8:25pm: The Mavericks and Bulls also contacted Beverley today to set up a meeting, according to Sean Deveney (Twitter link).
6:43pm: The Lakers have contacted the representatives for free agent guard Patrick Beverley, tweets Brad Turner of The Los Angeles Times. The team has been rumored as a possible destination for Beverley, who has spent the past two seasons with the cross-town Clippers.
Beverley may be a fall-back option for the Lakers if they can’t land a third star to join LeBron James and Anthony Davis. L.A. has about $32MM in cap room, which it plans to split among several players if the search for another star comes up short. Beverley is reportedly seeking a three-year deal worth about $40MM.
After being limited to 11 games because of injuries in 2017/18, Beverley turned in a solid season this year, averaging 7.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per night and playing the super-aggressive defense that has defined his career. The Kings, Mavericks and Bulls are also believed to be interested in Beverley, while the Clippers would like to bring him back.
Now we are talking! This is the guy I want. I think they can land him and Russell and fill out the bench with the money they have. We don’t need another star, we have depth and Kuzma already is the 3rd star on this team.
that’s some purple-colored glasses if I’ve seen them! How much less than max do you think Russell will get?!
Somewhere between 20-27 million he cant make 32 because of years in league. Dlo plus beverly would be a nice go to if they cant get kawhi.
And you think Beverley will take 5M just because?
I dont think dlo is getting 27 million per year. The most a team could offer is 21 million per leaving lakers with 11 million
Why would we want Russell at that price. Don’t but into the Hype. He had one great month and several average months. Clearly the Nets feel that’s a position they needed upgrading st
Implant, four months is average? 24/7 from January through April. I mean if that’s average then a lot of PGs are below average.
Russell will command more from a team that requires him. He isn’t going to take discounts. Players rarely do. I know everyone thinks it’s possible because Davis did but in time, it will bear out that money matters to players. Especially to play in an exorbitantly taxed state as California.
20-22 million from what I read which five the Lakers 10-12 million to offer Beverly. Let’s be real here, everyone is always saying the Lakers fans are delusional, we wouldn’t get LeBron, got em, wouldn’t get AD, got em, now y’all gotta come up with something else to talk trash on. Get out of here. I’m far from unrealistic! I’m not just throwing guys out there we can’t get. I hope we get Kawhi just to really piss off you Lakers haters lol! But realistically I think we need to add depth and Beverly and Russell would be great and are within reach even if you think they aren’t. Keep telling yourself and ya Lakers fans we won’t get the guys we want and our team will prove you wrong by getting those guys lol
Lakers have 32. Beverly will take 13 and you have about 9 spots to fill ar at a minimum of 0.9 or the vets min of about 1.6. Lets assume a roster of crap minimum fillins… That is still about 11.
32 minus 13 minus 11 is about 8 to offer for Russell. These are rough numbers but how about letting reality set in.
And you say you should be taken seriously. You are EXACTLY throwing out names you can’t get.
Beverly is not playing for your peanuts anymore! Try to figure this out! Everyone wants him! 3/40 is conservative.
Your NBA math is flawed. DLO and Beverley first. Then go over the cap to fill in the minimums. I’m not saying this is smart business for the Lakers .
Everything you said brother. I’m not a Lakers fan, but I can’t stand all the hate. They have 32 million and two of the five best players in the NBA they can make something happen easily.
Of course they will make something happen; but math is not hate. I don’t even believe in this plan, even if possible; Russell is overrated and depth is a better choice.
Beverly will not knuckle under at contract time again. He did that once already.
It’s all about the Russell market, if it can work.
BStevens- good point on the sequencing.
I think the second LeBron opted out, people knew he was going to LA. Where else was he realistically going?
I’d be wrong about the AD thing but I was right that they’d have to gut the team to do it. And this could easily be Carmelo to the Knicks. Instead of waiting on AD, they jettisoned every part they had that would have made this team scary. LBJ got hurt last year. AD is perpetually hurt. That could all be in the rear view. But it’s more likely that the Lakers will look good regardless of who they add and falter once one of the two get injured.
Only a fool would compare Davis to Anthony.
This is a solid plan B. Still take Kawhi over this easily.
Yea I’m right there with you, Kenlwyfornia2. Kawhi is the only big free agent I’d want but if we can’t get him I’d go with these guys I mentioned.
Kawhi and ad will both age well, as the dont rely on speed to be great players. As much as i like kyrie he has paper thin knees and relys on his shiftiness and wheels to create space.
Irving is also a bad clubhouse guy and a moron with a huge ego. I wouldn’t want him on my team.
It almost seems as though Kyrie has some inner struggle, some deep rooted unhappiness that flips his mood from day to day. Maybe that’s just a woman’s perspective, lol. Maybe he’s just a jerk.
They gonna sign Kawai & Beverly , not a bad starting 5 AD , KK, LBJ , anyone and a Beverly
Not happening, fantasyman.
No false advertising there, it’s right in his handle
Kawhi is more likely going to the other LA team. There is no real benefit to him going to LAL to watch the team have an inability to build in 2 years.
Kuzma – starter, but not “star.” He scores points, and that’s about it. Not good at defense, and average at best in the rebounding department.
Plus Lakers would have the MLE wouldn’t they?
They do but the MLE isn’t going to bring in Beverley. It might bring in Green. Might bring in a handful of role players but Beverley has this one contract to strike big. 10/8/5 while harassing the best team in the West in the playoffs. If he signed for peanuts now, he likely never gets a big contract.
The Lakers will have the Room Exemption which is approximately 4.5 million to offer this season beyond NBA minimums if they sign a 3rd Star.
The mid level exemptions are for the teams over the cap which the Lakers won’t be until next offseason. Any team below the luxury tax cap threshold but still over the cap gets the full mid level, and any team over gets half.
LBJ, AD, Kuzma plus:
1. Beverley
2. DeAndre
3. Melo
4. JR
5. Korver
6. Ariza
7. Chandler
8. Reddick
9. Hill
