The Cavaliers entertained the thought of trading center Channing Frye in a package for George Hill last month. Now that full-time starter Kevin Love is out long-term, however, the club would be wise to hold off, Bryan Kalbrosky of Hoops Hype writes.
Frye didn’t waste time stepping in to fill the void for the Cavaliers. In his first taste of action sans Love, the veteran posted 20 points and added six rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.
The 34-year-old brings more than just leadership to the Cavaliers locker room, his ability to knock down threes and generally play both inside and out will make him extra valuable until Love returns.
“Well, we know what Channing brings to the game,” Cavaliers teammate LeBron James told Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. “He adds spacing with his ability to shoot the ball for one, and he attracts the defense. But his ability to finish in the paint as well helps us out.”
There’s more from the Central Division:
- No charges will be filed against Bucks rookie Sterling Brown, Ashley Luthern of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes. Per Luthern, Brown had been arrested on a tentative misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing an officer. Brown has averaged 3.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 35 games for the Bucks this season.
- The first-round pick headed to Chicago in the Nikola Mirotic trade is top-5 protected in 2018, top-8 protected in 2019, top-10 protected in 2020, and top-9 protected in 2021, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. If the Bulls, somehow, still haven’t received the pick by 2021, it will turn into second-rounders in both 2022 and 2023.
- He’s been back for 12 games, but Cavaliers guard Isaiah Thomas still isn’t 100%. “I’m not confident out there as I usually am,” he told Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. “It’s a process getting confidence back mentally and physically in your body and doing the things you used to be able to do. And my body’s not allowing me to do that yet.”
So the Bulls get the Pelicans’ 1st round pick this summer if it’s out the top five, correct?
Correct. Currently stands at pick 17
Thanks, man!
hoping they miss the playoffs at like the 9 seed
Anyone just as shocked as I am the cavs have made NO moves yet as other teams make moves?
I think this pretty much clears the air about why Griffin and Gilbert parted ways. Depending on whose camp you believe, who parted first.
Gilbert is looking to go younger. Do not trade those first rounders unless you fill an overwhelming trade has been made seems to be what’s going on.
Can’t say I blame him. It’s his team. And James will command and get a Kings ransom. I hope the cavs aren’t that team unless it’s for say two years or less. Paying James a long term contract would hurt this organization for at least another decade.
*now watch as I write this post a trade happens. Mwahahahahahaha!
This is the absolute dumbest cesp I’ve ever seen on here. And, that’s saying something. Signing LeBron to a long-term contract would be the best thing Cleveland could hope for. Regardless of what the rest of the team looks like. You are guaranteed to contend for a title if he’s on your team. Wow
Well Kenly, I bet you change your handle by the time LeBron gets three years out from now as he’ll be as every other great that’s played the game. Washed up and sad to watch while strangling the team that holds that long term contract. I guess you didn’t see Kobe and what he did to the Lakers
If we are talking 4 years ago I’d say yes. Sign James to a 5 year. Not now. His pet is the lowest it’s ever been thin past January. His numbers are falling like a last year Kobe brick.
I absolutely love what James has done for the cavaliers and am grateful for what he means in term of outstanding being a good citizen. But all greats eventually bow out due to what age does to a body. If they didn’t, we’d still be watching Bill Russell win ships.
Agreed. I honestly think people don’t have a firm grasp on Father Time, and how much he changes things, people, and situations.
People are still talking about Lebron as if it’s 2010 or 2011. Guys, he’s almost 34 years old. Most NBA players careers are over at 36 or 37. This means that Lebron is in the twilight of his career.
You’re about to see a sharp decline in his production, and this will continue until the end of his career.
Agree about lack of trades, and I am impatient. But if they had successfully traded Frye earlier, he would be gone before Lue understands why he should get PT– even vs GSW. That was Lue’s choice not to play him– it doesn’t make sense.
Signing James to 5 years is fine. He will still have trade value throughout. If they’re not winning he would waive an NTC to stop losing. However all that has happened is winning with him, generally losing without. There is nothing about a Gilbert/Altman GM duo that would suggest that could change… The changes made this year were not LJ’s choices.
Cavs can’t sign LeBron to a 5 year contract since he’ll be 37 the 5th year, and the NBA won’t permit it. He could have signed a 5 year contract last year, but didn’t. If the Cavs don’t make the Finals, I don’t see him staying. this is why he’s signing 1 year at a time (to see if he wants to stay here!).
