JULY 14: Edwards has officially signed, the Celtics announced in a press release.
JULY 13: The Celtics have agreed to a four-year deal with their 2019 second-round draft pick Carsen Edwards, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. Edwards’ contract, which guarantees him $4.5MM in salary, is for three seasons with the fourth season being a team option.
As Himmelsbach notes, it’s not overly common for second-round picks to receive three guaranteed seasons but the Celtics are high on the former Purdue standout. Edwards, selected 33rd overall, has also played well during the NBA Summer League, averaging 18.0 PPG on 52% shooting in four contests.
In his junior season at Purdue, the 21-year-old Houston native averaged 24.3 PPG and 3.6 RPG in 36 games.
Kid has potential to be the steal of the draft
Agree, why didn’t the Wolves go after him as they sure need 3 point shooting!!
Instead Wolves got the other steal of the draft! Brandon “clicker” Clarke, so called (by me) because you have to go back and see that again. Also that tagged-on ‘e’ should lead to something.
“Gusto” also works for either Clarke or Edwards because they both have it.
Brandon Clarke is on the grizzlies
But hey at least he came up with some “amazing” nicknames… LOL
Right Wolves got Carver & Nowell. Still good picks at their slots and Wolves were not in position to draft Edwards.
I love this kid. He’s a scoring machine… needs to work on his athleticism. He’s ripped, but not athletic. Better training can help.
Jared Bayless.
Does Edward’s project as a PG or SG with the C’s/NBA? His game/stats seem to indicate that he’s more of a 2 than a pure PG but not many guys 6’0″/6’1″ can stick anywhere else than the 1 in the NBA. I feel like that’s really the only thing standing in his way of becoming a true steal of the draft… and it’s totally possible he overcomes it… will certainly be interesting to watch and see how things play out in Boston for him this upcoming season!
He’s a bit of a hybrid. He is ball dominant and has decent ball handling skills, but he’s a scorer first, does not have great playmaking instincts. But… these days, does that matter? Wings and 4’s are facilitating these days. Centers don’t post up anymore. So long as everyone is a willing passer and you have cutters, you’ll find someone open for a three. That’s the game today. It’s not essential to have that one guy who’s making all the plays with his distributing.
This guy’s far from a hybrid.
He’s a 6-1 shooting guard.
A gunner.
Love the kids shooting ability and confidence . I was hoping the C’s would have drafted him in the first round. Getting him in the second round feels like a steal. I’m guessing his lack of height scared teams off.
Yes I agree with that, definitely a fantastic second round pick. Could turn out to be amazing no matter what his size is.
Fact the Celtics gave him that big guarantee means they see something. I see jerryd Bayless. 6-1 can score the ball, not really a point guard and his vision isn’t there…, yet.
He makes pretty good passes into the paint in a set play. I think he has solid court vision but doesn’t make the pass/right pass, yet.
Celtics think he will become that. Hope he does.
Love it, Edwards has looked great in summer. Can see him being a steal a few years down the road. NOW SIGN TACKO!!!
