It was a quiet first day of free agency for the Mavericks, but the team still has some irons in the fire and plenty of cap flexibility to work with.
Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News tweets that he believes the Mavericks are “in the driver’s seat” with Danny Green, though he cautions that could change if Kawhi Leonard decides to stay in Toronto — Green could join him in that scenario.
Besides Green, Townsend identifies Kevon Looney, DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein, Seth Curry, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as some potential free agent targets to watch for the Mavericks.
Let’s round up a few more notes and rumors related to free agency…
- The Rockets will be among the teams with interest in Andre Iguodala if the Grizzlies elect to buy out the veteran swingman, sources tell Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Iguodala is being sent to Memphis from Golden State in a cap-clearing move.
- Having used their cap room to land Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky, the Bulls will be in the market for a shooter or another big man with some or all of their room exception ($4.8MM), tweets K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune.
- The Timberwolves missed out on top free agent target D’Angelo Russell, but did speak to their own RFA point guard Tyus Jones on Sunday, sources tell Jon Krawcznyski of The Athletic, who speculates that a Jones reunion may be more likely with D-Lo off the table.
- In the wake of their sign-and-trade agreement for Kemba Walker, the Celtics are still working to determine which mid-level exception they’ll have at their disposal, tweets Mark Murphy of The Boston Herald.
Im confused why Mavs aren’t comfortable with Dragic..
Based on that underwhelming group, Goran seems like the best possible addition
Wouldve ruined their cap space for other deals. Plus, theyre thinking long term, not immediate. When they asked for Jones Jr and Olynyk, the Heat said no to Jones Jr. Id rather Dallas wait on Green and possibly Cousins.
What other deals? They’re not signing any big free agent. Dragic only had one year left. Better than throwing out another bad contract.
The possibility of getting Danny Green or DeMarcus Cousins is more appealing than Dragic. Also, a deal for Jones Jr would benefit the Mav’s better long term.
Danny Green was horrible last year. Lol.
And Dragic averaged only 3 points more a game, and you’re worried about missing out on him?
As I said, I’d rather have Derrick Jones Jr than any of them. Costs less and has potential upside.
Had one of his best seasons as a pro. You should watch him sometime.
If I had watched him, id have known he had one of his worst statistical seasons of his career. Bad stats on a bad team in a bad division. Id also have noticed he played more off the bench than ANY of his previous seasons, healthy or otherwise.
Still would take Jones Jr.
Sheldon was referring to Danny Green. I gather you are talking about Dragic.
Misunderstood.
Got Seth Curry anyway. Nice addition.
Not it’s not. Acquire assets!!!
Its just fine. Dallas playing the long game, not the immediate one. There are no ‘assets’ to be had in free agency in the Mav’s position. Simply filling roster spots until next summer.
The Timberwolves…LOL LOL LOL biggest joke in the league. Might help if Taylor sold the team and they hired a coach that has a clue!!
I thought that was the Knicks? NY better hurry and trade with Houston for CP3 to try and salvage their reputation as a team of excellence.
Even The Knicks aren’t dumb enough to trade for Chris Paul. Lol
You lost me at “the Knicks aren’t dumb enough…”
I doubt there are many statements that can be made true with that phrase.
Definitely the Knicks.
Why don’t the Bulls have the $9+ mil MLE? They are at the cap dnd they haven’t used an exception in years so what am I missing??
They were under the cap when they signed You g and Satoransky. You don’t get the Mid-Level if you used cap space.

Lakers about to build the best team ever assembled. AD, Kawhi, LBJ, Rondo, Iguodala, Kuzma, Seth Curry…
That’s … not the best team even in their division this year.
Those three together and healthy are the best pairing ever. E.V.E.R.
Yeah it is… klay not playing next year. And you know your team is stacked
when your talking about Lebron being your 3rd scoring option (assuming leonard goes there as well)
Rondo???? Too funny Jonny
well seth curry is a maverick, soooooo
I am a Mavs fan. We always whiff in free agency lol. I would love to take hassan whiteside and dragic contracts. Clears cap for miami. and they are both expiring contacts for mavs so it wont hurt our 2020 search for a free agent
You should go look at the 2020 free agent list before you want to save for the free agency.

Id rather go into the season with Doncic, Powell, Porzingis, Kleber, Brunson, Burke, and Hardaway Jr and see what they can do.
Iggy goes on tv and book tour…shoots off mouth about misdiagnosis….gone. Time to rebuild in the new arena.
Test
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Igoudala is on the Sixers radar as well for the right price. Would be a return to where he started his career would be a decent bench option for defense, could provide a little offense and coming from a winning organization.
Iggy goes on tv and book tour…shoots off mouth about misdiagnosis….gone. Built new arena…gonna rebuild the roster.
The warriors moves are super interesting. They are going to replace Durant with Klay at small forward. DLO and Curry is a great backcourt. Keep Draymond…. that’s a good team that will compete next year if they can hold on until klay comes back.
Still need a big man down the middle.
they will find a BIG but yeah I think it is a very interesting deal for GSW … BUT they will miss KD,IGGY and Livingston for sure not to mention Klay is hurt for most of the season next year.
Despite all the activity from EVERY OTHER TEAM in the League, the Wolves remain focused on contracts for: Henk Norel, Paulao Prestes and Bojon Dublievec.
