The Knicks and Lakers are each preparing to make an offer to the Pelicans for Anthony Davis, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reports.
The Lakers’ front office met earlier today to discuss potential offers as well as mapping out the franchise’s plans. LeBron James and Davis share an agent and speculation about Davis’ preference will continue to point at the 25-year-old coming to Los Angeles.
The Knicks may be the lead contender for Davis in the Eastern Conference. Haynes hears that the Celtics are not a top destination for Davis due to the uncertainty surrounding Kyrie Irving re-signing with the team. Irving vowed to stay in Boston at the beginning of the season, though Davis’ camp subscribes to the notion that the point guard re-signing is not a done deal.
Kristaps Porzingis and Kevin Knox headline the Knicks’ most valuable trade chips. New York will also have a top draft pick in June, which will certainly be among the favorites for the No. 1 pick leading up to the Draft Lottery.
If the Knicks land Davis, it would increase their chances of landing a second star. The team has long been a fan of Kevin Durant. Kemba Walker and Irving will both be available and would fit in nicely next to Davis.
Early reports of what the Pelicans may accept included Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma. Haynes believes Brandon Ingram would also have to be included along with other salary-cap fillers and other assets.

Yup he’s got Lakers written all over him
Knicks and Lakers probably want to get something done before trade deadline. Before Boston can put their name in the hat. Boston might have the most to offer with Lakers coming second and Knicks 3rd
Boston can’t trade for him until the off-season if/when they can restructure Kyrie’s contract. link to google.com
Correct. That’s why he wrote what he wrote.
Yeah, and they will have to re-sign Kyrie since he can opt out after the season.
If I were the Knicks, I’d be very comfortable protecting my pick Top 1 (or 2 depending on how they feel about RJ) and sending that to NOLA along with anyone besides Porzingis. Beating the Lakers and the Celtics to Davis would be worth more than just about anyone the Knicks could draft.
Sure, but why would the Pelicans take a deal without Porzingis? I don’t think the protected 1st rounder (meaning I have no chance at Zion) and Knox+ gets it anywhere near New Orleans saying yes.
Yeah, Knox plus even an unprotected 1st rounder won’t do it…just because the Celtics can offer two unprotected lottery picks
How about Frank, Knox, 2 no. 1 (’19 and ’21)
Going to have to take Porzingis, because if the Knicks have both him and AD, that 2021 pick will be useless with them being in the East and crushing people.
Trier would most likely have to be in the deal too. He’s shown enough upside to be considered a sweetner in a deal. That 2021 pick doesn’t hold a ton of value if the Pelicans think that the Knicks could be a contender by then and Ntilikina hasn’t shown enough yet to say he’s a major piece of a trade. An Ingram/Ball/Hart offer (before considering draft picks) is better than Knox/Ntilikina/Trier so the Knicks would have to seriously up the value.
They gotta keep Kuz and Hart if possible. I’d send Ingram, KCP and Zubac as a starting package. Obviously gotta match salary so there going to b another piece or 2. But I wouldn’t offer Ball right away. I’m not sure what salaries actually are. But u got McGee, Beasley and Rondo I’m expiring contracts. And Wagner who isn’t getting much burn on a first round salary. So there pieces to work with. But if it takes completely gutting the roster they still aren’t a team that could beat the Ws if they lose Kuz, Hart, Ball and Ingram.
I think ultimately, they would have to include Kuz and Ball along with others. Pelicans would want the best offer possible for a player like AD. Specially if they have to deal with the Lakers.
Anyone but Ball.
Said it before, can’t trade 21 year old Jason Kidd in a big package for prime Hakeem Olajuwan.
Kuz, Ingram, Hart, Zubac, pick(s), + salary match (if necessary)
Literally everyone not named LeBron is expendable. Even if that means punting on this season. Just get AD in purple and gold
Yes. But ideally keep Zo too.