The changes made this year were LeBron’s choices. He played last summer in Vegas with Eric Bledsoe and Derrick Rose. Anyone who doesn’t believe LeBron had something to do with Dwayne Wade doesn’t know anything about basketball. LeBron openly recruited Jeff Green in the public (no references necessary, Lebron attached his name to the articles. If you want to see them, you find them.)
1) James CAN sign for 5 years. He and Chris Paul lobbied to extend the limit years ago, then timed 2018 for deciding on it. Look it up. The 5 year contract has been a frequent topic on the PlainDealer online which you’re always mentioning.
2) And did the Cavs ever get Eric Bledsoe? NO. Think. They had 2 chances and no. You think James picked out Jose Calderon? No. Have you ever heard of any relationship with James? No, nor Korver, nor Cedi Osman. Did he want the GM fired? No. Did he want the current GM hired? No, and there is no communication with him now. Did he pick the Boston offer led by a high draft pick? That was what Gilbert wanted; James does not value high picks or rookies. He wanted BLEDSOE and was never thrilled about IT. Do you think IT would be a James preference? Rose and Wade are playing for dirt cheap; it did not take James’ advocacy for them to be snapped up.
Gilbert has been spiting/ignoring James all year long while favoring IT. He got tired of James’ power plays. Things changed for 17/18.
You don’t have the knowledge you claim and mislead people, like misinterpreting the Love tweet by still believing the allstar game was east vs west. You previously showed broad interest in many sports. Now you’re just malicious, and only about the Cavs. Why? Did me calling you out what I know more about get you all small-world? Well get bigger and quit with the yappy-dog posting.
Ask Luke Adams the sight coordinator. Your references have given you bad information. There is a 37 year old age limit. The NBA turned down the same thing LeBron would be going though when they did it with Nene and Houston last season. If you turn 37 the 5th year of the contract, you are not eligible. You look it up. Sorry you don’t know everything.
Again you can’t read. James played with Bledsoe and Rose last summer in Vegas. It was all over the news. Obviously you don’t read this sight. Within the last 2 weeks an article was written about James being upset about Gilbert not getting Paul George (would have had to give up Kevin Love) or Bledsoe. Track back and read it then you can criticize this sites reporter. WADE WOULD NOT HAVE COME TO CLEVELAND IF LEBRON WASN”T HERE. HE DID HIM A FAVOR AND WANTS TO RETIRE IN CLEVELAND. You are dead wrong on Rose, Wade, and Jeff Green. Again sorry you don’t know everything.
You are right, LeBron, Altman, and Gilbert aren’t talking now. LeBron works for Gilbert, not vice versa.
Again can you read. I’ve given tips to the writer. I’ve written many posts on the Pacers. If I’ve seen trades on Fansided, Sports Illustrated, HoopsHype, Indianapolis Star, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, NBA.com, CBS, ESPN, so on.
For the Cavs you really do only tell things from your perspective. You are very much narrow minded. I tell what I read and have to let them know about “your mistakes.”
This sites coordinator is intelligent, ask him about the 37 year old age limit and we’ll see who’s right. For LeBron, i know the truth, you just can’t accept it. For Love, he will be leaving after next season, and you again know I’m right on that one. You stop posting, people are tired of you calling them liars. Your user name is x%sure. That tells everyone you are doing your “You made it up, references, and criticizing” on purpose to make them mad. The stuff I found was easy. You are smarter than I am. Why can’t you find it!
Make it Wade wants to retire in Miami.
I’ve reported what these sites have said. I’ve Googled LeBron slowing down the Cavs. This is very simple. Either you don’t want to hear it or you’re not smart enough to think of it. I know you hate writer and F/O. Try doing their job for 1 week. You’d leave the first day.
Lol you’re searching for articles about LeBron slowing down the Cavs? Well maybe that’s why you keep finding articles about LeBron slowing down the Cavs? And you only repost things that you find that you agree with on those websites you listed, so aren’t you also only arguing Cavs things from your perspective only? I mean I get you follow “reputable” websites, but don’t you see that if you’re taking all the information they give you with not even a grain of salt, that you are basically just a news feed in the comments? Like the writers link articles and you go and find your own ones on your preferred website that match your views. Come on man, argue your own opinions and stop defending everyone else’s like a writer has never made up a story or lied about their sources.
