JULY 26: The Sixers’ deal with Korkmaz is now official, the club announced on Thursday night in a press release.
“We’re excited to have Furkan back and look forward to his continued growth and contributions,” GM Elton Brand said in a statement. “He has a strong work ethic and he’s well-respected in our locker room. Having just turned 22, Furkan is a talented young player with significant potential, and we’re thrilled to have him on our roster.”
JULY 24: Free agent swingman Furkan Korkmaz has agreed to re-sign with the Sixers on a two-year deal, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets.
Korkmaz will receive the veteran’s minimum of $1.62MM next season and $1.76MM in 2020/21, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets.
The 6’7” Korkmaz, a 2016 first-rounder, averaged 5.8 PPG and 2.2 RPG in 14.1 MPG over 48 regular-season games last season. He also made four appearances in the playoffs. He saw action in 14 games during the 2017/18 season.
Philadelphia renounced its rights to Korkmaz earlier this month and it appeared he was headed overseas to play in Turkey. However, he ultimately decided to stay in the NBA and he’ll provide depth at the wings behind starters Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson. The Sixers now have 14 players with guaranteed contracts and a pair of two-way players.
I like this
For the price you can’t go wrong! Could be a future trade chip or get some decent minutes if he he plays some defense. The guy can shoot a little. I don’t see how this is a bad signing.
He can shot the ball, but he can’t play a lick of defense
Glad we did this instead of signing JR
Okay, some redemption here bc they slashed his salaries by 400k and by 1.9M good job Elton. Try and actually develop the kid into that Korver-type player now. He was a freaking Pro at like 15. He can shoot. His defense is like swiss cheese.
Just like JJ. So if he can come off the bench and hit some shots from a distance, I welcome him back with a pretzel.
With 1 roster spot remaining I’d love to see the Sixers sign Trey Burke. He would be a nice backup pg who at times can shoot it. Not sure what else is out there. Any thought?
I personally don’t think they’ll use all 15 slots.
They got Burke
Yea,seen that,im definitely not disappointed about it.Just thought they would keep the 15th spot open for in-season flexibility.Guess they really won’t need it,with plenty of players able to play multiple positions.Even the 2ways,Pelle and Shayok can cover 2 through 5.
Injuries, releases, who knows what can happen heading into the start of the season. You could be 100% correct that a spot will open up but on paper they looked really solid
What I was thinking involved the salary cap,as much as the open spot to add in-season.If they do need to make any adjustments, they’ll have to lose a guaranteed contract. And with 9 players brought in at the deadline or later, plus Smith,Milton & Bolden not having a whole lot of experience as well, some adjusting might be necessary.
The whole team around Embiid and Simmons has been re-done in the last 12-13 months.
Happy to have him back on this deal.