Knox or Porzingis or this years pick have to be involved in any package. I think THJ and Robinson would also be of interest
Sporting News lists ESPN Trade Machine offers that work. I like the Sixers getting AD and C.J. McCollum, New Orleans getting J.J. Reddick, Ben Simmons, and Zach Collins, and Portland gets Tim Frazier, Markelle Fultz, and Jimmy Butler. Rich Paul wants AD traded in a week. He also wants Luke Walton fired. Jeannie Buss wants to keep Luke Walton. Jeannie wins. The Pelicans management won’t trade AD in a week because Paul wants them to. Never happened before with a superstar. Won’t here either.
That’s a lot of moving pieces. I had something similar but a 4 team trade with La, NO, NY, and Memphis.
LA gets AD, Payton and Vonleh
NO gets Ball, BI, JJJ attached with Parsons
NY gets Conley and Randle
Memphis gets Kantar, KCP, and Hardaway Jr.
A lot of moving pieces but the numbers match, teams continue to tank, teams rid themselves of bad contracts, teams build for the future and get younger and one team(s) make a playoff push. Pie in the sky
So you have basically turned Memphis into a dumpster while taking away the guy they plan on rebuilding around? Um, no.
So having high priced players and still suck makes more logic behind retooling? They want to trade Parsons so they’re gonna have to add something of value to it. They would receive picks from other teams in the trade. They would still have Gasol and THJ.
Dude, you’re wrong on this one. Just accept it and move on.
That’s a terrible deal for Memphis. Literally no reason for them to move JJJ even if it means getting rid of Parsons. Unless they’re getting multiple unprotected first rounders, this is as bad of a deal as you can draw up. Even then, why trade JJJ for minor cap savings and picks when JJJ has as much upside as nearly any player in this upcoming draft.
Lol what? TJ McConnell would be the Sixers only PG in that scenario. That’s a negative trade for the Sixers.
Let alone Embiid and AD either wouldn’t work, wouldn’t get along, or both.
Knicks #1 draft picks is a good start. lakers would need to lead with Kuzma and 2 more top young players. lakers draft picks are low priority since they will be in the back part of the first round. Of course laker fans do not want to give up Kuzma but to get Davis that would be who NO wants.
Spot on. Although a lakers pick this year and in say 5 years could interesting. Come that time lebron will be off his contract and lakers could be rebuilding again
Same idea as the rockets giving up 4 first rounders. In 4,6,8 years from now Paul and harden will be done and those could be lottery picks
Even if LeBron leaves in a few years they have enough young talent with Davis to not be a lottery pick team. Knicks is a no brainer on getting a good lottery pick first years.
All the lakers young talent would be moved for Davis and the Knicks would add to porzingis and A.D. so even next year they could be a playoff team
I’d explore possible 3 team deals to get this done. Possibly Houston with their pick and want KCP.
Houston isn’t going to help LA get Davis. But I could see Houston helping NY or Boston land him if they don’t have the goods themselves.
Knicks would have to throw their 1st unprotected and salary pieces. Tough call for them but I think that would the only thing that could compete with lakers pieces
I think it is a good year to deal an unprotected 1st. The draft is pretty weak outside the top 2. Do you want to risk getting the 4th pick and paying a rookie that would probably go 10th in a stronger draft year $6 million per? I say offer THJ, Knox, Ntikilina, Robinson, and the 1st. It’s worth it if they can clear out space to get Durant and Kemba to go with AD.
It’ll be interesting. That’s true but as N.O you’ll be thinking the same thing and none of those players are worth anything in my opinion whereas Lonzo is a solid young pg and kuz averages 20 already. Ingram is still young too and will average 20-24 points at some point in his career
True, but a rebuilding Pelicans team is more likely to gamble on getting one of those top 2 picks. Especially since they would have two chances at them with the NY pick and their own which is likely to be top 5-10 as well.
I’d be cool with Lakers trading LeBron for Zion lol
Ya they could pull a move like the Kings did with them and trade him to tank and move up the draft this year as well as getting other assets. Lakers would help short term so in that case Knicks pick would be more valuable
It’s amazing how NBA power can totally shift in a moment. Instead of Kyrie signing with C’s and Ainge dealing assets for AD, the Knicks could suddenly have both Kyrie & Davis this summer.
