repayment? From whom to whom?
Boston used him up as much as they could, knowing they would not meet his future salary demands. I would like to know how much they told him about his hips. I think everyone could see– and still worry that– he was not holding up and relying on adrenaline to compensate.
What we will be seeing from now on is Boston fans turning their love of IT to a battle-worthy antipathy.
Meanwhile Cleveland fans regarding KI will turn their respectful meh to a deeper “yeah but” meh. The passion was never there, in either direction. I hope there’s no parallels to Belichick!
Please be advised that IT sought and obtained a second medical opinion on his hip from an independent doctor. Any belief that the Celtics knew that his playing would “use him up” and that they kept this knowledge from him is nonsense. IT knew more about the injury than the Celtics did AND had the final decision on whether to play.
What appears to have happened here, which happens all the time in regular jobs is that the employee felt they could go “above and beyond” and FORCE the employer to pay them back later. Doesn’t work like that. If you’ve had a few jobs you’d know this – but folks early in their careers seldom realize. Learn this life lesson, IT, like everyone else.
If you want to be rewarded for what you are about to do, negotiate up front. All of this comes off as hindsight and whining. Rewind to the NBA draft and recall IT signing his first contract. In return for a chance to play in the NBA and a bigger paycheck than most of us will ever see, he agreed to give his best in each and every game. He was not required or even requested to play when medically unable or dangerous or following the death of his sister. He chose tho do those things because HE wanted to and now he’s bitter because HE made a mistake despite the FACT that he was the most informed party on his health. He had the Celtics medical report, a second opinion and his own knowledge of his body. Stop blaming the Celtics. And remember, IT, despite a valiant effort, you failed. Didn’t even come close to making the Finals. The way you act you’d think you won the world championship.
I loved IT when he played for the Celtics. He far outplayed anyone’s expectations. He was a warrior, ant the epitome of mental toughness but IT it’s time to move on. You’re starting to become bitter and it’s impacting your legacy back here in New England. Prove to the Celtics they were wrong by what you do on the court not what you say off the court
100% agree. He’s better than this.
i mean… if he keeps getting asked about it… i could understand if he just brought it up out of the blue. same thing w. KD. the reporters ask, the players answer.
Then he should decline to comment
Ummmm. He did. He keeps telling them to stop
This sounds like spilled milk. I appreciate what I.T. Did for us, but when he started running his mouth off about breaking the bank (Celtics payroll), after A very good season I would Have been looking to trade him also. He would not lead us anywhere near the top, because of hip and age, and lack of defense. Good clubs knew how to contain him, maybe with lb and love he might be able to help them.
He led “you” to the #1 Seed. And you have no idea where he could have led “you” because he was hurt.
I agree, IT out preformed what anyone expected and led us far. He helped speed up the process, however due to size, age, and injury, no way should he have gotten a max deal. Once he started running his mouth about backing up the Brinks truck, I’m glad they moved on. It seemed immature to say. Look at other Boston sports stars and tell me who else would say something like that
Seeing as though Kyrie is already getting Max, the only way Boston keeps him next year is to break the freaking bank. Kyrie is the biggest star since Bird. And Bird would’ve broke the bank as well.
Is he not bringing up the trade in the tweets? Just decline to comment Isaiah, sheesh
Kyrie is better than IT, however we’re about to see what happens when one player that is driven to excellence due to a perceived screw job by Danny boy. He may end up being just what the cavs need while Celtics continue to wallow in the more of a recent 5-6 record.
