The Heat have signed rookie shooting guard Tyler Herro to his rookie contract, the team announced in an official release. Herro, 19, was the No. 13 overall selection in last month’s 2019 NBA Draft.
Because Herro signed for the typical 120% of the rookie-scale (h/t to Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel), he will earn $3,640,200 during his first year in the league and $17,188,836 over the life of the contract. If he ends up being a factor in a potential trade for Russell Westbrook, he can’t be traded for 30 days.
In his lone season at Kentucky, Herro started all 37 games he appeared in while averaging 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 32.6 minutes per game. He was named SEC Newcomer of the Year for his efforts.
As NBA cap expert Albert Nahmad notes (Twitter link), the Heat now have 14 players under contract after Herro’s signing. With a combined salary of $135.8MM, they’re $987K below the hard cap, which is not enough to add another free agent.
This is because while the rookie minimum salary is only $898K, the two-year minimum salary ($1.621MM) is used in place of the salary of a non-drafted rookie when determining a team’s salary in relation to the hard cap.
So right now, it looks like if the Heat are trading for Westbrook, it wont be for another 30 days. Could mean they’re out, or it could mean they plan on sending Myers Leonard’s expiring contract instead of Olynyk’s 2 years left, which makes more sense anyway…or a scary situation, they plan on sending back Winslow, which wouldnt be something I would want to see
The trade is definitely going to happen but Herro won’t be involved… nor will Bam. The last I heard, it’s Winslow, Derrick Jones Jr, Dragic, Leonard and some sort of arrangement with draft picks going to OKC. 44 million outgoing from Miami and roughly 44 million from Russ incoming to Miami due to his trade kicker. OKC is looking to trade Russ to where he wants to go, which is Miami. OKC’s objective in a deal is salary cap relief for this season and to get money off the books. Acquiring Dragic and Leonard gives them 30 million off the book at the end of the season.
Yo that’s literally the worst outcome. Also how would the Heat fill out the roster in that scenario. They’re hard capped but need to get to 14 guys
Winslow is good, but he’s not gonna be a star man… it makes sense to upgrade him with Russ. Winslow can only be above average at the point so keeping him along with Russ would be redundant. Also including Winslow likely allows us to keep Bam or Herro, if not both.
Winslow would play the 4 for now…
And I would 100% be willing to trade Herro over Winslow
Also after losing Richardson, they could use Derrick Jones. He is emerging as a legit 3 and D wing, possibly more, and he isnt making any money…there is no way in the world Westbrook is worth this much. I’m a Westbrook fan. He is one of my all time favorite players, but f that…pat riley takes advantage of situations. He doesnt over extend and get destroyed willingly. Literally makes no sense in every single way, including Dragic’s expiring
Miami would have Jimmy and Westy, good for a 1st round exit yearly, maybe a 2kd round splash.
OKC would trade the franchise, former MVP in his prime for peanuts.
Not sure how this makes sense for either team in the eyes of public.
Behind the scenes, OKC joyful for a rebuild. Miami could hope that Buckets and Westy mesh.
Yikes.
Why isnt Westy looking at the Magic?
Miami is famously fashionable.
I like SGA, who does wander a bit, being influenced by Dragic, who is precise & self-directed in his actions.
Winslow & Jones may help getting off an Adams trade and Leonard can replace him.
Brodie and Buckets definitely gets Miami to the semifinals but if Herro ends up being Devin Booker or Donovan Mitchell 2.0 or if Bam develops a shot? We easily become Eastern conference finals contenders with the Pacers, Bucks, 76ers. Nets and Celtics ain’t goin nowhere this season.
I knew they would
The figures for Herro’s rookie contract are incorrect. First year is 3.64. Total 4 year value is 17.19. The values you provided in this piece are for the number 14 overall pick.
Fixed. Thank you.
