The Celtics are looking for a team with cap space to absorb Aron Baynes‘ $5.4MM contract for next season, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Baynes has an expiring deal, so it would only be a one-year commitment.
With Kyrie Irving and Al Horford both expected to leave, Boston is trying to shed salary for a run at another free agent. By unloading Baynes’ deal without taking back money, the Celtics could reach about $23MM in cap space. The team could get to $34MM by renouncing its remaining free agents, notes Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston (Twitter link), but that would mean parting with Terry Rozier and Marcus Morris.
Baynes, 32, managed just 51 games this year in an injury-plagued season. He averaged 5.6 points and 4.7 rebounds in about 16 minutes per night.
Wouldn’t be a bad backup for Bamba or Ayton to learn from. If Boston attaches a 2nd rd pick they can match with Charlotte on Tony Parker’s contract
article says the celts don’t want to take back a contract. they want to match with a team that has cap space to absorb the contract.
He’d be a decent replacement for Looney in GS! Played that role well for the Spurs…
Suns?
Durant had surgery in NYC by a surgeon that works for the nets. Didn’t he telegraph his intentions? If he was staying, surgery would have been at Stanford.
No it wouldn’t. You have the surgery wherever the best doctor that you trust is located. Cleveland Clinic is world renowned for some of their specialized care. Plenty of athletes from various teams have had surgery there. Doesn’t mean those guys had interest in joining the local franchise.
Warriors don’t have cap space nor a trade exception (i think). they would have to send out a contract which is what Boston is trying to avoid
That Dr is renowned, and I’m pretty sure he did Durant’s previous foot surgery, so tha let part is just coincidental
That surgeon was also with the Knicks prior to the Nets.
No. NY HSS is the “mecca” of orthopedics and sports medicine. Unless, you’re seeing the Great One in Alabama.
Lots of noise about Boston targeting Vucevic. While that certainly wouldn’t make them championship contenders he can score and he can board. Him, Tatum, Brown, Smart and Hayward would not be bad group at all to start with. Still looking at a second round exit though.
That makes sense as a replacement for Horfod, and it would be interesting to see how much money he’ll command, as a big in this market. He isnt the defender Horford is, but has improved the last few years, and can provide rebounding help the Celtics have needed at that spot in certain matchups, and he can be used offensively in a fairly similar way to Horford in certain areas of the floor.
Sixers fans everywhere would like to kick Doug Collins squarely in the nuts for refusing to play this kid.
Hot Ford to Dallas seems likely with Cuban’s deep pockets and the fact that there is no state income tax in Texas.
If Marcus Morris signs elsewhere maybe Celtics trade with Memphis for Jae Crowder
NO!!!
Didn’t he opt in with an assurance from the Celtics that they wouldn’t trade him?
The understanding is he will go to a contending team.
Garbage in Garbage out
haha i say that all day about my job
Spurs kind of Center.
He started with the Spurs
Matt Bonner started with the Spurs. Doesn’t mean he’s good.
Matt Bonner started with the raptors.
Nice backup big man. I’m sure there are multiple teams that would like to play him 20 minutes a night. Celtics should be able to get a future 2nd for him.
If they unload Baynes & renounce everyone, can they afford Kemba?
Barring that, I wouldn’t mind seeing them take a run at Paul Millsap if Denver declines their team option. He’d be a good enough fill-in for Horford & they might be able to get him cheap enough to retain Rozier & Morris.
Lakers. 10-12 mins off the bench. No pressure to score. Just rebound, set solid & immovable picks, provide tough, physical & painful presence inside the paint. Perfect role for him.
