JULY 10: The contract between McGruder and the Clippers is now official, per a release from the team.
JULY 2: The Clippers have reached an agreement with shooting guard Rodney McGruder on a three-year deal, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports tweets. The contract will pay McGruder $15MM over the three years.
Los Angeles picked up McGruder after the Heat waived him at the end of the season to avoid the luxury tax. He was not eligible to play in the postseason for the Clippers, but the team retained his restricted free agency rights by tendering him a qualifying offer.
In 66 games (45 starts) last season for Miami, McGruder averaged 7.6 PPG, 3.6 RPG, and 1.7 APG with a shooting line of .403/.351/.722 in 23.5 minutes per contest.
McGruder’s deal does not significantly impact the Clippers’ ability to sign a max free agent (Kawhi Leonard), as Bobby Marks of ESPN.com tweets. McGruder’s modest $3MM cap hold has been factored into the equation for Los Angeles’ projected cap room all along.
DEAL
It’s a big DEAL that’s why it’s UPPERCASE
Mcgruber!
Yes!
I wonder if he’s tried the celery trick?
I wonder who could use a guy like this? Two way wing who can shoot and defend. Only competition would’ve been fat Dion Waiters. Butler’s probably gonna wish he had Mcgruber instead of him.
Where are all the haters who criticized mcgruder when the heat waived him? Lots of “experts” said he wasn’t good, and he just got a three year deal.
Steal for the Clippers. They’re going to he really good defensively, regardless of what happens with Kawhi.
If no Kawhi, and they move Gallinari anyway since they’re surely already working on doing so, Mcgruder could be the new starting 3. Anyway a path exists to get out of the logjam at guard.
Disappointing Development.
Was hoping that McGruder would head back to the
Phoenix Foundation !!
Hard to believe when it happened. Not because the guy is any kind of great player, but too good to just cut on the chance that someone would claim him to get him off your books. If he clears waivers, they lose the player and get no tax relief. The non-playoff teams pass, but the Clips (foregoing a full playoff roster) put in a claim. Clips did a good job of collecting FAs with cap holds significantly below their market value. Real plus in a year you’re big game hunting in FA.
Anyone that posts here regularly knows about Rodney Mcgruder even if they haven’t watched the Heat play. Not gonna lie, I really wish that was a different move, but I wouldnt be surprised if the Heat did him a favor
And good call on the Clippers acquiring assets making significantly lower than their value. That’s why I had them in the playoffs last year, and why I compared that team to the Heat from a couple of years ago, before they paid everyone
Man y’all love a mediocre 3 and D wing holy crap hahaha
