The Knicks have released small forward Troy Williams, the team announced today (via Twitter). The move reduces New York’s roster count to 15 players on NBA contracts, plus a pair on two-way contracts.
Williams, who previously played for the Grizzlies and Rockets, signed two 10-day contracts with the Knicks following last season’s All-Star break and made a good impression, earning a rest-of-year deal. The 23-year-old’s contract agreement included a non-guaranteed salary for 2018/19 — the Knicks won’t be on the hook for any of that $1,544,951 figure.
In 17 games for the Knicks last season, Williams averaged 7.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 1.1 SPG, with a .490/.333/.704 shooting line. His non-guaranteed salary and the offseason additions of Mario Hezonja and Kevin Knox made Williams expendable.
Williams will clear waivers and become a free agent on Wednesday, assuming he goes unclaimed. It’s possible some team will place a claim, since no cap room or trade exception is required to absorb Williams’ minimum-salary contract.
This makes less than zero sense, and it’s the 3rd time I’ve said that about Troy Williams. Did he kill someone’s dog or something? I thought they got lucky to get him at the end of the year last year, and he is a perfect fit on the wing, especially with Fizdale. Houston should get back in on him off the top of my head. Portland would be a good fit…pretty much anyone looking for a 3 and D wing that plays hard
I agree. I didn’t see this coming. I thought he was a good fit and cheap….
3 and D ? 29 % from 3 isn’t too shabby although I do like Williams. I too agree he should be on a roster
He was on a non-guaranteed deal…and the other 15 players rostered were on guaranteed deals, NBA rosters are set at a maximum of 15 players, he wasn’t great in Summer League….not sure where the confusion is coming from here.
Actually he played really well in summer league. Not sure if you watched…
I guess it depends on what really well means…..I saw him get completely shut down against the Celtics..and he had an average game where he hit no 3’s against the Pelicans…that means really well?
He scored 12 ppg and averaged 4 boards in 20 minutes a game. In my opinion it was pretty good.
Yeah so well he got cut, guess the team didn’t have the same assessment
Obviously not cheap enough for NY
It’s not financial (almost nothing is guaranteed until opening night) and it’s not about roster numbers (only at 16 now, and they have until opening night to get down to 15). They liked a lot of what they saw last year, but who knows how much? The summer league performance might have played a role. His or that of other guys they want to invite to camp. Team still has BAE available to it. Part of the building process, the only surprise is doing it now.
Don’t know why they waived Troy Williams. Loved his athleticism and the way he hustles on the court. Plus he’s young and really liked him with this group under David Fizdale. Should’ve waived Ron Baker no use for him at all on this team. Maybe they resign Michael Beasley hopefully
Not in the long-term plans…not that Baker will be either, just that Williams’ salary isn’t guaranteed is the most likely reason
He didn’t fit with the rest of the squad. It’s summer league and his athleticism got him the points and rebounds. When the team got into half court he couldn’t participate. Dotson didn’t work in half court either.
Unfortunaely, he’s just the odd man out. No need to Gaurantee his deal, he wouldnt be in the rotation. Fiz will have PT at the wing for Knox, Hezonja, and even THJ in lineups so Frank can play some 2. They still have their Biannual exception to use on a vet if they choose. AND Courtney Lee, Lance Thomas will still be on the roster If they can’t find a trade. Waiving Troy now allows him to find a new team before training camp. Hope he gets claimed or maybe Houston brings him back
