Before the 2018/19 season started, the Celtics looked like they were primed to receive two first-round draft picks in next summer’s 2019 NBA draft – their own selection and the first-round pick of the Kings or Sixers (Boston gets the most favorable of the two, or the least favorable if one is the No. 1 pick).
However, a strong start to the season for both the Clippers and the Grizzlies has put the C’s in position to realistically pick up both those clubs’ 2019 first-round picks as well for a total of four 2019 first-round picks.
As it stands currently, the Celtics will receive the Grizzlies’ selection if it falls between picks 9-30, and Memphis is currently tied with San Antonio for the NBA’s ninth-best record. Meanwhile, the Celtics will also receive the Clippers’ 2019 first-round selection if it falls between selections 15-30, with Los Angeles currently tied with the Thunder for the league’s sixth-best record.
It’s still early in the season, of course, and both the Grizzlies and Clippers may eventually move back into position to retain their picks, but both Memphis’ and L.A.’s fast starts have made the issue an interesting discussion.
So, with that being said, how many picks with the Celtics end up with in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft? Vote in the poll below and share your thoughts in the comments section!

The rich get richer
They need an athletic big the one thing this draft doesn’t have and dont say Zion he’s 6’7 and yes he can out jump any 7 footer but he not the player they need
They have an athletic big already in Robert Williams. He’s been very impressive so far in limited minutes. Also, Bol Bol is in this draft and he’s a long 7:3. Naz Reid is also projected top 10 and he’s 6:10. If they have a lottery pick and want to go gig, there’ll be a quality choice there waiting for them.
Not necessarily. The drafted players will likely just suffer because they will not get opportunity to play and the Celtics as a whole will likely be relatively unaffected.
I’m not sure about that. They will probably trade Rozier. They aren’t really as deep as everyone thinks. Besides on the wing. Smart is really a combo guard. And they can always make a trade to free up a key spot on the second team rotation. Morris could b on the move next year. They need to clear some of the vets to make the cap room to pay Kyrie, Tatum and Brown as well.
When the draft gets here, what do they do? They won’t keep 4 1st round picks. Trade up? Trade out? Trade for players. Probably why they’re in no hurry to trade Rozier. Morris “is” their bench right now. I’ll bet they re sign him. Like game 7 in the eastern conference finals last season, their shooting stinks. Hayward is offering to come off the bench now until he’s right.
Gotta move some of these picks, can’t add four rookies to a championship level squad.
Probably will be hard to move up to the top 5 of the draft with some of these prospects. Wonder who Danny will go after in the offseason.
They’ll almost certainly create some package of picks/roster players to move up to grab Barrett or Williamson or someone else. They’re in an enviable position. Theyir shooting doesn’t stink. They have several very good outside shooters in Irving, Tatum and, when he gets his legs back under him, Hayward. Brown and Rozier have their moments and Horford can chip in at the 3-point line. They were 2nd in the league last year in 3-pt %. Even this year, with Irving and Hayward coming back from injuries, they’re 10th. That not only doesn’t stink, it’s a genuine asset.
They’ll really need the Kings to crash back to earth for that. As it stands now its looking like they’ll have two picks in the early teens and then two late round picks. They would have to add a lot to those picks to move into the top 3, don’t think Rozier and two late lottery picks is gonna do it.
hey there’s plenty of time till the draft to trade for more picks
This draft is very heavy on wings, exactly what Boston doesn’t need more off, while is very thin in guards & centers which is what they need… not a good combination, their best option is try to get Bol Bol he is an absolute stud, at 7’2″ the guy handles like a guard, shoots like a guard… the perfect big for the modern day… & still will grow more apparently.
“Thin in guards”
Kyrie, Smart, Rozier… not to mention that Jaylen starts at the 2
He meant the draft is thin on guards.
3. I don’t see the Clippers making the playoffs.
I think they end up with three, the Grizzlies pick will convey. Four wouldn’t shock me, the Clips are playing like a fringe playoff team, but easier to see the Grizz finish 10 or up than Clips finish 15 or up.
With three firsts, I don’t see the C’s using any of them, they’re trade bait. Imagine three 1sts, and Hayward as a package, assuming Gordon works his way back to pre-injury level. If the Pels start feeling the pinch from AD, it would be hard pressed to see a team give up a better package that would convey all at one time.
Hayward only has one year left after this and then a player option. A package of him and a couple late lottery picks for Davis would leave a lot to be desired.
They will end up with 5 since they will trade Rozier for a 1st round pick.
Most people get rich because they do smart things and look long term..which is what Boston has been doing for a while
Boston is gonna have to do something with these assets soon. As it stands, if the picks all convey this year they won’t have anymore extra assets coming, just their own late round picks.
Leave the draft with Bol Bol and Jaylen hands. Terry Rozier won’t be back and they could use a quality big for the future.