Kyrie and AD are besties, so whererver AD ends up, Kyrie will sign with too.
Can see them in NY, and have Durant try to jump on board
I hope the Celtics might be considering trading Irving if Davis happens to land with the Lakers or Knicks before he might walk away.
knicks can’t trade their pick no way 33.3% of Zion i think it’s safe to say they aren’t trading for AD Knox and others aren’t enough at least i don’t see it
If the Knicks don’t get Zion it’ll be extremely tough to recruit and be competitive in the next couple years and porzingis could leave. A.D. would help recruiting and potentially land another stud. Either way it’s a gamble and a tough call
I would hate for the Knicks to fall to the same trap again: quick fix attitude and impatience. They have a nice young core group, including a hopefully recovered Porzingis and a chance to snag Zion Williamson. Add to this possibility of signing top free agents, and the future looks bright for the Knicks. Robinson, a healthy Porzingis, Williamson, Kevin Durant, Vonleh, Kornet and Kevin Knox in the frontline; Ntilikina, Mudiay, Hardaway, Trier, Dotson and maybe, Courtney Lee in the back court. That sounds a team that can compete!
I don’t think they get the deal done without him, but the Lakers should try to do everything possible to keep Kuzma in any potential AD deal. Ingram, Ball, Zubac, Hart, Wagner, first round picks should all be on the table.
Either way, I don’t see New Orleans making a deal until the offseason since they’re going to at least try and float the super max to AD. To boot, I don’t see any team blowing up their team mid-season to make a deal. The Lakers would likely have a nightmare matching salaries while taking back enough players so the Pelicans are within the roster limit. The Knicks would have to bank on signing a star in free agency since Porzingis is a giant question mark in regards to how he plays when he comes back and they don’t have enough talent after that to say they are a better situation than New Orleans (AD isn’t going to resign with the Knicks if he has to carry the team every night). Barring another team making a surprise offer, I think it will go down to the Celtics and Lakers in the offseason. Knicks won’t be competitive enough (barring them signing another star) to make them an appealing competitive destination to AD and the Heat don’t have enough attracting assets imo to get a deal done.
The Celts will get an audience before a deal is done. Pels would be idiots not to hear them out. I think the deal waits until the lead up to draft in any event, but certainly it waits for the Celts best draft time offer if they indicate they’re open to putting Tatum in the deal. If not, then maybe the Pels bite on an offer now, 10% chance. Still makes little sense.
NO trade with Lakers, would basically mean NO have Lakers starting 5 from last season – Ball, Ingram, Kuzma, (I’d throw in Hart, KCP and picks (future ’19 and ’21) for Holiday aswell), to add to Randle already being in NO….
Randle, Kuzma Ingram, Hart, Ball
LOL LACANOLA
Only way Knicks get AD is if they trade either one of Porzingis or get the Zion Pick. Problem with that is AD don’t agree to extension if Porzingis is gone and Knicks wouldn’t trade Zion. So not happening imo.
Knicks know the potential power Davis brings to their future. Get him at all costs! One of the best in the game. Marquee names would love to
play with him under the Broadway Lights!
So you’d be comfortable with giving up KP or a top 2 pick (which is the minimum the Knicks would need to draw in the lottery to have a shot)? In either scenario, the Knicks aren’t any better than the Pelicans currently are meaning AD has to carry another team to wins. He wants to go someplace to win championships, not to do the exact same thing he is doing for New Orleans right now.
Would be nice to pair him with lebron then sign kyrie in offseason and leave celtics with nothing but young guys. Lakers with kyrie, ad and lebron could go against anyone and would be in championship for for another 3/4 years at least then when lebron retires kyrie and ad could front the team for another 3/4 years.
Kyrie isn’t signing in LA with LeBron. I don’t think there is anymore hurt feelings between the two, but Kyrie wants to be “the guy” for his team. Teaming up with LeBron would be counterproductive to that. Kyrie wants/is the alpha for his team…he can’t do that if he’s playing with LeBron.
