Before DeMarcus Cousins agreed to join the defending-champion Warriors on a one-year, $5.3MM contract, the Trail Blazers and Pelicans discussed the possibility of a sign-and-trade deal that would have sent the star center to Portland, reports Chris Haynes of ESPN.com (Twitter link). However, according to Haynes, the fact that Cousins and Jusuf Nurkic share the same agent was one roadblock in those talks.
Even if not for that issue, it would have been tricky for the Pelicans and Blazers to reach a deal that worked for both sides. Acquiring a player via sign-and-trade would have hard-capped the Blazers, who were already well over the cap, so they likely would have had to send at least one or two players to New Orleans. It’s not clear if talks progressed to the point where the two sides were discussing specific players.
Here’s more on the free agency decision that has practically made LeBron James‘ move to Los Angeles an afterthought tonight:
- Cousins had narrowed down his choices to Golden State and Boston before opting for the Warriors, according to Haynes (Twitter link). The Celtics could have comfortably matched Golden State’s offer and would have been a fascinating destination for Cousins — with LeBron out of the East, the C’s already look like a favorite to represent the conference in the Finals in 2019, so the team’s status as the frontrunner would have been cemented with Cousins in the mix.
- Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports takes a look at the Warriors‘ recruitment of Cousins, which was led by his USA Basketball teammates Draymond Green and Kevin Durant, along with GM Bob Myers. Cousins also had “positive phone calls” with head coach Steve Kerr, league sources tell Charania.
- The Warriors were initially reluctant to believe in Cousins’ interest, according to Charania, who adds that the big man also received interest from the Pelicans, Mavericks, and Wizards. Golden State’s agreement with Cousins came together so quickly that some members of the organization were “stunned” when word of the deal broke, tweets ESPN’s Zach Lowe.
- Speaking to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated (Twitter links), Cousins called his decision to join the Warriors the “smartest move ever,” and said he’s still hoping to return from his Achilles injury for training camp. Reports tonight suggested the Dubs may be eyeing a December or January return to action for their latest acquisition.
- Cousins also told Spears that he received no significant contract offers when free agency began, but was prepared for that possibility due to his Achilles injury (Twitter link).
- While it’s not impossible that Cousins could end up hurting the Warriors more than he helps, the addition – combined with the Rockets’ loss of Trevor Ariza – appears to have further widened the gap between Golden State and the rest of the NBA, writes Kevin Pelton of ESPN.com in his breakdown of the deal.
This is way too unfair! Lebron is probably crying right now. Cant they just make a trade happen for Towns now, and get Leonard in free agency next year? As a Lakera fan, I do not like this roster signings at all.
Warriors are rumored to be closing in on a two-year deal for Mike Trout.
Trout would have gotten ten years from Philadelphia!
That can’t be true!
Hahahaha ! Good one !!!!!
I can’t take credit. I heard it somewhere else. But it was so good I had to pass it on.
Might as well, hes probably better than patchulia
The last good player LeBron has been able to recruit was Kevin Love.
The Cavs traded for Love…he wasn’t really recruited, they just had Wiggins to trade
He was definitely recruited. LeBron told Gilbert he wasn’t coming back unless he got Love. When LeBron did his team pictures, it didn’t include Wiggins. “Everybody” knew the trade was happening.
That because Golden State built the winning and unselfish culture. When you have to go to the NBA buffet of free agency to build your team, something is wrong at the top. I’m not a warriors fan, but I admire what they have done. Lakers suck
This is crazy, I am in complete shock. How do you even compete with that? Cousins can score in just about every way possible. They have the best center, best scorer, and best shooter in the game(Durant,Cousins, and Curry).
Best center? When did Anthony Davis join the Warriors?
Davis is a power forward, not a real center. That’s like calling Durant a center. Height doesn’t determine position in today’s NBA. Also, the warriors have the two best shooters in the league, the best offensive weapon, the best defensive player and now the top center. Man it’s going to be fun next year.
I’m sure Leonard Wood disagree about best defensive player in the league…
would*
Not to mention a player who could easily be the best 3 pointer of all time if he wanted to be, in Klay. Wonder how long it’ll be until he decides enough is enough, and leave due to lack of money and shots. Specially now Boogie is on board and regains 80% of what he delivered pre injury. Warriors would be made to let him go, so more money for Boogie, some money for Green and Klay will end up with the scraps when he could earn $35m/yr elsewhere
Warriors can’t keep Cousins next year, most they can offer him is about $6MM. Only way they can keep him is if he doesn’t come back from injury and no one wants him. Of course, they wouldn’t want him either.
As a NorCal guy all I can say – Cousins was always a little suspect in Sacramento. And if you look at results W-L. Both the Kings and Pelicans played better with out Cousins than with Cousins.
Likewise, Cousins hasn’t always been known for his workouts and training- recovering from his injury will require intensive rehab work- no guarantee he has the right disposition to work through this.
Obviously Cousins is going to be highly motivated to rebuild his value and NBA creditentials, but if he even he steps over the line a smidge I can see the Warriors cutting him loose in a heartbeat.
I know Cousins is a gifted basket player – just not sure if he has those “ intangibles “ that make him a winner or champion. We’ll find out next season.
Really interesting that Cousins over the past year has gone from looking at a $219 m contract to a $5.3m MLE contract.
It’d take Jordan pippin and Shaq
And after you take Jordan, Pippin and Shaq – what 2 other guys do you pick up to compete with Green and Thompson? lol Obviously I know your comment was a joke to begin with – but even in the hypothetical of acquiring Jordan, Pippin and Shaq (presumably in their prime) you’d still be short 2 (borderline) stars to compete with the Warriors.
