The Rockets and Clippers continue to be the two teams most seriously pursuing Grizzlies swingman Andre Iguodala, Shams Charania of Stadium reports (video link). However both Houston and Los Angeles “seem to be at a standstill” in talks with Memphis, per Charania.
According to Charania, the Rockets aren’t entirely comfortable with the idea of going deep into luxury-tax territory for Iguodala. While Charania doesn’t specify what exactly Houston’s package would look like, he refers to “a potential sign-and-trade” — that would likely involve Iman Shumpert attached to a draft pick, as I wrote last Friday.
Currently, Houston’s team salary is below the tax line, but taking on Iguodala’s $17MM+ salary without sending out any guaranteed money could bump the Rockets’ projected tax bill up to about $20MM, says Charania.
As for the Clippers, Maurice Harkless‘ expiring contract is the most logical salary-matching trade chip for L.A. in any deal involving Iguodala. However, Charania hears that the Clips don’t want to part with Harkless in an Iguodala trade.
Both the Rockets and Clippers have explored three- or four-team scenarios that might work for Iguodala, per Charania, but that’s probably a long shot. Meanwhile, the Mavericks and Nuggets have also engaged with the Grizzlies on Iguodala, but neither team has really gained any real traction in trade discussions.
Marc Stein of The New York Times (Twitter link) previously suggested there’s a belief in league circles that the Grizzlies may be leaning toward keeping Iggy on their roster into the season unless they receive a trade offer that includes a first-round pick. We’ll see if that ends up being the case if no potential suitors meet their asking price.
Sending out Shumpert in a S&T is my favorite idea for HOU to improve this summer via trade. However, in Iggy’s case he would put HOU over the tax, meaning that HOU would need to match within 80% of his salary minus 100k. Signing-and-trading Shumpert at 120% of his previous salary (to avoid BYC) puts them short of matching salary in a 1-1 trade. Maybe one of their non-guaranteed second year players could be added to make the math work.
Rox trade Gordon to Mem for Iggy makes the most sense to me.
If they lose Gordon they have no scoring outside of Harden and Westbrook
Ya that sounds like a net loss. Gordon is there second best shooter now that Paul is gone. He’s going to be essential for spacing, whereas teams often leave Iggy open.
yall don’t think much of Austin Rivers … you could also bring in Jr Smith or Nick Young if you move Gordon. I think Iggy better serves this team then Gordon does IMO.
Trading Gordon for Iggy makes no sense. Why trade a good 3 point shooter, a decent penetrator and defender for an older Iggy? The Rockets only real deal is to trade Shumpert in a S&T.
Iguodala to Dallas for Brunson straight up. Grizzlies add more guard depth and Dallas can take Iggy using that 24 mil. Trade exemption
I am surprised the Mavs have not used it yet… although the mavericks cant really believe that iggy puts this team over the top ?
they should use that to try and get Beal or Lowry.
That exception (originally worth $21.3MM) only has $11.8MM left on it, so it wouldn’t fit Iggy. They used part of it to acquire Delon Wright.
ah good call Luke .. yeah so maybe a three way deal …
Mem – THJ
Mavs- Gordon and Crowder
Rox -Iggy
I think this deal works for all teams.
So Memphis would take on Hardaway’s contract while giving up both Iggy and Crowder? Um, no.
Smdh
Oh, thanks for letting me know. In that case than Iggy for Brunson and lee. It works in the trade machine and Memphis could just cut Lee
Iggy to Denver for Will Barton, who is a hometown hero in Memphis. Puts Nuggs into lux tax but is better long-term cap wise.
Sounds good, but Barton does not quite match and Denver’s roster is so deep they don’t really have a throw-in.
And what was up with Barton last year… sign big, then collapse… He may not even be tradable until he finds a level.
He was in and out of the starting five which can, I imagine, play havoc with your comfort level, energy and confidence.
Rockets need Iggy to make it to the Conf. Finals while Clippers need him to make it to the NBA Finals.
PJ Tucker and a Pick for Iguadala?
that could work if you bring back faried and or if bennet works out .. but if not you have a glaring need at PF.
Tucker’s a better defender and shooter, and is signed for 2 years at 10 mm less. Memphis would have to send the pick.
courtney lee and finney-smith for iggy… except finny-smith just signed contract so cant trade him until december…. maybe finney will say OK and redo the contract and get him traded to MEM in a sign and trade.
