OCTOBER 8: Cherry has signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Warriors, tweets Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, adding that the guard is expected to end up playing in Santa Cruz.
SEPTEMBER 19: The Warriors are expected to add Will Cherry to their 20-man offseason roster, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. A source tells Carchia that Cherry is set to sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the defending champions.
Cherry, who went undrafted out of Montana in 2013, appeared in eight games for the Cavaliers during the 2014/15 season, but has otherwise spent most of his professional career playing overseas. Having played in Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, the 6’0″ point guard last suited up for Croatian club Cedevita Zagreb.
In 25 ABA League games last season, Cherry averaged 11.1 PPG and 3.2 APG. He also posted a team-best 11.8 PPG and 4.1 APG in 15 EuroCup contests.
The Warriors technically only have 13 players on guaranteed contracts, but Patrick McCaw figures to eventually become the 14th, and the team will likely start the season with an open roster spot to avoid increasing its projected tax bill. As such, Cherry may end up with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s G League affiliate.
For the Warriors, I’ve read a lot on Kevin Durant. He says he doesn’t want to be compared to M.J. Doesn’t care about awards (doesn’t think he’ll ever get another MVP since he plays for the Warriors, and says he loves his teammates for their concern for each other and not judging each other). Doesn’t want to be ball dominant (he just wants to be himself, thinks the tall guys are at a disadvantage dribbling the ball so high). And he isn’t like Kobe or LeBron, he is about winning, not winning championships. Saw a comparison to Larry Bird. I can see that.
Kevin Durant is in no way similar to Larry Bird. Larry Bird is of the same mold as Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan. They will slice your throat to get a win.
Kevin Durant is of the same mold as Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, Wilt Chamberlain and Tim Duncan. Great players some of the best all time. But they won’t take everything they have to kill you to win.
Kobe, Jerry West, and LeBron are with Bird magic and Jordan.
Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, are with Durant and David Robinson.
You’re all haters plain and simple!
Not a hater. I loved the Celtics when Bird played with them, and love them now. Love the Warriors now too. Enjoy watching good basketball.
I’m the biggest Warrior Homer you’ve ever seen. Larry Smith Chris Mullin and Terry Teagle Rod Higgins Joe Barry Carroll Joe Smith. Adonal Foyle Patrick O’Bryant sleepy Floyd Lester Conner Todd Fuller Ike diogu…. those are just some of the guys that I can remember watching from the top of my head.
As close as Curry, Draymond, Klay, and Durant are, I can imagine them laughing at everybody wanting to see them breaking up. I’m from Purdue. We called Carroll Joe Barely Cares. You should remember Nate Thurmond. He played for the san Francisco Warriors and Cleveland. I think Mullin was on the 1999 Pacers team that played against Kobe and Shaq in the Finals. I remember Sleepy Floyd from Georgetown.
I grew up at the same time as Bird. We were in high school at the same time. Both from Indiana. Saw him at Indiana State. Bird, like Durant, is surrounded by stars. They are the same height and build. Both their shooting strengths are their biggest assets. Both are good rebounders. Both don’t have to be ball dominant to be effective. Both can be team leaders, but don’t have to be. Larry was a great passer, and both are unselfish. Both are humble, and don’t let their egos get the best of them. They are 2 of the best big man shooters.
I got to see Larry in person against the college I went to. I’ll never forget it. Larry and Kevin Durant will be known for their 3 point shooting. Durant was at Texas. Bird was at Indiana State ( he will always be remembered for losing to Magic and Michigan State in the National Championship game). If the games on the line, they are 2 of the best to give the ball to.
I think the Celtics talent wise with Bird, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Danny Ainge are similar to what the Warriors have now.
Gary is right.