You always reference sources and quotes instead of giving thought and analyzing the situation with your own perspective. The justification you give for your points is always “these well respected journalists said this” which is ridiculous. Like this isn’t a term paper for you to attach a works cited to every comment, get your own opinion once in a while.
I’m writing what the writer’s write, whether it’s my opinion or not. You are a big Cavs fan. I think LeBron and Love will leave and the Cavs will stink again like they did when he left before. We’ll never agree.
I have to keep reposting because x%sure keeps telling people he doesn’t remember that. I think he may need to see a doctor.
For what we read this site is called NBA Hoops “RUMORS.” It doesn’t mean everything everybody says will come true.
The reason I’ve said about LeBron slowing things down is because he looked it up (a Cleveland.com article) so I’ve had to say several times where I got it. Even recently I posted it and he responded I made it up, he looked at it wasn’t there. He obviously didn’t Google LeBron slowing down the Cavs or he would have seen it. He just didn’t want to.
I do argue my own opinions. I said I strongly disagree with the George Hill trade. I said I saw him in Indiana and he’s not worth $20 million. I was right. Gilbert asked him for a buyout after this year. x%sure and I strongly disagree with each other over LeBron and Love staying and LeBron’s recruiting, even when he says in public he’s doing it.
I’m literally not a Cavs fan at all and I think they’re one of the worst teams in the league to watch on league pass lol I’m 100% a Blazers fan. I just have respect for LeBron and his 3 championships and HOF career and don’t blame LeBron for winning the Cavs a championship. They can have no cap space or good young players for the next 10 years and it still will have been worth it to have won 1. Nobody is arguing with your idea that LeBron and Love will leave, obviously there are chemistry issues and Love can play his real game elsewhere. I’m arguing with the fact that somehow LeBron is to blame for everything in Cleveland when he’s absolutely not. The Kyrie trade destroyed them, and nobody is talking about that? It’s all LeBron’s fault Isiah Thomas can’t shoot and Jae Crowder plays like trash right? His fault Wade and Jeff Green are washed up? His fault D Rose has torn his ACLs and meniscus’s so many times? What IS his fault is the Cavs getting so many first round picks when he left that they traded two of them (Bennett and Wiggins) into Kevin Love when LeBron came back, winning both Kevin Love his only championship and winning one for the organization whose owner not only tried to burn the bridge with LeBron but full on demolition it. Came back to win one for his city, not the organization, not the owner, not for anybody but the people of Cleveland. BTW George Hill signed outright with the Kings, he didn’t get traded. Did you see George Hill in Utah? That’s why he got paid, that team with him, Heyward, and Gobert was GOOD. He got overpaid but that was the Kings fault. They gave Zach Randolph 2/$24 million, nobody is out here calling the Kings smart. What are you even arguing man you just dislike LeBron asking for a roster upgrade and are mad at the Kings for overpaying George Hill?
You are correct. I don’t watch all-star games. Goodell wants to cancel the Pro Bowl. The MLB all-star game is boring. Commissioner Silver changed the NBA format because it’s boring because of no defense.
For the Love tweet. I did see “especially if Love leaves.” Just not on Joe Vardon’s article. I could tell you 10 places where I saw it. you’ll never admit I’m right. I said the Cavs acquiring Hill would be a mistake with his $20 million contract. As it turns out Gilbert asked Hill to take a buyout. For love leaving, I’ve said when he can opt out after next season, if he isn’t traded first. You know I’m right, you just can’t admit it.
I looked it up. I was wrong. It is you can’t be 38 in 5th year of contract. LeBron will be 38 in 5th year of contract, so he couldn’t do it. Like most, I don’t expect LeBron to ever sign more than a 1 year contract again. I do think he’ll leave if they don’t make Finals. For the rule I looked up Nene contract declined due to age. There were several articles. I read http://www.SBNation.com July 2017. Don’t give many any stuff. If you do, I’ll know you didn’t read it.
The Over-38 rule is a confusing one since it uses October 1 as a cutoff point. For example, when 34-year-old Nene tried to sign a four-year deal this past offseason, it didn’t work, because his birthday is in September, so he’d turn 38 just before October 1 in his fourth season.
