OCTOBER 13: Winslow’s extension is official, per RealGM’s NBA transactions log.
OCTOBER 12: Heat forward Justise Winslow has agreed to a three-year, $39MM extension, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. The agency representing Winslow, Roc Nation, hammered out the deal with Heat president Pat Riley a few days before Monday’s rookie scale extension deadline.
The extension includes a third-year team option, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
The Sun Sentinel reported on Tuesday that the two parties were close to an extension agreement.
The agreement greatly reduces the possibility of Winslow being included in a potential trade with the Timberwolves for Jimmy Butler, as CBA rules would complicate his value for salary-matching purposes.
With Devin Booker and Karl-Anthony Towns having already signed new deals, Winslow becomes the third player from the 2015 rookie class to secure an extension. There are still 2o players eligible for a rookie scale extension this year. If those players don’t sign new contracts by next Monday, they’ll be on track to become restricted free agents during the summer of 2019.
Winslow, the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft, has not quite developed as quickly as the franchise hoped, though he showed some improvement last season. The extension will be well worth it if he effectively holds down a rotation spot during the life of the contract.
Winslow’s contract adds more guaranteed money to already hefty payroll. The Heat will now have approximately $133MM in salary commitments (including player options) for the 2019/20 season. They’ll have to make some moves to avoid paying luxury tax penalties following that season.
Winslow shot 38% from long range last season but only posted modest overall numbers, averaging 7.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, and 2.2 APG in 68 games (24.7 MPG). However, Winslow has the ability to defend multiple positions and averaged 1.6 steals last season.

Assuming 8% raises and ascending contract yearly breakdown goes 12.037 million (19/20), 13.000 million (20/21) and 13.963 million (21/22)
That’s good, hopefully that means the Heat won’t give in to the Wolves. At least Winslow is safe I guess.
Actually i could get behind the butler for Richardson, bam and next Years first. I mean, they have Hassan. He’s not terrible they just decided to pay him a lot and stop playing him. Lose bam you lose a dollar store Ibaka in his prime, and gain a Jimmy butler that is a diva but also would be a talented diva in a situation that made him happy. That 1st would mean nothing. Heat would be 3 in the east for sure.
The Heat as the 3 seed after losing Richardson and Bam is pretty funny. I love Jimmy but that roster is less than inspiring
I doubt Winslow was ever discussed in a Butler trade. Wolves lack sufficient 3 pt shooting on the wings even with Butler. They’re stuck with Wiggins, so adding Winslow in place of Butler opposite him would make no sense. If he were a discussed piece, I doubt the signing would have been finalized until after Butler was dealt or the deadline at the end of the month.
Winslow would have played the 4 for Minnesota, but I wouldnt have wanted to trade him anyway
You mean you would have played him at the 4. Thibs wouldn’t; nor would the balance of the roster accommodate it.
Depending on what would have gone back, they could have theoretically done Teague, Okogie, Wiggins, Winslow, KAT…but I get your point. Just b/c something is right doesnt mean coaches do it, which is something you see around the league, although most teams have gotten better at it over the last year or so
The deadline for rookie-scale extensions is on Monday, not at the end of the month, so they really couldn’t wait much more to resign him. I don’t know if Winslow was part of the Butler trade discussions or not, but not waiting till Monday to extend him looks to me like a sign that the Heat are not hoping to land Butler anymore.
Nice. This could be a big bargain as he continues to get better, and it also aligns his deal with other money coming off the books
Thank God the Heat held onto to that pick for Winslow. Saved trader Danny from an enormous mistake. Winslow is garbage
Heat could stretch Whiteside next year, save $18MM and bring roster cost down to $115MM. Stretching Tyler J would save $13MM.
Winslow seems worth it, but on the other hand… he’s a backup who played 1680 minutes with nothing new opening up; and he is in the minus, while Olynyk, Richardson & James J are are way in the plus side.
Winslow missed almost his entire 2nd season with wrist and shoulder injuries….
Yes, and it’s also kind of a point that he then played in 68 last year. That is not terrible but, not a strong bounceback either.
I would have waited.
Winslow and Josh Jackson are gonna compete to be the next modern day Gerald crash Wallace! Anyone who takes exception to that underestimates crash peak a peak neither of those guys are sure to match let alone surpass
winslow’s not a starter – altho considering ‘19 free agents it’s a sideways move. pat really needs to move the needle with a home run
