New Orleans won’t be among the teams pursuing Al Horford when free agency begins tomorrow, tweets Marc Stein of The New York Times. Horford created some excitement when he followed Jrue Holiday and Zion Williamson on Twitter earlier today, but that didn’t turn out to be a sign that he was planning to join them as a teammate.
The Pelicans won’t sign anyone to a four-year contract this offseason, Stein adds (Twitter link). Horford has indicated that an unidentified team is prepared to offer him a four-year deal in excess of $100MM.
Will Guillory of The Athletic confirmed Stein’s report, adding that the bidding for Horford got higher than the Pelicans were willing to spend (Twitter link).
Horford, 33, was a veteran leader and a source of stability on an otherwise chaotic Celtics team this season. His numbers remained typical at 13.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 68 games.
Sacramento?
I see him ending up with the Mavs. Pels were wise to stay away, too expensive and doesn’t fit their timeframe
Who’s the “lucky” intern who’s job it is to research what NBA player is following any notable celebrity? Yeezus.
Why on earth would anyone want him for four years. He should be on a minimum salary in 2 years time, these teams are crazy.
Depends on his role. He is a top-10 center. And he stretches the court, can distribute, and plays + defense. Hes older so yea. If team x says 3 yrs team y or a better come in with 4.
Horrors was already struggling at times last year. He had nagging injuries and needed days off for rest. Whoever gives him a huge contract will be sorry In year three and four.
I I’m a big Celtics fan and likes Horford a lot – he always played hard and contributed in more ways than just the stat sheet. But I’ve got to be honest… I really don’t see why/how he’s worth a 4year/$100M+ contract on any team. Especially at his age and with the non-cureable patella femoral (knee injury) pain that kept him out a few games last season. Like he’s a solid player and a great teammate but he’s not really a star and I just don’t see how he could be worth $25m+ for 4 years to anybody. At best he’s a 14PPG/8RPG player at this point in his career and unless he’s going to like the Warriors (which financially they cant sign him) I just don’t see how he could possibly be any teams “missing piece” to get them over the top. Nevermind what he’s going to be like in years 3/4 of that deal – ailing knee and all…
I ,unfortunately, completely agree. I like many diehard C’s fans, love Al. But I can’t fathom paying him 100 mil. He’s an incredible team guy,and impacts the game but with his age and knee issue….i just can’t rationalize 100 million. But I hope for him he gets it. I totally understand him needing to get a big payday towards the end of his career. I think he knows it’s nearing the end,and his knee isn’t going to get any better.
I actually might have to say I stand corrected now that he signed with the 76ers… don’t get me wrong I still think it’s a huge overpay BUT… he actually might be the tipping point for them given their current roster and losing Butler. Not that he makes them favorites to win it all or anything but he does certainly sure up their team more so than I thought any potential landing spot would if signing him!
This has Knicks written all over it. Who else has both the cap room and the stupidity?
I mean, many teams have one or the other…
Knicks are definitely stupid enough for this. I wouldn’t count on it though. At least until it’s confirmed no big names want to play there. I find it hilarious that the Knicks started the offseason expecting Zion, Kyrie, and KD and will ultimately end up with Al on an awful deal. Gotta love it
