The NBA has fined Anthony Davis $50K for violating the CBA. It’s illegal under the agreement for players or their representatives to make public trade demands and that’s exactly what Anthony’s agent, Rich Paul, did on Monday by speaking with Adrian Wojnarowski and other media members.
“The fine is for statements that were made by Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, in an intentional effort to undermine the contractual relationship between Davis and the Pelicans,” the NBA explained in its statement.
The Pelicans were recently told by Davis and his reps that the 25-year-old would not be re-signing with New Orleans once his current deal expires and that he would prefer to be traded. The team’s front office responded in a statement on Monday, declaring that the Pelicans will make the deal on their “terms” and “timeline.”
The $50K penalty is the most that the league can fine a player without giving him the ability to file a grievance, Bobby Marks of ESPN.com tweets. Davis is making approximately $25.4MM this season and the fine represents less than 0.2% of his salary. For context, if someone made a $50K salary, that would be equivalent to about $98.
He’s lucky he is protected by the CBA, which likely limits teams ability to sue their players.
So, it’s basically a parking ticket for him, but it is a statement.
Getting the equivalent of a $98 ticket would still suck though.
Even though it is the same percentage of his income, it is not equivalent. It is the same %, but the remaining income after paying the fine is far greater than a person making $50k. 99.8% of his income is still much greater than 99.8% of someone making $50k.
You dont say….
…but a percentage is a percentage…
Don’t agree with fine. Players can’t say they want out but teams can & do say they wanna trade certain players… Seems unfair, teams totally lack loyalty with the players they sign. SMH
It’s agreed upon in the CBA, the players agreed to it.
I can’t recall a single time a team said they wanted to trade a player publicly prior to/without trading them first.
@jbl, are you hiding under a rock? Teams do this all the time. Here’s just one example, the Bulls have openly stated they are trying to trade Lopez and Parker. There are thousands of examples of this.
Millions even
Gregg Popovich may have told the Pelicans not to cave in to the Lakers. Love it! (Amico Hoops)
I hope he gets traded to the clippers
That’ll show him!
Why not fine Kawhi, Butler, PG13 etc. as well? Unless I’m missing something this seems like the same as their situations and many others that have requested trades. Not saying anyone should be fined but the league should at least be consistent.
