FEBRUARY 7, 12:36am: The trade is now official, the Wizards announced in a press release.
FEBRUARY 6, 10:19pm: Washington has agreed to trade veteran forward Markieff Morris to the Pelicans, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic. The Wizards will get Wesley Johnson in return, according to Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington (Twitter link).
Between this deal and one earlier tonight that shipped Otto Porter to Chicago for Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker, the Wizards have dropped below the luxury tax and won’t be subject to the repeater tax, Hughes adds (Twitter link).
Morris makes $8.6MM, while Johnson is at $6.1MM, so Washington saves $2.5MM in salary just from that trade in addition to sneaking below the tax line. Both players have expiring contracts.
The Wizards also sent their 2023 second-round pick to New Orleans, tweets David Aldridge of The Athletic. Washington received a 2023 second-rounder from Chicago in the first deal, so the team didn’t mind parting with its own.
Now the Pelicans are making their push for the 12 seed.
I hope he gets bought out
What the freak is happening today
Randle or Mirotic? Or Moore?
Its the wesley guy
That Awkward moment when NBA trade deadline has a hotter stove, than all of MLB FA up to this point haha
Don’t tell me Ty Kelly signing with the Angels doesn’t get you going
Baseball is the boiled cabbage of pro sports: it’s ugly to watch, it stinks, and old people love it.
Baseball can eat a bag of d*cks.
I don’t see why people feel the need to say things like this. You don’t have to like it. Many people do.
Agreed
This is why parents need to do a better job with their kids
I believe they’re out of the tax now.
where will Ariza end up
I’m hoping my Lakers but I could always see him staying
If you mix Portis and Parker you get Porter this deal makes so much sense
Lmfao stop
Lol man…my first thought was i have 2 fantasy league teams, and one i dropped portis for porter, and the other porter for portis. Bonus points for dropping parker for portis leading to porter.
Second, all 3 have last names that start with p and second letter is r.
Lol it’s a crazy transaction in terms of names. All 6 letters each too!
Genius Demps at it again, oh wait…
You mad hes waiting to get tatum instead of lonzo and his daddy issuea/turnover rate?
You’re crazy if you think Ainge promised Tatum in an AD deal already. This is a pretty questionable move for Demps since it doesn’t really do anything for the team. And he’s going to get fleeced in the offseason if he’s hoping to use the Celtics as leverage in an AD deal.
The Wizards didnt mind parting with their own 2nd wrong pick because Ernie Grunfeld thinks they are worthless every year and sells it
When he does, he takes Sato over Draymond. (Sato has made this decision look less awful over the last few years)
The Wizards still have a logjam at power forward. Sending “Kieff from one logjam to another, doesn’t make much sense. But that’s Dell Demps for us.
This trade has absolutely nothing to do with the product on the court for either team. This trade was all about getting the Wizards out of the tax and letting the Pelicans pick up a 2nd round pick for around $2.5 million. The players are almost immaterial in this deal.
Understandable
The NBA is going off and I’m loving. I hate to even go to sleep with not knowing if a big deal is gonna pop off lol. Thank God for the NBA because the Super Bowl sucked and MLB free agency has been non existence just about. Keeping my sports crave fed, thank you! Lol. Hopefully when I get up for work we’ve had more deals.
18 teams have made deals since the new york/dallas trade, and the from the remaining teams atlanta, charlotte, indiana, memphis, orlando and utah seem like they are a small detail away from making a deal. That being said, its 19 that have made deals cuz i forgot about the malachi richardson trade
And im mountain time, its an hour away from deqdline day
