While Klay Thompson is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Warriors, his father Mychal Thompson doesn’t expect Klay to leave the Bay Area anytime soon, as Scott Ostler of The San Francisco Chronicle details.
“Oh yeah, you can mark it down,” Mychal Thompson told Ostler. “Klay’s going to retire in the Warriors’ uniform. He’s going to play at Chase Center (the Warriors’ new arena, opening in 2019), and he’s not going to be at Chase Center as a visiting player, he’s going to be a Warrior for the next seven or eight years.”
The Warriors are said to be interested in completing an extension with Klay Thompson at some point before he reaches free agency in 2019. He would be eligible for a more lucrative deal if he waits to hit the open market, but there has been speculation that he’d be open to accepting a team-friendly offer worth less than the max. If that’s the case, he and the Warriors could work something out in the coming months.

Of course, Mychal Thompson’s opinions on his son’s future don’t come with any guarantees. It will be up to Klay whether or not he wants to remain in Golden State for the long term. The 28-year-old is only the third option on a potent Warriors offense that features Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, so the opportunity to be the leading scorer – with a new maximum-salary contract – on another team could be appealing. However, the Warriors provide him the best chance to compete for a title on a yearly basis, as his father points out.
“He’s got such a good thing here,” Mychal Thompson said, per Ostler. “The Warriors have such a special thing here. For the next six or seven years, they’re going to be championship material, they’re not going to break that up. The (1990s) Bulls were broken up too prematurely. (Warriors co-owners) Joe Lacob and Peter Guber aren’t going to let that happen. Are you kidding? They can afford it. They’re the Warriors, this is the Bay Area, they got a beautiful arena, and money’s no object for this team.”
For his part, Klay Thompson has also said in the past that he would like to stick with the Warriors, albeit in more general terms than those used by his father. He maintained that stance during a conversation with Mark Medina of The Bay Area News Group, indicating that he’d like to be a “Warrior for life.”
“Contract negotiations are way down the line,” the four-time All-Star said. “But I think we all have the same interest. I would love to be here for the rest of my career.”
A lot more rings for Golden State, maybe 2-3 more if Klay re-signs. Durant isn’t going anywhere either, Lebron will be ringless for the next 4 years.
Wanna bet?
I’ll bet anything. LeBron won’t even make the playoffs. Holden state is a proven winner, one of the best teams ever assembled across all pro sports. Klay and curry want to be warriors for life and are the perfect compliment to one another. LeBron needed the league to ignore rules (traveling much?) And over hype the crap out of him to pretend he s a potential goat. The league went into a tailspin when Jordan retired and LeBron was used to pull up on the stick. The warriors are a legitimate hall of fame type team. There hasn’t been a draw like the warriors since mj’s bulls. Not only that, LeBron simply can’t beat the warriors without the league rigging games for him. Get over it.
I would bet he wins nothing this season or next. Couple grand seems acceptable.
Just b/c of age and injury, I’d say 3-4 years. Steph and KD aren’t LeBron durable. They’ll have to suck it up financially and pay that tax money. Draymond would be the most likely to go. Steph/KD/Klay are like top-5 shooters in he league, can’t let anyone go. You can find a guy to grab boards and play D, maybe not handle the rock as well, but you can find a glue guy.
They do have Jordan Bell who is more athletic than Green ever has been.
Klay said the same thing as his dad this weekend. They were having their inaugural golf tournament in the San Franciso area. Durant says he wants to play 5 more years. It would be awesome to see all 3 together. Eat crow LeBron. You had to have you, Wade, and Bosh for not 5, not 6, not 7 championships. Golden State may get it. Now what to do with Draymond.
Man I can’t wait for LeBron to flourish in LA and quiet the recent bandwagon Warrior fans. I’ve been a basketball fan for 40+ years and didn’t hear a peep out of the Bay Area regarding basketball until a few years ago. Enjoy it now because it’ll be awhile again before it ends.
Really? Warriors fans have had one of the most solid fan bases even when they were terrible. That’s why the franchise sold for a record amount almost 10 years ago.
Solid? Another delusional warriors fan, prior to winning the 3 chips in recent years this team was middling in terms of fans support and overall revenue. Now you can go to any city and see people wearing warriors hats or jerseys, but that will fade once they become mortal.
I’m not a Warriors fan, simply talking facts. They sold for a record $450 million. How could they be worth that much without a fanbase?
I know you “think” that but prior to their winning ways they usually ranks 10th in attendance. Only fair for such a large affluent fan base with no hockey competition and bad baseball in Oakland.
Except it’s the bay area, so 20 minutes away are the giants who were also winning like crazy and the 49ers who were actually good. Also, the sharks are a few miles south. Try again…
The bay area CA is the second or third most populated area with one NBA team. IDK what your point is but the Warriors have a huge potential base, and a wealthy one.
You’re also ignorant about James but that’s old news. Eurostepping is not travelling.
No offense. LeBron hasn’t exactly flourished against Golden State since KD joined them. LeBron lost 8 of 9 games, and KD got 2 Finals MVP’s. If KD retires in 5 years, he could have 7 championships to LeBron’s 3 and retire before LeBron.
Ain’t happening. Injuries are due. The Warriors will struggle this season and might win the West but I’d bet Houston wins the West. They’re hungrier…….
No offense, but KD and Steph have had injuries and they’ve still beaten LeBron 8 0f last 9, and it wasn’t even close. They add Demarcus Cousins this year, and a new arena next year.
Long term Warrior fans haven’t had a lot to crow about until this run. That is why you haven’t heard from us until now. I had to bring to work my old Rick Barry scholastic books, my Chris Mullens t-shirt, and Run TMC poster to prove I was a true fan. But, come to think of it I can’t recall knowing a Cavalier fan until LaBron arrived? If you look at historic record both team had long losing droughts. Though Warriors are only behind Celtics and Lakers in all time NBA Championships.
Kudos for Klay for staying true & loyal to the team, let’s see when his production dwindles if GSW do the same.
Typical child mentality, anyone who likes a winning team is bandwagon fan and not a real fan like me. Grow up.
