The Lakers appear to be the favorite to land Anthony Davis, though it isn’t stopping other teams from pursuing the former No. 1 overall pick. The Bucks are entering the Davis sweepstakes, according to longtime sports journalist Gery Woelfel (Twitter link).
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the only player who isn’t on the table in trade talks, Woelfel hears. Still, if the Pelicans are looking to rebuild post-AD, it’ll be difficult for Milwaukee to make a competitive offer.
The Bucks are unable to trade a first-round pick until the 2023 season at the earliest, as the Suns own their 2019 selection and the Cavs own their 2021 pick. Eric Bledsoe and Khris Middleton can hit free agency this summer, which decreases their trade value, and after Milwaukee’s big three, there isn’t much on the roster to get overly excited about as a player headlining a trade package (apologies to President Malcolm Brogdon).
Milwaukee would provide Davis with a chance to win, as the team sits atop the Eastern Conference standings. The Giannis-AD pairing would certainly be among the most exciting in the league, though it feels like a pipe dream for all the Wisconsin hopefuls.
Yeah it would be awesome but I don’t see it happening
Hard to believe that a team as good as the Bucks has virtually no good trade assets, at least to facilitate a rebuild. Even Brogden is a RFA. What do the Pels need with that headache at the start of a long rebuild? DJ Wilson looks good (Donte and Maker not really, but might turn out). But no foundation pieces to build a trade for AD. Practically, there won’t be picks until 2024, because the one to the Suns won’t vest this year absent a collapse.
For the Bucks to make something work, they’d have to find a third team to involve willing to give up a high pick.
I think it may take a 4th team to take on a contract (Snell). But one of those teams would be a destination for Brogdon. That’s where you may get an asset for the Pels. Instead of overbidding for him, having him as an RFA you can just match.
Suns or Magic would be the likely suspects sending Josh Jackson or Isaac to the Pels.
Outside that, its Donte, Maker, and Wilson.
I think you found a really interesting option (Brogdon to Phoenix). But I dont know it would be Josh Jackson going back in that scenario, unless maybe you consider him to be something besides a 4, as of now, or dont mind that issue with DJ Wilson. If Jackson improves the jumpshot, he could theoretically play the 2 or 3, so it could be a bet on his upside, the cheaper option against the RFA of Brogdon, and the extra asset.
I could also see a TJ Warren potentially moving in this type of a deal, with his improved jumpshot, as he wont be 26 until training camp. I still consider him to be a scoring 4 off the bench, but the improved jumpshot could allow him to see minutes at the 3 in defensive lineups
Lakers have best offer right now. If knicks trade kp and knox i could see them being a player.
Forewarning. Danny Ainge has told the Pelicans to sit tight and has been talking trade for some time. You disagree with everyone in the media who says the Celtics have the best package, and the Pelicans will wait for Jayson Tatum. I listen to the true analysts.
Ainge, Celtics won’t be deterred by talk of Davis extension (Amico Hoops)
I think it actually behooves the Pelicans to trade AD now. Unless Ainge trades Kyrie as part of a 3-way (which would be an interesting twist), I don’t think he’ll get a shot.
Unless the NOP know they’re going to replace their GM – which they should do. Then they should wait and let the person who will actually build the team deal AD for assets that they’d want.
But if it’s Dell Demps, then I think AD goes before the trade deadline. And if that’s the case, the Lakers probably have the strongest offer. Demps won’t trade AD to the Lakers though. So… where does that leave AD? In Denver or Toronto?
Lakers are 3rd at best, behind Boston and New York.
You’ve also got sleepers like Denver, philly and. Even Phoenix that could put together better offers.
If you are trading Davis your best bet is full rebuild. A Laker trade gives you the nucleus of a team that just went 5-10 with LeBron out, and Ball, Kuzma and Ingram all have paydays coming in the next few years.
Oh, and NO would be monumentally stupid to not wait for the summer.
Who does NY have beside KP and Knox that have the kind of value NO wants in a trade for Davis, KP has a year left until free agency and no way he will want to stay in NO do now it’s down to Knox, the French pg and the pick. I would take the lakers offer over that if you can get Lonzo, Kuzma and hart and two picks I like that much better because that is three starters to go along with holiday, randle and mirotic, that team could get into the playoffs in the east. The team that everyone really need to worry about is Boston if NO waits until the offseason and they can get 3 of the 4 first they have this year, one in 2021 and two players like brown and idk who for salary that works but that would be the best deal for NO they need to get draft picks and players in there first or second year because no one wants to stay and play in NO. NO is a great city but is not a place players want to go to play basketball
good thing new Orleans is in the west bud… and not saying Lakers don’t have the better assets but the Knicks have plenty. Porzingis,Knox, Frank, Robinson and the number 1 pick. and porzingis doesnt have a choice but to stay in NO because he is going to be a restricted free agent. NO can match any offer
It’s pretty damning when a star like Davis has zero interest in playing for his hometown team (Bulls). Speaks volumes about that organization.
