While the Heat will explore trade scenarios involving Hassan Whiteside this offseason, a source in touch with the club’s front office said the odds of a deal are “considered 50-50 at best,” and are perhaps lower than that, writes Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. As such, Miami is preparing for the possibility of bringing back Whiteside next season.
According to Jackson, the Heat are committed to ensuring that Whiteside and head coach Erik Spoelstra are on the same page in the vent that no trade can be made. That process has already gotten underway, Jackson says, though he acknowledges that Whiteside, Spolestra, and team president Pat Riley haven’t met for a “collective summit” yet.
For his part, Whiteside hasn’t requested a trade and is open to making things work in Miami, one NBA friend of Whiteside tells Jackson. Per the Herald’s report, the veteran center does want a larger role, but any disagreement with Spoelstra is professional rather than personal.
Here’s more on the Heat from Jackson:
- Jackson offers up one hypothetical trade scenario involving Whiteside and the Bucks, suggesting that the inclusion of John Henson and Matthew Dellavedova could make it work. However, he cautions that there are no indications the two teams have discussed such a deal or that they’d both be interested — the Heat don’t want to move Whiteside simply for bad contracts.
- While no one on the Heat’s roster is untouchable, the team has “no appetite” to move Goran Dragic, says Jackson. Miami would also like to hang onto Justise Winslow, but recognizes that he may need to be included in a potential package for a high-end player.
- Which “high-end” player might the Heat make a run at this summer? Jackson names Kawhi Leonard, DeMarcus Cousins, and even DeMar DeRozan as possibilities.
- Briefly circling back to the 2017 free agent period, Jackson writes that the Heat committed four years and $60MM to James Johnson due to concerns that the Nuggets or Jazz would swoop in to sign him.
Henson/Delly and a 1st makes a lot of sense for Milwaukee
100%
Please not Derozan…
Whiteside for Zach Randolph, Garrett Temple, and #36 overall
Lol such a Kings move. Except it would be #2
What about if they sent Bogdanovic, Temple, Shumpert and #36 to Toronto for DeRozan and then draft Porter or Doncic, or trade down for one of the Bridges. DeRozan plays the 3 in Sacramento
Wouldn’t happen in a million years unless they include number 2
For DeRozan?
Why on earth would Toronto make that trade? Temple and shumpert have negative value as ridiculously overpaid bench players
I’m not a fan of either team, but I feel like that’s a great trade for Toronto and makes them a lot better. Maybe you value DeRozan a lot higher than I do, and he should be, though. Shumpert is an expiring contract, as is Temple, and would be for salary matching purposes. Temple gives them depth on the wing, which they need, and both he and Bogdanovic give them the shooting help they need, while also allowing for more player movement off the ball, and ball movement in the offense, that isn’t there with Lowry and DeRozan taking so many ISO possessions
DeRozan isnt that good. Toronto would be better with a 3 and D wing in his place
watt in the hec would u do with z-bo
He plays some 5 in certain lineups against certain matchups, but you can limit his minutes way easier than you can with Whiteside, and he costs way less money
No this is a better trade idea.
Whiteside and Waiters with Miami Heat’s 2019 first round pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Parsons, Ben McLemore and Memphis’s 2018 First round pick.
Why it is good for Memphis:
Whiteside as Center and moving Gasol to PF. It would be a nice front court and give Whiteside a chance for redemption. Also a Waiters and Conley backcourt is pretty good. Also Memphis is shedding two bad contracts.
Why it is good for Heat:
Getting a top pick when the heat has no picks in this draft. and a couple of guys that Erik might be able to find a way to utilize.
As bad as Whiteside is, he isnt as bad as taking chandler Parsons, even for a top pick. And there is no way Memphis would take Whiteside and get rid of a top pick like that…
That being said, in that scenario, Heat would likely take Porter, Doncic, Bamba, Mikal Bridges, or trade down for a SGA, Lonnie Walker, or Kevin Knox
memphis is considering making a trade of the pick. ANd they need a player like Waiters. and whiteside is definitely an upgrade to their front court.
Taking on parsons is just biting the bullet of getting the 4th pick which could be Jaren jackson Jr or Luka. or mo bamba
I think that the Heat would take Parsons, even though it is a bad contract because they want that pick. They have no pick this year. Also Erik is an outstanding coach. There is always the chance that he can find a way to utilize Parsons. But unloading Whiteside allows Olynyk and bam adebayo have option to grow. The heat does not need Whiteside in their rotation. they do not need parsons either, but a draft pick is the consolation and ben mclemore is just someone getting a third chance.
Memphis would take whiteside because Waiters is valuable. he is only 26. also a future pick is good.
i do not think memphis will find a better deal if they are going to go through with trading the pick than this deal.
Memphis could just resign Tyreke Evans for probably less than Waiters contract, and Whiteside and Gasol makes no sense. There are infinitely better deals on the table for that pick..the heat would also not want to lose 2 rotation players in a deal like this. Whiteside for Parsons is bad enough, but adding Waiters, who they missed this year is too much, having to take back Parsons, even with a top pick attached
The Heat also dont care about not having a pick this year. That’s not Pat Riley’s style, and has been mentioned by him a few times
Yes, Parsons is one of the worst contracts up there with Noah, Deng, and Mozgov.
Don’t forget Conley on that list
Why? B/c he was injured this year? He justified that contract his 1st season after signing it. Healthy Conley lives up to his deal
Whiteside is a complimentary piece. Memphis needs a more of an impact player. That can be acquired via the #4 overall pick. I would even thing they could get a better current NBA player trading that pick than they would have from a Whiteside.
Waiters would be that piece. he has shown potential to be very good. he would be that piece. both are complimentary. but together it gives memphis a better team. and shred a bad contact.
Dion waiters is not that good at basketball
I would take the Milwaukee package for Whiteside in a heartbeat as long as they’re willing to include a couple second round picks
Waiters is definitely not that good, I do rate Whiteside much more, than him, also DeRozan is way better than waiters, I mean he is an all-star player, Waiters is hardly an starter in this league… SMH.
By the way the Milwaukee trade looks very good for the Bucks, but if Miami is willing to get rid of their best player for Henson & Dellavedova, maybe is time to starting changing the front office, right?
As a bucks fan, trading for Whiteside is intriguing but remind me what makes him so valuable. Was it one half season? It seems that players have one good half or even third of a season and ONE team and a bunch of TV personalities think they are the next superstar. In some ways reminds me of Bismack Biyombo.
The guy they need to get rid of is Tyler. He’s contract is outrageous and we got too many guards already.
