11:25am: Butler hasn’t joined the Wolves for training camp yet and has asked to sit out until he has been traded, Wojnarowski and Lowe report in a full story.
8:51am: Little progress has been made in Jimmy Butler trade talks because teams believe the Timberwolves are asking too much in return, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Minnesota owner Glen Taylor hopes to get a deal get done soon, but the organization is holding out for an offer that provides quality veterans, top prospects, future assets and cap relief. The price has been too high so far for all the teams interested in Butler, including the Heat, who are said to be the most aggressive. Because Miami is well over the cap, it is unable to offer anything in the way of cap relief, notes Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel (Twitter link).
Sources tell Wojnarowski they’re skeptical that coach/executive Tom Thibodeau wants to part with Butler, even after Taylor’s mandate. ESPN colleague Zach Lowe adds that it’s not possible to exaggerate “how volatile things are in Minnesota right now.” (Twitter link)
Wojnarowski also reported last night that the Suns, who are in the market for a point guard, looked into getting involved to help facilitate a three-team trade, but decided what the Wolves were asking was “far too steep” (Twitter link). There hasn’t been any communication about sending Jeff Teague or Goran Dragic to Phoenix, but that could still happen if Minnesota and Miami make progress on trade talks.
It has been nine days since Butler met with Minnesota’s front office and issued his trade request. Taylor wanted to get a deal done quickly to “avoid a circus” in training camp, but the situation doesn’t appear close to a resolution. Miami is reportedly Butler’s first choice among trading partners, but so far that hasn’t made a difference.
SOoooooooo
based on the above information we should expect Butler to be traded within the next 24 hours ??
“Quality veterans, top prospects, future assets and cap relief” is a ridiculous ask by Minn. Pick 2 at most. Kyrie went for vets and assets. Paul George went for prospects. Butler originally went for prospects and assets. Kawhi went for vets and assets. No one gets all 4. Maybe an entering their prime superstar on a long term deal would get all 4. Maybe.
And 3 items are in plurals! That means Thibs wants at least 7 things?? Let them stew in their juices.
Quality vets near the caliber of Jeff Green, and Morris brothers, prospects near the caliber of
Exum and Portis, assets such as a top 59 protected second that’s gone if not conveyed, and 1m in reduced payrolls for a year or two.
So technically, you can have all 4.
You want more than the caliber of Jeff Green if you’re trading.
That Kyrie trade was trash. The only thing of value was the pick.
if lebron wasn’t such a prick than players wud of lined-up to chase a ring.. besides dwade, lebron recruited who to clev?
Some Lebron-haters say he’s the GM, that he recruited the whole team. Get together & get the story straight.
The article says that the bidders are “skeptical” that Thibs truly wants to trade Butler, and that the atmosphere in Minnesota is “volatile.” Dan Gilbert and Gregg Popovich gave in to Kyrie and Kawhi. Thibs is trying to do the opposite. Thibs told Butler he’d give him a wee to rehab his hand then he wanted him to report. Butler said no. We’ll see what happens next week when he isn’t traded, and he doesn’t report. LeVeon Bell episode no. 2. Not getting along with management is what got Thibs fired in Chicago.
Tom needs to get fired simple as that, he’s the one delaying a move. I don’t want to hear the excuse of not being able to find chemistry between Wiggins,Towns, and Butler because Golden State has had no problem integrating Durant with Curry and Klay so the difference is obvious. TOM CAN’T coach 3 stars, it’s not an easy task period.
That said I blame Tom for everything, he should have found a way to build a relationship with Wiggins to send across the message on what he wanted from him, Butler shouldn’t have to express his disappointment in Towns and Wiggins’s efforts on the court, it’s Tom’s job to get all 3 on the same page but too late for that.
i would not say no issue with GS as green and kerr have had issues same with curry and Durant and as you recall was it west who said there was BHS stuff.
Thibs is a good coach BUT maybe is loyal to “his” guys to a fault like many coaches.
West later said that he made that up. Said there were times in practice where Draymond was yelling at Ker, but that’s Draymond. Read Butler has 30 days after start of season to report or lose a year of service and his free agency next summer, but he could do like Kyrie and threaten another surgery on his hand.
