Patrick McCaw is one of just two restricted free agents left on the market, and his free agency is expected to end with him accepting his qualifying offer to return to the Warriors, writes Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
Because he only has two years of NBA experience, McCaw was eligible for restricted free agency this offseason and the Warriors made him an RFA by issuing a qualifying offer worth approximately $1.71MM. While that offer gives Golden State the right of first refusal in the event that McCaw agrees to an offer sheet with another team, it also serves as a one-year contract offer the shooting guard can sign outright.
Assuming McCaw signs that QO, he’d put himself on track to reach free agency again in 2019. Unlike players coming off rookie scale contracts, who become unrestricted free agents a year after accepting a qualifying offer, McCaw would be eligible for restricted free agency again next season, since he’d still have just three years of NBA experience under his belt.
Still, McCaw would receive one notable benefit from signing his qualifying offer — since he’d be re-signing on a one-year deal and would have Bird rights at the end of his contract, he’d have the ability to block any attempts to trade him during the 2018/19 league year.
McCaw, 22, had a promising rookie season in 2016/17 for the Warriors, but took a step backward last season and battled multiple injuries. In 57 games (16.9 MPG), he averaged just 4.0 PPG on .409/.238/.765 shooting. Golden State still views him as a promising – and inexpensive – young prospect with the ability to bounce back in 2018/19, however.
Besides McCaw, Cavaliers swingman Rodney Hood is the only other restricted free agent who still has a standard NBA qualifying offer on the table.
McCaw is going to have a battle on his hands for playing time with the new kid from Cincinnati.
Let’s see. Evans, The Cincy Kid wasn’t exactly lighting it up in Summer League.
McCaw was not good even before his injury. If it were up to me I would not have made that qualifying offer. Nobody else in the league seemed to have thought much of him either. I don’t believe anyone would have signed him even if he were a UFA.
I’m not a big believer in taking on huge projects with limited roster space on this team. If he makes not much improvement this season, he’s a goner from the Warriors.
McCaw had a nice rookie year. He just didn’t build on it last year because of injuries and different circumstances. He’s a good young player.
I think Evans as a little bit better on both ends of the floor and a better Prospect.
But Mccaw is a good pickup. He could develop into a good wing-like Bazemore. I don’t think my car is a huge project. His rookie year they threw him out there with the starters quite a bit. Pics of the concepts fast and at 66 can run a little Point shoot a little etc.
But why would GSW give him an offer, he isn’t that good, they should let him go & try some youngster that is FA right now, it would work out probably better for them.
He played fairly well his first year. He is young, knows the team and system and is filling the number 14 or 15 spot on the roster.
He is young and this was the GSW plan the whole time. Who do you expect them to sign or go after LOL
McCaw was one of my least favorite players for GSW last season. Damian Jones was the other.
McCaw made zero progress the entire season. For some reason Kerr seems to like him. He didn’t shoot well and his floor presence – he looked lost at times. McCaw’s player efficiency rating was 2nd worst (Damian Jones, another stiff, was the only one with worse numbers). McCaw had the second worst shooting % from inside the arc (again, Damian Jones was worse). Per 100 possessions, with McCaw on the floor, opponents outscored the Warriors by 14 points. And remember, McCaw played most of his minutes during garbage time.
As far as I’m concerned, this is a do or die season for McCaw (and Jones).
Like you said he played in garbage time. You’re going to hang five scrubs performance on him? It’s chaos out there in blow out time I know I was a scrub in college LOL you throw the ball to a guy he jacks up a 25-footer it’s like what happened to running the offense? And that’s going against my plus minus LOL
I agree Jones McCaw…prove it to me now.
