4:34pm: Howard has finalized his buyout with the Nets and will sign a one-year deal with the Wizards for the MLE after he clears waivers, tweets Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
4:11pm: The Wizards plan to offer a contract to Dwight Howard once his expected buyout with the Nets is complete, according to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post.
Howard is technically still a member of the Hornets, but that will change once the moratorium is lifted on Friday. He will be sent to Brooklyn under a deal agreed to two weeks ago, then will hit the open market if buyout negotiations go as planned.
Washington still has its $5.3MM mini mid-level exception to offer, along with a starting job. The Wizards need help in the middle after trading Marcin Gortat to the Clippers for Austin Rivers .
Don’t sleep on the Wizard’s. The East is wide open right now.
Wide open? The Celtics were one win from the finals, haven’t lost anyone of note and are getting Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward back to add to Al Horford, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier. No team in the east can match that.
Didn’t the Wizards take the Celtics to Game 7 2 years ago? They’re pretty good. I don’t think it’s a given Boston goes to the finals but yeah you’re right they’re probably the best team
2 years ago? When the Celtics didn’t have 3 of the players mentioned and 2 of them were non-contributors because they were rookie/2nd year player? That’s what you’re going with? That’s you’re counter argument? It’s not even remotely close to being a good or valid argument
Kyrie is a defensive liability, rozier is unreliable, and Hayward is coming off an entire season riding the bench due to a bad injury. The Celtics are far from favorites. Also, I must have missed the part where Tatum developed?
Huh?
Yeah, you missed that part for sure.
Yeah u missed it. 3rd in ROY voting.
Wow slapnuts…
I’m just saying watch out for the Wizards. Not dissing the Celtics. Celtics are great…seems like they beat my Warriors at least once every year for the last 3-4 years. But the Wizards are 0-0 and so are the Celtics
Who cares? I’m so glad to see EC teams step up. Nothing says the Celtics or Sixers will win anything. When you have two guys like Wall and Beale then you have to go out and get as many pieces as possible to compete. You never know who might get inured. We have yet to see how Kyrie and Hayward will fit with the other pieces. Yes, it’s an uphill challenge to get to the Finals and YES GSW will probably await you at the end like M.Bison on steroids. You still have to try and compete if you have legit all-stars. Unless your the Cavs. Then you need to trade Love and sit this year out.
Kyrie played 60ish games with the Cs. We saw “how he fits”
What difference does it make? Everyone is just playing for 2nd now anyway.
if anyone has a chance to beat Golden State it would be Boston
Yeah and still not close. 4-1 gsw your 2019 nba champions.
No one has a chance
Low key surprised he didn’t go to GSW to be the center off the bench for the VM.
There it is again. Low key bro my nephew’s start so many sentences with “low key”. U know your getting old when the kids are speaking a different form of English! Is that like a different cool way to say “on the down low”? (the dl) Sorry bout the non hoops rant guys.
It means “slightly” in a kind of sarcastic way
I’ve been following Vegas on SportsCenter. They have the Warriors at 4-7 odds and Boston at 9-2 odds. Say Boston wins east followed by some combination of Toronto, Philadelphia, Indiana, and Washington. Cavs are a year away from starting a rebuild.
Bucks are a Clint Capela Away from the Philly/Boston group.
I think the Bucks need a little more than Capela although I absolutely believe they are a team to watch the next two or three years.
Giannis is arguably the best player in the east now. Middleton, bledsoe/brogdon, (possibly parker), and maturation from young players make that a nice roster. So yes, capela signing gets them to philly boston lvl easy.

Capella and Parker, I agree.
Cavs start the rebuild.. love is going to get traded by the beginning of the season. Otherwise there is a good chance the Cavs lose its first this season and they aren’t going to have that happen.
They need to reach out to a team that is in dire need of a salary dump (Noah, etc) and take him on for a few years and take a 1st.
Its funny, Toronto could have some success in the playoffs this year and fans will likely point to Casey’s departure as the reason. With LeBron no longer owning the East, the conference is completely wide open. Boston obviously has the most depth and should be the favorites from the East, but re-adding Kyrie and Hayward may actually make them a little worse. The non-Kyrie/Hayward Celtics had a very balanced offense with unpredictable plays since there wasn’t one player on the court that teams could pinpoint as the go-to-guy (Tatum would’ve been the closest guy, but I wouldn’t say he was the definite go-to-guy for the Celtics in the playoffs last year). Now you’re adding Kyrie and Hayward, and you’re likely going to see some guys struggle as the offense skews more towards the true stars on the team. Specifically, Rozier is going to have a hard time getting enough touches with Kyrie out there healthy and likely either Brown or Tatum will see a downtick in production to give way to Hayward.
Yeah i wondered about this. But on the positive side, if they resign Smart he won’t ever have to touch the ball on offense!
Knickscavsfan…M Bison reference was top notch. Respect.
Thank you. I do it for the culture.
Nice, no risk move by Wiz. Howard’s still an impact guy defensively and on the boards. I can’t remember a prior instance where two different teams, in consecutive years, appeared so anxious to dump a player like that. Salary doesn’t explain it, as these trades weren’t really salary dumps, or at weren’t efficient ones. Both of his teams took far less talented and likely unplayable guys with bad contracts in return.
Washington has significantly improved their depth and athleticism this offseason, which was a necessity, and I believe they have improved defensively as well, which was also important. They also got the athletic big they needed. Dwight is a good fit, and he can help them with scoring in the half court on occasion.
Can’t-miss move. Wizards starters are too mature to be adversely affected by Howard’s bad habits. Still need another big.
Great move Washington! Wow now they are by far the best team in their division & they should be at least a 2nd round playoff team & a top 4 seed in the east… Real good move, I do like DH12. Someone was saying Milwaukee is just a Capela away from the top of the east, personally I still take DH12 ahead of Capela, better scorer, rebounder & defender, no doubt DH12 brings more to the table, Capela needs to improve quite a lot to be at the same level than DH12.
He should just quit. What could have been a decent career has turned into a journeyman players. Of lebron didnt go to the lakers I could see Howard being one of his many castaway players like he had so many with him on Miami. If lebrons father was confined to a wheelchair I could see him calling greg oden to be the waterboy or old man in his case.