Wiggins isnt a start though lol cant play d
Can we package Thib with Butler??
Agree Completely!! Thibs is and has been the problem !
Thibs is a “my way or the highway” and that no longer works in the Association. He should go get on a crew that is paving the cow paths. Butler has to go and then they do a rebuild. Owner doesn’t have common sense….giving KAT or anybody a max contract is a waste of money. KAT has not earned it!!! Dumpster fire…strike a match.
KAT hasn’t earned it even though he’s had a historic start to his career by any account? Gtfo
KAT hasnt earned it!!! He just a glorified top 3 big man in the league like Demarcus Cousins. Lazy Bums!!! Hahahahahahaha.
Butler thinks hes a max player so Minny is requesting max player collateral. Simple. You can pay Walmart prices for Gucci. If you expect that then you need to really inspect the quality of what you’re buying.
If I’m miami, I’d offer any of the following for Butler:
Dragic, McGruder and Bam
Dragic and Winslow
Other than that, I wouldn’t offer Richardson. Maybe I’d throw in a pick, if needed, but other than that, I wouldn’t offer more than that.
I’m sorry but Richardson shouldn’t be untouchable .. kind of reminds me how fans used to say oh you cant trade crowder or IT … little bit of a over value there I think .. butler is a legit 25+ a night and plays top notch D.
I wouldn’t call him untouchable. I would get rid of him as part of a package in a heartbeat, for top tier stars such as A Davis… but 3 years of Richardson on the cheap IN ADDITION to younger players with potential, such as Winslow and Bam, or a fringe all star in Dragic, is too rich for one year of Butler… Especially in a situation where the Heat seem to have more leverage…
Richardson has one of the best value contracts in the NBA right now
yes and there is a lot to be said about value contracts but he doesn’t bring to the table the variables butler does .. its like for example Pat Beverly with hou in 2016 his contract was friendlier then cp3s right .. numbers actually pretty close in terms of 2016 BUT you can not tell me that having CP3 over pat isn’t what got the ROX so franchise records in wins and a deep play off run this past season.
I’m not arguing Richardson and Butler. I’m just saying I wouldnt give him up in this kind of a trade. I made the same argument you’re making in regards to everyone else though
You’re assuming only one year of Butler. There will be more if the Heat are interested.
As a Heat fan, I’m cool with any combination involving future picks, Whiteside, Waiters, James Johnson, Olynyk, Derrick Jones, McGruder and then Dragic, Bam or Winslow if necessary. I wouldnt be willing to move anyone else.
I had an iteration of a possible deal worked out on paper, but it was before the draft, and before the new cap figures for this year came into play. Now it would be a bit more complicated, and I’m not sure how it would get done. I would prefer not to move Richardson or Winslow, but if I had to move Winslow for Butler, ultimately that’s something that should probably be done, as much as I think highly of Winslow, and I think Pat Riley would see it the same way
Heat chances of an upgrade are good!
So u named 9 of the 18 currently on the roster?
Point being?
Butler is a good player. He’s not a superstar
Who’s a superstar?
So who’s a superstar? Like 8 players?
That’s what I’m wondering. Seems like he’s more than just “good.”
I like what someone said recently, Butler isn’t a top 10, but he’s a top 20.
He is much closer to top 10 than top 20, even if you dont have him in your top 10
Amico Hoops reports that Cleveland and Miami are only teams that have talked to Minnesota. Miami is willing to take Giorgui for the right price. All the other teams have just expressed interest. Philadelphia is out of running and never was in it after initial discussion. Chris Sheridan says Thibs is trying to get fired.
ESPN Insiders Bobby Marks and Brian Windhorst think a Hassan Whiteside/Josh Richardson for Gorgui Dieng/ Jimmy Butler may be the best offer Minnesota could get in a 48 hour window!
Butler is the best dude on the second tier of stars in the league. Because he’s a two way player. There’s not many clear super stars. But there’s a lot of star players. I’d say probably 7-8 actual super stars and then from 9-20ish r stars. And there’s a HUGE difference from being a SUPERSTAR dude and a Star dude. LeBron, Durant, Curry, Kyrie, Westbrook, Kawai(when healthy), Giannis r legit super stars. Butler isn’t in that superstar group.
