Kristaps Porzingis is unlikely to play for the Mavericks this season as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee suffered a year ago, Dallas owner Mark Cuban told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
This comes as no surprise, as the Mavs view Porzingis as a long-term asset. They acquired him in a surprising blockbuster trade with the Knicks on Thursday.
He’ll be a restricted free agent this summer, at which point he could sign his one-year qualifying offer, sign an offer sheet with another team, or negotiate a new deal directly with the Mavs. The Mavericks were willing to gamble that they’ll lock up Porzingis this offseason or the summer of 2020, when he could become an unrestricted free agent.
An All-Star a year ago, Porzingis averaged 22.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and 2.4 BPG with a .439/.395/.793 shooting line in 48 games in 2017/18. He has yet to play this season and will obviously have to scrape off a lot of rust if he doesn’t play until next season.
Even the rust-scraper will be rusty by the time Zinger takes the court. There’s too many basketball shutdowns going on all over. I’m not going to call him Zinger any more… going for Porz.
“Unicorn” is kind of an embarrassing nickname IMO.
(So says someone who chose ‘x%sure’)
Unicorn, goat, freak, resign, these words already had meanings, far from what they are being put to in basketball of late.
Worst kept secret in the NBA. Dallas rolls the dice, KP signs extension despite not playing 2018 (a la like Kevin Love with the Cavs, when he got injured) also see KP as type to reject extension, take QO who knows if re-signs?
Dallas’ best bet is if KP got max offers from other teams, KP agrees, and Dallas matches — But I think this scenario is unlikely after his lost 2018 campaign…
Lol, so wrong.
Best thing the KNICKS have done …..
Don’t need another disgruntled, Fragile phoney
Absolutely. Guy got a little too big for his britches.
My question that I would love to have a sports reporter ask the Knicks is: How many meetings have you had with KP since the new regime came in?
My opinion is that KP was skeptical about Knicks future. How much effort did they put into changing that skepticism into optomism. Did they acknowledge his concerns about the past and the direction if the franchise and make a legitimate effort to persuade him?
It was understandable that he was skeptical. That doesn’t mean he didn’t want to be here..but that he had concerns. So you have a young budding star at 23..the best homegrown talent since Patric Ewing.
This trade only looks prudent if
1. They made it a top priority to include KP in the loop and get his feedback and keep him engaged
..motivated. Remember Knicks have been a circus and he has experienced that firsthand.
So when they say KP wasn’t all in How about them…were they all in? What came.first chicken or egg?
2.or They didn’t see winning a championship in next 3 to 5 years with KP and draft pick and limited cap room for free agents. That they didnt value Kp as a franchise player who could be the centerpiece to carry team to a championship.
The story we get in the media is to simple.and sanitized. Would like to know more.
Being a Knick fan since Willis Reed entered the court in 1970 and defeated the Lakers in the Championship with his courage and the fan reaction.
That team was magical.
I am hoping for a starting 5 next year that is also magical..something like
Frontcourt
KD
KNOX
DeAndre Jordan
BACKCOURT
KYRIE
RJ BARRETT
Off the bench..Smith or Mudiay at point. Center Robinson..forward Lance Thomas. 2 guard Trier
I think that lineup puts us in a good place.
Compete at top tier in east with Boston Milwaukee and Philadelphia.
That team has 2 players and nothing else even remotely championship caliber. They would get exposed for lack of depth
