With their summer league season over, the Heat have made Exhibit 10 offers to a pair of undrafted players, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.
Arkansas point guard Daryl Macon and Georgia forward Yante Maten both played well enough to make Miami want to bring them to training camp. Agents for both players say they will consider the offers but they also have opportunities with other teams.
Players with exhibit 10 contracts can make between $5K and $50K if they are waived in camp and spent at least 60 days with their team’s G League affiliate.
Macon has Exhibit 10 offers from four NBA teams, along with interest from clubs in Italy, Spain, Belgium and Korea, agent Reggie Brown tells Jackson. He adds that Macon would be guaranteed $225K if he takes the Korean offer.
“Macon has kind of an unknown quality,” said Chet Kammerer, the Heat’s VP of player personnel. “He’s gifted as far as his athleticism, his length and quickness, his ability to shoot. He’s an 87 percent career free throw shooter. Not many college guys shoot the ball that well from the line.”
Maten has received Exhibit 10 offers from “half the league,” according to his agent, Austin Walton of NEXT Sports, who adds, “We will sift through what we have and make a decision.” Walton is hoping to secure a two-way contract for Maten and said Miami wants to hold a training camp competition for its open two-way deal.
“We saw him play in the SEC and he was player of the year [as a senior],” Kammerer said. “He’s been a solid player over his career at Georgia and had some individual highs over the course of his career. He started kind of slow but he’s really a solid basketball player. Versatile. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”
The Heat currently have 11 players under contract, with roster spots set aside for Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem if they decide to continue their careers. Duncan Robinson holds one of the team’s two-way contracts.
Macon is solid as solid can be. Four year guy at Georgia who was at times the best player on the floor against some strong UK teams
Maten **** sorry
I couldn’t agree more!! Maten has worked extremely hard, and has gotten better each and every year since he got to UGA. He actually reminds me of a new-age Udonis Haslem, but much more offensively gifted, and not quite as gifted defensively.
However, he’s definitely an all-effort kind of player, and he gets the most out of the athleticism he does have. He has an outside touch, he rebounds extremely well, he exceeds in pick n roll plays as the roll man, and he can run an offense at the top of the key due to his passing ability and high basketball IQ.
With that being said though, there are some knocks on Maten. First, it seems to take him a couple of offensive chances to get going. Meaning, he needs his PG and/or his coach to get him the ball early on, and to get him some early scoring opportunities. Number two, he isn’t the most athletic nor physically gifted player. Also, finally, he isn’t very quick, and also lacks the necessary strength to bang down low with bigger, stronger, and more athletic bigs at the NBA Level.
Even so, Maten can add on some muscle, and he can eventually hold his own, that’ll just take a season or so to really get his frame NBA ready. He definitely has an NBA skillset, Maten just needs an extended chance to show teams what he’s got..The G League might be his best option for his first year, but in year’s 2 and 3, I have little doubts and concern that he’d be able to be a solid role player for a good team..
Best of luck to Maten, he definitely deserves a chance. He’s one of those players that quickly and easily becomes a fan favorite, and you just cannot help but to root for the young man!! Whichever team that gets Maten, they’re getting a talented basketball player, but they’re also getting an outstanding man!!
He’ll be able to transform his body in the Heat system. I agree that his body could be in better shape, which would help him. I think that’s something the Heat see as well
He has a much higher offensive skill set than Haslem ever had. Haslem was never a guy who was an ISO 4, he scored, and still does, most of his buckets off of putbacks, screens, or rotation swing passes for a mid range. Maten has a gifted offensive arsenal and improved his jumper tenfold at Georgia. If JJ Frazier stopped chucking floaters and stepback threes they could have been a lot better.
I like Maten more than Macon. Macon plays hard, but I’d keep Derrick Walton well before using 1 of the spots on him. Maten is a good defender and has some size and versatility, and has some intrigue offensively
…Macon should probably take the $225k and use this year to get stronger and more playing time. He could have a better shot next year
Agree if they offer him between 5-50K & other leagues up to 225K should always take it, when the offers become the same or similar, then is the time to comeback home, he is a pro needs to go where they pay him more, specially at first when you start, as a vet then you can be more selective & maybe accept a lower paying job if you like more the role or the place.
