An ankle injury has sidelined Lonzo Ball since January 19, but 2019 has still been an eventful year so far for the Lakers point guard. After filing suit against Big Baller Brand co-founder Alan Foster, Ball has now parted ways with longtime agent Harrison Gaines, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, who classifies the split as a mutual decision.
“Harrison Gaines has been a trusted advisor and close friend for many years,” Ball said in a statement to ESPN. “He guided my NBA career with integrity and always had my best interests at heart.”
Despite the timing, Ball said that the decision to move on from Gaines was unrelated to the dispute with Foster. According to Ball, Gaines “always had my back,” and their relationship “will always be bigger than basketball,” as Shelburne relays.
With Gaines no longer in the picture, Ball is in the market for new representation, and multiple agents have reached out to gauge his interest, reports Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. However, Haynes says that most of those agents “became uninterested” once they were notified that LaVar Ball is still very much involved in his son’s decisions.
As Haynes details, LaVar has met with a few NBA agents on behalf of Lonzo, and CAA is currently viewed as the favorite to represent the former No. 2 overall pick. Still, there are concerns about LaVar’s ongoing involvement and the family’s financial standing in regard to Big Baller Brand, sources tell Haynes.
Haynes’ report also notes that LaVar has been inquiring with agencies on whether they have the power to put his three sons – Lonzo, LiAngelo Ball, and LaMelo Ball – on the same NBA team. There would be multiple roadblocks in the way of such a plan, not least of which is the fact that LiAngelo is not considered an NBA-caliber player.
In addition to dealing with LaVar and the Ball family, Lonzo’s next agent figures to be instrumental in trying to secure a new shoe endorsement deal for the point guard, Haynes notes. Lonzo’s on-court future remains uncertain as well, as he could once again be at the center of trade talks this offseason if and when the Lakers re-engage the Pelicans on Anthony Davis.
Doesn’t matter who your agent is if you can’t hit a jumper or sink a free throw.
Or part ways with your dad.
Ball is a bust. Lacks toughness (thanks Dad), and injury prone. How nice it would have been to have picked Heald or Fox instead. Don’t worry though that brain trust of Jeannie and Magic will figure it out some day.
I get your a hater but lacks toughness? Dude shuts down the best pgs in the game with ease. Sure he cant shoot but the lakers winning and making playoff rides on his and lebron success.
He hasn’t shut anyone down since mid January
“Haynes’ report also notes that LaVar has been inquiring with agencies on whether they have the power to put his three SONS – Lonzo, LiAngelo Ball, and LaMelo Ball – on the same NBA team.“
Sons not seasons.
Fixed, thanks.
Averaging 10, 6, and 6 is a bust?? I’ll take that any day! And shooting 1 free throw a game isn’t a big enough sample size (granted he needs to get to the line more). He shot 70% in college.
For where he was drafted, who came after him, his injuries… you have to regret the pick as a LAL fan.
He isnt terrible but another cant shoot guard Jason William’s, he went before Dirk and Pierce at #7 Kings prob regret that draft choice. It’s pretty common to regret the player your team drafts. He could be a bust if he becomes a strictly reserve role player as the #2 overall pick. Even if hes somewhat productive. Like I view Evan Turner as a somewhat bust for the Sixers, some fools decided to give him a big contract which is why he plays so much imo. But as the #2 overall and guys that went after hes a letdown.
There are def degrees of a bust. He isnt Adam Morrison or Markelle Fultz just yet. But for all that hype.. hes looking like Greg Oden, yea productive when he plays, but always injured and Ball – his legs are made of glass.
For a number 2 pick yes it is a BUST. Playing limited games yes it is a BUST. Being an ongoing Circus yes it is a BUST. Having “ Daddy” out there stirring the pot daily yes it is a BUST.
All I know is IF he can stay healthy, he’s not a bust. Players averaging at least 10, 6, and 6 are Harden, Giannis, LeBron, Durant, Westbrook, DeRozan, Doncic, Jokic, and Ben Simmons. That’s some pretty elite company.
I’m sorry, but I sure hope you’re being sarcastic. That’s the funniest post I’ve read in some time. Thanks for the chuckle.
His dad can go away, though.
Looking at the team that was on the floor last night, Ball’s brothers might have been an improvement. Looked like the Warriors were playing a G League team or one from the AAF!
You all are too loose with the term bust the only legitimate bust in the last 10 years was Anthony Bennett. Fultz went 1st overall and Philly traded up for him and he might not turn out a total bust. They’ve only been in the league for 2 years. Hopefully with Lonzo dropping BBB he can get some quality designed shoes catered to his style of play.
If Lonzo can stay healthy and distance himself from Lavar he could be special. The sample size isn’t big enough to say Lonzo will be a success, but I see potential for elite D and court vision. The only way Lonzo could be a bust is if he can’t get healthy. Haters feed off ignorance and it’s sad,i try and be realistic even with teams and players I really don’t like.
