After being traded from the Jazz to the Grizzlies to the Suns, Kyle Korver has now been placed on waivers by Phoenix, according to NBA.com’s log of official transactions.
The move was expected, since only $3.44MM of Korver’s $7.5MM salary for 2019/20 was guaranteed. The Suns needed to open up extra cap room to sign Ricky Rubio to his three-year, $51MM contract, and releasing Korver helps pave the way.
Korver is now on track to clear waivers and become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday evening. When he first reported that Korver would be cut, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski identified the Lakers, Bucks, and Sixers as the probable frontrunners to sign the veteran sharpshooter once he reaches the open market.
Korver averaged 8.6 PPG on .416/.397/.822 shooting in 70 games (19.1 MPG) last season for the Cavaliers and Jazz. A June report indicated that the 38-year-old – who is a career 42.9% three-point shooter – is expected to play for at least one more year.
Way to go James Jones. Make sure you never work in this league again
Ya cuz Kyle Korver was going to take the Suns to the promised land.
That’s not the point.
You gotta be wondering which team’s GM he is.
Yeah but they should’ve been able to at least fetch a 2nd round pick for a career .430 shooter from the 3pt line. Even in a down year he shot 38% last year.
Not at 7.5M. hes been traded 3 or 4 times bc of the non guaranteed portion of his contract. A trade to the Heat or Thunder would have been somewhat smart bc they can waive him and get further from luxury tax. Like Grant for Korver would have worked.
This deal and result was just the last one of a major series of errors and dumb moves by the Suns this offseason. Warren and a 1st to Indy for nothing; trading down 5 spots and getting Saric and some other dude; then using the 11th pick on a guy that was supposed to be a late first round pick at best. Finally, moving the 4th overall pick from two years ago and other parts for garbage coming back and the only decent part was now waived?
If he doesn’t sign with the Lakers it’s hello ‘Melo.
I don’t know. I think that ship has sailed. Don’t really want him in the team but honestly don’t think he would see significant enough mins to really matter either way. They already have about a full roster I believe. At this point I don’t think it’ll hurt or help them so I’m whatever about that idea.
Melo will never play for the Lakers.
I wonder if the Lakers snag him on a min contract. They got some shooters as it is already but if they get him that would be pretty awesome. I don’t see how people are clowning on their roster when they have two of the most dominate players ever on one team and one of them is him prime and not only dominant on offense but a great defensive player and also has a a good group of shooters too. This is gonna be fun without or without Korver
Would be a nice fit on the Sixers.
COME TO THE BUCKS BABY
This was always the plan. He was acquired in a cap space trade. Do people like Jackson or Korver better than Oubre? Basically what it came down to. Yeah, Jones is really going to screw up the winning machine that is the Suns.
Lake Show Bound???
How many spaces do the Lakers, Bucks and Sixers have left?
Lakers have 2 many one depending what they do with their draft pick
Thanks, Talen Tucker is not position-developed, so he could be two-wayed. They should get another big. So there’s room for Korver.
I don’t see the fit. Lakers have too many guys who deserves playing time
He’s going to the Lakers to play with LeBron again.
He’s writing a book. Going to that circus of the LA Lakers to play with LeBron in what will likely be his (Korver’s) final season would be perfect for his book…. will probably give him a couple chapters of material. At LEAST.
Can shed light on James Jones’ strategy in the desert? Collecting stretch 4s, didn’t address point guard. Maybe Jones doesn’t think this roster can contend in the West? If that’s the case, might as well deal Devin Booker and go into a 76ers style ‘Process’. Only half kidding, Booker is a keeper.
Here’s the strategy: Make the team better than the joke they’ve been for the last 3 years. Seems to have made Suns’ fans very upset. Guess they like bottom 3 finishes, as long as they look good on draft day relative to mock drafts. He finally did address PG in the manner it (badly) needed to be addressed.
When the sixers “did their thing” there was a lot better odds at the no. 1 pick though
3/51 for FA Rubio; r1er Ty Jerome
why not try and trade him 1st?
How do you know he didn’t try?
look up the article of the initial trade, from the get go it said they planned to do a buy out or waive him
Because Utah forced the Grizz to take him in the Conley deal because Utah couldn’t trade him for “nothing”, and the Grizz forced the Suns to take him in JJ deal because the Grizz couldn’t trade him for “nothing” – and, unlike those two teams, the Suns needed the cap space obtained by cutting him almost immediately after obtaining him. Like JJ, Korver’s contract had negative value. That’s 30 teams deciding it, as it was out there for all takers.
Suns: Need a PG
Suns GMs: Okay let’s draft a win or stiff.
Suns: Still need a PG
Suns GMs: Ok let’s trade for a wing and sign another much older wing to a 15M deal.
Suns: We need a GM.
Why did they trade for Bridges with Jackson and Warren on the roster? Why sign Ariza with 3 of the above on the roster? Why trade for Oubre with the 3 above on the roster? Why trade assets to dump Warren who is on the most team friendly deal for the Suns? Why trade for a SG that you think you’ll play at PG but don’t play at PG and are looking to dump after trading for him?
Drafted Bender, with Dunn and Murray available. Drafted Jackson with Fox and DSJ available. Traded for Bridges with SGA on the board. Traded out of a pick with White on the board. At some point you have to make a move that makes sense. I’m not even a Suns fan, and as expansion talks loom, I feel like Phoenix deserves an actual NBA franchise.
Oof, bender and Jackson over the guys you mentioned is pretty bad.
3/51 for FA Rubio; r1er Ty Jerome; good backup comboG Tyler Johnson; last year’s high r2er Jevon Carter. A full decent unit.
How many wasted picks and assets to just sign a guy? FA PGs available every of Rubios ilk. Carter, Johnson and Jerome are all backups 10-18 min guys at best.
The current GM didn’t take over until this past year, and this is his first off season. Jones, IMO, has properly diagnosed the problems (that have a team with young talents like Booker and Ayton still playing to a bottom 3 record). Whether he’s acquired the right guys, we’ll see. But I know he’s gotten rid of the right guys, and I think replaced them with the right type of guys. Warren’s contract may have been team friendly, his low IQ game certainly wasn’t. Nowhere to go but up.
Lol nowhere to go but up has bee their theme for years.
Sixers please to replace Redick
Korver is a poor man’s Klay Thompson… why not sign with GSW?
Poor man thompson? Not even close Korver has 0 defense ability. He only can do 1 things and shoot the ball. His is your 11 man off the bench.
Not for LA.
Wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Bucks jersey.
Hope he comes and finishes up where he started out
He could complete the cycle….Got traded to create cap space so the 6ers can sign Elton Brand. Then he later became teammates of Brand in Atlanta. Now he can come back and play for him.
He’s that final piece for the bucks but those other teams are good fits too.
