JULY 6: The Lakers and Sixers have officially completed a trade that was initially reported more than two weeks ago, the Lakers announced today in a press release. The draft rights for Isaac Bonga, the No. 39 pick in the draft, are headed from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in exchange for the Bulls’ 2019 second-round pick and cash.
JUNE 20: The Lakers will acquire the No. 39 selection in tomorrow night’s draft from the Sixers, league source tells Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Lakers will send the Bulls‘ 2019 second-round pick and cash to the Sixers in return.
The 39th pick, originally owned by the Knicks, was acquired by the Sixers back in 2014 when the Knicks traded it and forward Travis Outlaw to the Sixers in exchange for forward Arnett Moultrie.
As noted by both Eric Pincus and Bobby Marks, this trade, as reported, can’t become official until the new salary cap year begins since the Sixers have already received the allotted $5.1MM in cash this season. As such, the Sixers will essentially be selecting a player for the Lakers tomorrow night.
Loading up for kawhi??? You don’t trade for the 39th pick the night before to grab a player that you’re targeting
I’d bet they are going to move 25 and 39 to a team like the Wizards or Bucks to move up to the teens. They are said to be lusting after Zhaire Smith.
I agree….I think it could be Washington in this case…they pick at #15…a few spots higher than Milwaukee.
wonder if this is to package in deal for LeBron or Kawhi
Curious to see if this leads to something else. Maybe they are trying to move down in this draft or trying to trade for someone like Kawhi
Yes, because the 39th(!) Pick is going to improve the crummy LA offering for Leonard.
Or they wait until next year sign him as feee agent and give up nothing
Trading for him this summer means you lure Lebron and George too. Don’t get Kawhi who knows what happens in a year
Good point.
Yeah, like it was a foregone conclusion that they’d sign PG too.
Got kuzma with such a move last year
Close. Kuzma and Lopez for Mozgov and Snitch.
I highly doubt the Sixers would make a move to help the Lakers get Kawhi, a guy they are also apparently targeting.
Maybe they also put Bayless in Trade then it off sets money in Trade and can be official tomorrow but at least got rid of one of their Draft Picks and a Trade.
Second-round picks don’t count against the cap until signed, and they can always slightly sweeten a trade offer. They’re helpful for a team with big plans and little wiggle room.
About the kawhi possibility. If kawhi waited till free agency next year the Lakers could have LeBron, George, LeBron won’t punt a year at his age to wait a year for kawhi and they still would need to gut the roster somewhat to fit him. If they don’t pay enough for kawhi then the spurs have no reason to just take a equal package from the clippers. Jerry west is running the show and will be aggressive. Even if they have to sell them for less they have no reason to wait at least till free agency and let LeBron make his decision and or let teams spend there money. Also no reason for a team that’s close in the east to not go for it and throw a decent offer. If Paul George re signs in OKC cause of the relationship formed in the one year with Russ that will show magic don’t be so tight this time around.
The Lakers must get rid of Deng. This pick can be thrown into the package
Nobody wants Deng 2 yr deal with 38 mill price tag. Get over it. Why should another franchise help fix lakers big mistakes. Please explain
If they send out some of their wing depth in a trade, they could theoretically use that 39th pick on one of the remaining wings/guards that should still be available before the draft goes down in quality around 45
Billy Preston
So should we just only follow Givony? Apparently he’s super “in the know” around the draft? lol
Really guys you think that the #25 + #39 can get you up to #15 or #17, it is a 2nd round man, they would be lucky if they can get up to #24.
G League!
