11:29am: In addition to Young, Kevin Knox and Anfernee Simons will also work out for the Magic this week, tweets Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders.
9:54am: Oklahoma guard Trae Young has a private workout scheduled this week with the Magic, according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com. Zagora, who previously reported that Young will work out privately for the Knicks, writes that the nation’s leading scorer will fly to Orlando following his time in New York.
The Magic currently hold the No. 6 pick in the NBA draft, making Young a viable target for the club. Outside of perhaps power forward, Orlando isn’t loaded with talent at any position, so the team isn’t a lock to target a point guard, but that spot figures to be an area of focus this offseason. The Magic traded away former first-rounder Elfrid Payton at this year’s deadline, and currently have D.J. Augustin and Shelvin Mack atop their depth chart.
In his most recent mock draft, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony has Young going to the Magic at No. 6, writing that the youngster’s “offensive profile is tailor-made for today’s NBA.”
Young, a 6’2″ guard, led the NCAA with 27.4 PPG in 2017/18, en route to a first-team All-American season. He also ranked first in APG (8.7), and chipped in 3.9 RPG and 1.7 SPG.
Magic swingman Terrence Ross suggested in a comment on Instagram that he intends to be in attendance for Young’s workout with the team this week.
I like the fit for the Magic. Need a PG who can help space the floor. He’d be a good addition to the young core they are building with Fournier, Gordon, Ross, and Simmons
Isaiah Thomas would fit in perfectly with this team, the Magic should draft Bamba and skip on Trae Young. A front-court of Bamba,Gordon, and Isaac would be insane, Thomas rounds everything out with his veteran leadership and playmaking ability.
What’s the difference between Trae Young and Trey Burke? They said all the same things about Trey Burke coming out of college and he was drafted him number 9.
Unless they make a deal, and they should consider it, I’d expect them to pick Porter or Sexton, assuming Bamba isn’t on the board. If Bamba is available at #6, then they should take him or trade the pick to someone who will take him (plenty of suitors). Not to a team like Celtics for pieces and remote picks, but to one of the teams in the back part of the top 10 where they can still pick up a guy like Sexton or Young or the kid from Kentucky.
I do agree with Acarneglia, I like the fit of Young for the Magic… I really cannot see why so many fans don’t like him, but all the experts rave about him. I do think that as a prospect is arriving with far more potential than Curry had. I do know Curry is very good, mostly seems to be very popular, but what is playing is a lethal shooter, but I don’t think he is very good at anything else, not a great passer, defender…
I see Young getting selected at 6 by Orlando. Makes sense.
