The Sixers have picked up their 2018/19 team option on big man Richaun Holmes, reports Michael Scotto of The Athletic (Twitter link). The option will pay Holmes a salary of $1,600,520 next season.
The move comes as no surprise for a couple reasons. For one, Holmes’ play has certainly justified a minimum-salary investment. In a part-time role in Philadelphia’s frontcourt, Holmes averaged 6.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 1.3 APG in 48 games (15.5 MPG) last season, and he was even more productive the year before, with 9.8 PPG and 5.5 RPG in 57 contests (20.9 MPG).
Additionally, exercising Holmes’ option for next season reportedly won’t actually lock in his $1.6MM salary. According to contract information from Basketball Insiders, Holmes’ salary remains non-guaranteed until January 10, even with his option picked up. T.J. McConnell‘s team option is said to have the same structure.
While exercising Holmes’ option may not provide any guarantees for the coming season, I’d be very surprised if he’s cut before his January guarantee date. Assuming he plays out the full 2018/19 season on his current deal, the 24-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
I hope they keep all 6 picks tbh. They need to draft Carter WVU or Carr PSU as a replacement for TJ (not paying him beyond rookie deal) and Azubuike KU or Wagner Mich to replace Holmes. All are 2nd rounders.
I’d go Nova Nova in the 1st. Mikal and Donte if I can.
Bayless + a future 2nd or Bayless + TLC or straight Cash, pay like 3 or so Mil of that contract mlb style. Bulls would take that. Kings would take that. Like I still dont get why, knowing you had to clear enough for Max you didnt include Bayless in the Noel or Okafor trades… like c’mon. This is why I thought Coleangelo was not a good GM. You take their assets you dump your trash.
How bout Jalen Brunson if he is there in the 2nd. He would be a perfect TJ replacement. Also another nova kid
Could also look at a guy like Grayson Allen late in the first
He could fall to the 2nd.
I love Brunsons style of play a killer mentality, but I think he goes right around mid 20s, and I like Donte more, he reminds me of Klay Thompson.
NBA limits hoe much cash teams can trade. Sixers are maxed out. Also in the Okafor Trade the Sixers dumped Stauskas to match up with Bookers salary.
So its 3.5M per season… July 1st = start of the 2018-19 season. Reset the clock.
And I know Nick was traded, except he can become a 2018-19, hes an rfa. So why they traded him vs Bayless is beyond me. The money would have worked. Nets had enough cap space available. Nick and Bayless would have contributed the same nothingness.
I like this Nova-Philly connection and so have a couple mocks. Would not hurt to trade up for Spellman either. Brunson would duplicate Oconnell, but since they only picked up his cheap option for one year of rights, maybe that would be wise… Simmons at PG is not optimal.
Good they picked the option on him, like him good energy, useful role player.
Sure, for just one more year probably. They could have offered a contract equal to his contribution, and keep him LT.