I’m not actually trying to get in a fight about whether Jordan, Pippin and Shaq are better than the Warriors – it’s a pointless hypothetical argument anyway… I’m just saying… like wow! … this is a superstar – and then some!!!
All you need is Jordan Pippen and Shaq because you don’t need anybody to guard green. His shooting has tailed off from 2 years ago.
Klay Thompson? You just need to stick with him and don’t leave him to help. Just stick him. If you watch Utah play Joe Ingles actually does a great job guarding him because he doesn’t leave him, ever.
If the C’s end up signing Dwight H then I see it as a good thing for them at this point in his career he may want to win more then being the center of attention where with DC he may have a hard time fitting in
He doesn’t and the Celtics would be silly to sign him. He’s a a locker room cancer
Cousins isn’t playing until January. It’s tough to say how he will mesh from there on out. Odds are it’s the rich getting richer but who knows how the mercurial cousins will act when he’s the fifth option on the totem pole.
Javel McGee went off for them.. it’s now a pick up line for him
Exactly. I think it’s very disappointing as a basketball fan and someone who enjoys good sportsmanship and the thrill of competition, but there’s a lot they need to work through, not even accounting for any injuries they may experience during the season/playoffs.
The Rockets had them nearly dead-to-rights before Chris Paul went down and they went ice cold from three point range in Game 7.
They play the games for a reason, and no team is invincible.
That aspect of the acquisition should be fine. Really it’s only a 4 month deal. Cousins just has to work out, get healthy and then be a good teammate for the remainder 4 months. Then he’ll be a free agent again and hopefully have built back his value.
You can’t cheap in a video game to sign cousins to that kind of deal!
You can’t even get Durant to take a small discount or get LeBron to opt out. Video games don’t manage the “off the field” element very well.
Actually I was playing 2k once and after winning a couple titles Russell Westbrook signed for like 5 mil because of a “championship discount”. Its super rare but its in the programming I guess
Lakers goal should be confrence finals 2019. NBA finals 2020.
I can see the Lakers going after cousins next year. I mean, where else would he go?
Not unless the Warriors break up.
Papa John’s will be giving away free pizzas anytime Golden State loses a game
Ingram and Deng=22.7 mil to the Cavs for Jr Smith and Kyle Korver=22.3 mil. …..The Lakers get upgraded 3pt shooting this year and only pay JR a 3.8 mil buyout next year, instead of paying Deng 18 million. LA will then be able to max sign Kawhi in 2019.
Lakers could trade for Leonard now, but that costs them Kuzma, probably Hart, a 1st or multiple 1s, plus Ingram. The Spurs aren’t likely to take on the Deng salary, so they would then have to dump it elsewhere and that will cost more assets.
The trade also works with Ingram, Hart, Deng =24.5 mil for Kevin Love=24.5…….This makes the Lakers better now, but if Love picks up his player option next year for 25 mil, LA won’t have the flexibility to get Kawhi.
LOL i like how bad your trying to pretend its fair to get Ingram. Ingram could get them almost Kawhai. Add another player and a pick
Thanks for the response. The Lakers would save 14 million dollar on next years cap, which would allow them to sign a max guy. In addition to Ingram, it will cost Kuzma, as well as picks and possibly Hart to trade for Kawhi. If it would only take Ingram and a 1st, that trade would already to done.
There’s a -100% chance of this happening. Magic would not dare even think of looking at bringing JR into the Lakers camp after what happened in Game 1. LBJ would instantly DEMAND a trade, and I wouldn’t blame him.
No he would not. But Smith can be bought out & not brought to camp. The point is pawning off Deng, who is owed substantially more.
At this point though I think the LAL & SAS FOs are locked in a staredown and are focussing on not moving!
For Luke: If the Warriors want to keep Cousins, are they allowed to restructure Curry’s contract?
Nope, salaries can’t be renegotiated downward. With no cap room available, it’ll be virtually impossible for the Warriors to keep Cousins for longer than one year unless he’s willing to take a modest raise (20%) in year two.
More money for Boogie. Green will want his. Less for Klay, which may push Klay out the door – not to mention his drop in scoring opportunities. That’s my prediction
None of that makes sense, they can’t keep Cousins. It’s a half-year rental.
Too bad Boston didn’t get DMC, if healthy would had been their best player since the days of Larry Bird… Big miss for them, as well as they need a top center if they wanna compete with Philly.
So you figure the reaction move would be to sign Dwight Howard.
But by February when cousins joins the Warriors, Dwight Howard will have worn out his welcome, or gotten sour, or something with his new team.
Getting cousins in January is almost the best case scenario. Only 4 months to stay straight and out of trouble.
I almost wouldn’t want him for an entire season.
Can you imagine the technical fouls records set in Warrior land this year?
Lol so many techs.
As a Celtics fan I really hope they don’t sign Dwight. The locker room is full of warriors and fighters not clowns. I don’t think it’ll happen anyways because we re-signed Baynes.
“I’ll be gone til December, I’ll be gone til December. January, February, March, April, May. I see you trying, but bro, why even play?”
Hes just following in his older brothers footsteps. Mo Buckets played for GSW, now Boogie.
there are so many points id like to try and make every time i post about this but another one ill make is this. imagine how good the rockets could have been if they didnt have ryan andersons contract. or if paul didnt get hurt when up 3-2 on warriors. imagine how good lakers could be if they didnt have luol dengs contract. if you can avoid any bad contracts than any team can possibly do what the warriors did the last 4 years. and anyone on these message boards would be so ecstatic if their favorite team was in the same boat as the warriors so let them have their glory while it lasts for another 2 or 3 years
Rockets are breaking up
500 team the most
I am shock to see Houston breaking up so soon???