In LeBron’s case, he actually COULD sign a five-year contract this summer because on October 1 during the fifth year of that contract, he’d still be 37 (turning 38 the following January).
(To confuse matters even further, the Over-38 rule actually doesn’t technically PREVENT players from signing deals that extend through their 38th birthday — it just means they have to be structured differently, and that structure usually violates other various cap rules, which is what prevents them from being signed).
I’m sorry LeBron did ask Dave Griffin to acquire Kyle Korver from Atlanta because of his 3 point shooting. The Cavs are in a mess because of TT and J.R.’s contracts. Both held out to get over $16 million. For recently, these guys LeBron recruited are old and it’s showing on their defense. I know, I don’t know what i’m talking about. That’s your opinion. Talk to Dan Gilbert about it. For IT, let’s see what kind of contract Gilbert offers him this summer.
Why don’t you just go on and on with things I HAVE NOT SAID. You make things up and misrepresent me. Liar. “Talk to Fan Gilbert about it”, right. Thats how your mind goes. You think you speak for him I guess. Now post 5 more times.
Cavs are in a very rough spot because of the LeBron. They don’t know if he’s staying or not. If he leaves, they will desperately need the Brooklyn pick, their only real trade asset. If they knew he was staying, they probably would have already used that chip for a big trade. If he leaves, which I really think he will, they’ll have a terrible roster with their own LATE 1st round pick. BUT, if they don’t improve the roster before the deadline, the Cavs won’t even make it out of the East and Bron will leave for sure.
Agree with this 100%.
But the Brooklyn pick is just one more year rebuilding. If he leaves then the team will get one get way higher picks the following years.
The Bulls-Pels trade protections… I think these GMs are sitting around, plotting to appear hard-working to the fanbase by making them look more complicated than they need to be. Protected top 5, then top 8, top 10, top 9… how can this be necessary? Boy they must be pounding it out in the conference room ha!
Cleveland has paid more in luxury tax than anyone in the NBA since LeBron came back. Owners don’t want to pay luxury tax unless they are guaranteed to make it deep into the playoffs. They had a losing record the second half of last season and have had 2 losing streaks this season. Now Love is out. I think Gilbert knows Love will leave after next season. If LeBron leaves this year, the Cavs will be back to where they were post LeBron last time (Gilbert wants the high picks like he did getting Kyrie, plus they are cheaper than vets. It’ll get him out of the luxury tax.)
If the Cavs don’t improve this year, IT will have trouble getting a contract. LeBron wants Finals. If the Cavs don’t get it here, he’ll go somewhere else!
Wade wants to finish his career in Miami. He won’t be back. Shumpert, Calderon, and Rose won’t be back. Frye, Osman, and Zizic might not be back. It all depends on LeBron and IT. If they leave I can see Gilbert trying to trade Love, Tristan, and J.R. due to their salaries and Love can opt out after next year. If the Cavs don’t make it to the finals, they could have a train wreck, and at this point I think that’s what Gilbert is hoping for.
Korver and Crowder are only players guaranteed to be back since they only make $7 million and have good contracts. (some question Korvers).
If you ever want to see what a general manager does, watch Bill Polian on NFL Live on ESPN. He’s one of the most intelligent people I’ve seen.
I’ll always call Indiana my real home, I’ll be burried there. the reason I’m so negative about the Cavs is the Pacers have a record of 29-24 with a salary of $93,228,638. The Cavs have a record of 30-20 and a salary of $137,232,832. The Pacers owner doesn’t have the money Gilbert has. Everyone is proud of the Pacers. Even though the Colts had a bad year without Luck, they’ll be back. I left because they closed my plant or I’d still be there. I’ll take the little guy every time.
Hard to make a major trade with so many moving pieces: Playing poorly; LeBron’s status; Owner maybe looking to sell; Love out for 2 months; luxury tax restrictions; and, mostly, the IT mess.
The IT trade is one of the worst trades in recent years, giving up a top 10 player for pieces. Their season (maybe LeBron’s last with them) is now tied to an injured player who is more concerned with his situation beyond this year. Another of those KI trade pieces (the vaunted Brooklyn 1st rounder) isn’t the asset they thought it would be.
I think they’ll try to make a trade, but it’s hard to know what the purpose will be. Improve now? Set up a post-LeBron rebuild? Reduce luxury taxes?
Trade IT, THE END!
