J.J. Redick signed perhaps the most notable one-year contract of 2017’s free agent period, inking a $23MM pact with the Sixers that allowed the team to preserve cap room for 2018. While Redick’s expiring contract gives the 76ers some flexibility to pursue a high-profile free agent this summer, the veteran sharpshooter isn’t necessarily looking to be one-and-done in Philadelphia, as Keith Pompey of Philly.com writes.
“This is something that I’ll reiterate that I said last summer when I signed here,” Redick said on Sunday. “I want this to be a long-term thing. … I love playing here. I love playing with these guys. I love playing for Brett [Brown]. This has been a fantastic experience.”
At age 33, Redick is enjoying one of the best years of his career, posting a career-best 16.7 PPG with a .445/.405/.931 shooting line. However, his future in Philadelphia may hinge on whether the Sixers need to use their projected cap room on another free agent, renouncing Redick’s massive $27MM+ cap hold. In that scenario, the team would only be able to offer Redick the remaining portion of their cap space, or their modest room exception.
Here’s more out of Philadelphia:
- In an interesting piece for The Athletic, Danny Leroux examines the divergent career paths of K.J. McDaniels and Jerami Grant, two players who were offered “[Sam] Hinkie Specials” after being drafted in 2014. As Leroux details, those Hinkie Specials – long-term minimum salary contracts for young players – are still paying dividends for the franchise, since Richaun Holmes and T.J. McConnell are among the current Sixers who received them.
- Following last week’s game against the Cavaliers, Joel Embiid may have engaged in some subtle recruiting of free-agent-to-be LeBron James on Instagram, though he was quick to deny it. Dan Devine of Yahoo Sports recaps the social media fun.
- On Friday, our Chris Crouse passed along some of the highlights from a Sloan Conference panel on “The Process.”
JJ fills his role nicely for three quarters. I guarantee his 4th quarter numbers are worse across the board. Especially turnover percentage. Non-clutch.
Wish list:
1. Paul George
2. Evan Fournier
3. Mario Hezonja (for less than $10M)
4. JJ Redick (for less than $7M)
5. KCP
6. Wilson Chandler
7. Patrick McCaw
Estimates for Hezonja are just about that, like 2yrs/$19mil. You’re prob low for JJR
PG13 Yes, Fournier if you miss on LBJ, PG13, Kawhi, Jabari Parker, and Aaron Gordon.
JJ Yes – has to be something like 5-6M tho.
Kawhi won’t be eligible until next year.
Robert Covington also signed a Hinkie Special. Covington > Redick.
I love what cov brings in the defensive end but the dude is so streaky on offense. He will either go 8 for 8 from 3 or 0 for 8 and nothing in between. Also he gets a little turnover prone at times especially when he drives. Don’t get me wrong I still like what he does he just needs to work on some ball handling and passing so that when he does drive it doesn’t end in the other team having the ball and he has another dimension when his shots aren’t falling.
Suits the team.
Simmons, Imbiid and JJ all average quite high turnovers.
Hopefully it’s something they work on over the Summer
Redick would look good on the Pistons.
1st offseason move they need to make is get rid of Bayless and Anderson = 11M and take back nothing. Thunder 2020 1st, 4 second round picks. Use them.
If they can retain Ersan, Marco, and JJ for 12M or less, that’s the ideal situation. Still would give them enough $ to go after LBJ.
I think it’s crucial the 76ers have an elite shooter with Ben Simmons’s game currently is restricted to the paint. Fournier would also be a good choice
If you like Fournier, Tyreke Evans would be a projected, lower cost option, who gives you more.
Back-up plan to LBJ. You start with PG13 or a trade for Kawhi. Then you’re looking at ‘stretch-4’ RFAs Aaron Gordon or Jabari Parker – such an injury risk tho.
I would rather draft a 2 guard than overpay Evans, LaVine, Hood, Barton, Bradley, KCP and Hezonja. All are way too inconsistent to dump dollars into them.
The only players I’d honestly target in a trade – the all-in scenario are Kawhi, Lillard, maybe McCollum – but I think they could be get-able. Players like Klay, Beal, etc.. don’t think you can even get a convo going.
Klay would listen for sure. He would get his shots a lot more, and be back to being the deadliest sharpshooter in the league, where he belongs
Klay isn’t the one listening. It’s GSW GM Bob Myers who is the one doing the listening. Klay isn’t a FA until 2019. I said in a trade.
Klay and Durant both said they want to be lifers with GSW. Thompson has said he wants to play his career with Curry. The Pacers offered George for Thompson, and the Cavs offered Kyrie. GSW said no. That sounds like GSW wants to keep him.
San Antonio is saying now that Kawhi isn’t going anywhere. Same for Lilliard and McCollum.