Yep. They suck
Yeah, the team sucks, but my point was the Bull could easily put together the best trade package of ANY team. Markkanen, Carter, maybe LaVine or Portis and a lottery pick. The problem is they have to trade all their assets to get him. And the rumors I’m hearing are that Davis has no interest in playing for the current owner/front office in Chicago anyway. Freaking pathetic how the poor reputation of the team keeps elite players away from a rabid fan base like the Bulls.
Yeah it is a shame. They’ll be back sometime, but not anytime soon
Yeah, id be good for Ticket sales to pur Portis and Mirotic back into the same team !!
I’d pay to watch Portis beat the breaks off Mirotic again.
If the Knicks get a top 3 pick, then (without KP who isn’t in the deal regardless of where they rank), then their offer is better than the Lakers for sure, and behind Boston only if they include Tatum or they get a top 4 pick themselves. This assumes the Pels have a clue as to how to build a team (which is far from certain).
The Lakers best would presumably include Ingram, Ball, Kuzma and Hart, plus picks. Simple – Think any team with a top 3 pick (Zion, Morant, Barrett) would trade it outright for any two of those first 4 guys-? I don’t, and I don’t think it’s a long conversation. When has it happened-? High picks, like luxury cars, depreciate fast after draft day unless they out perform. A rebuilding team like the Pels isn’t worried about next year’s team, but their team 3 years from now.
The Knicks best offer, with a top 3 pick, would also have Knox, Robinson and a guard of their choice, with a couple other picks. All cheap for the next few years, as they continue to pick in the Knicks vs the Lakers spot.
The Knicks would need the top overall pick to compete with a Boston package headed by Tatum, and even then, if Boston is willing to go all in beyond that, Pels should deal with them.
If the Knicks could unload THJ, Lee, Thomas, Ntilikina then you trade KP and Knox. Still will have to give up that 1st. But.. you’re starting over with AD and they could enough cap space for 2 max players. Imagine luring KD and Kawhi. East is over.
I’d pass on trading KP, unless KD and KL (or one and KI) were lined up to sign, then obviously do what it takes. In that case, I would think KP and Knox/picks would do it (he was a top 10 asset on most lists before the injury). So, if he shows he’s healthy later in the year, I think I can keep the 2019 top pick or make that the full package. AD asked for trade and has only a year left on his contract, so Pels can’t expect full value. Honestly, if I’m the Pels, I’d be looking to flip KP after signing him anyway, so I might just prefer to take everything else, and some remote picks.
Realistically, we both know that most max FAs are unlikely to move and I see the Knicks as the top outside team only for KI (KW too, even more so, but I don’t think he’s a true max, too bad – he’s had more success in the Garden than any current Knick). KD and KL play ball here (like most American players), but they have no other connection to NYC. I’d really try to include THJ in the AD deal, because that alone would keep the KI possibility in effect, and it does that even if I took back a worse but slightly smaller / shorter contract like Hill (who is really done). Pels might see that as a plus. Lee and Hill have just one more year each and are stretchable over just 3 years, and it’s really a wash if a 2019 max is added to the other things (Noah and KP extension increment) on the payroll in 2020 and 2021. Thomas is expiring (non-guaranteed next) and Frank can be dealt a number of places without taking back $$ if we don’t ask for anything.
Woelfel is terrible. The Bucks are going to do due diligence like every team. This isn’t news, and Woelfel doesn’t have sources.
I speculated on Milwaukee making an interesting offer. I think they have multiple iterations of deals that are at least comparable to most of the others…and let’s be honest, lol this would be the most fun team to see him go to, outside of Toronto or GS, maybe with LeBron.
I can’t imagine the Bucks coming up with a deal that works for NOP, but who knows with Demps?
It would be SUPER fun to see Davis play alongside the Greek Freak. Especially in Budenholzer’s offensive schemes.
their picks are locked up a bit due to protections. They can offer Brogdon, Snell, Thon Maker, Brook Lopez, DJ Wilson 2019 1st round pick and rights to swap 2021 and 2023 1st round picks for Davis
Please don’t use Gery as a source
Thon Maker??
