The Warriors have withdrawn their qualifying offer to restricted free agent guard Quinn Cook, league sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
As a result of the move, Cook will become an unrestricted free agent. That means he’ll be able to sign outright with any team without any risk that Golden State would match an offer sheet.
Cook, 26, was a solid contributor off the bench for the Warriors in 2018/19, averaging 6.9 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 1.6 APG with a .465/.405/.769 shooting line in 74 games (14.3 MPG).
However, the hard-capped Dubs have little flexibility to bring back all their free agents as a result of the D’Angelo Russell sign-and-trade deal that will hard-cap team salary at $138.9MM. It appears Cook will be one of the odd men out.
would not be shocked if he developed into a stud.
I agree. The guy can shoot and is always ready coming off the bench. For an undrafted guy he’s turning into a player.
Not sure if the Warriors we’re forced to rescind the offer or doing cook a favor and allowing him to be free. Classy organization either way.
Just curious how this is classy? As a restricted free agent is the market is less because teams have to overpay or Warriors would match.
Now that a lot of the money is dried up they cut him loose. Not saying they did him wrong just not really a sign of a “classy” org.
I don’t think I would categorize this either way as classy or not…there are still teams out there who can sign him….he could get some good $$ from the Lakers
I guess I would consider it a classy move because once they had heard he may have found a spot, just go ahead and release him so the other team doesn’t have to worry about the Warriors matching.
There Might have been a little verbal, hey I’d like to go play with Durant..” or something and they said great will let you go. Be free. No threat of matching the contract.
I don’t know I guess it’s not classy. I just thought I’d give them credit for thinking of the guy. Maybe I’m off base.
Do you actually understand the game? The dubs could not rest curry enough because cook can’t lead a team or even handle the ball well enough to trust in a big game situation. Shooting the ball well is not enough or Carmelo Anthony would still be in the league. And that for a guy that was a pg at duke and he has little to no handles and ability to run an offense.
Well I guess I don’t understand the game. Thank you for straightening me out.
I played one year of college basketball, but I wasn’t a starter so I guess I’m a knucklehead.
I played in plenty of men’s leagues and many times with ex-professional basketball players.
I’ve been invited to play in tournaments where the stakes were high.
But I guess I don’t “understand the game” because Quinn cook is not good enough to be a starting point guard in the NBA… he’s just a bench player. K, I appreciate it.
For the record I think all I said was “for an undrafted guy, he’s turning into a player,” and, that he’s always prepared to play come into the game ready to go.
Stud? No, but decent starting PG for a non-contender is possible.
He was streaky. When he was on he was great. But he had a month in middle of season he was ice cold.
Stud? LOL He is an undersized shooting guard who can not play defense. He is at best a 12th man on a good team. The Warriors kept him around in part because he was Durant’s childhood pal. Once Durant left Cook’s days were numbered. If Cook is a starter on your team your team is a disaster.
IDK @ digi & jkom seems like every time I looked up he was hitting a big shot in the playoffs against the ROX. reminds me a bit of mills from SA who had a really nice season and looked like he was about to turn a corner before taking steps back.
You ever watch him on defense? One word: awful
Lakers
Better fit with Philly, need shooters and a backup PG
Basically, they should try and get anyone who can shoot. There is not a lot left!
He would be a good pickup for a rebuilding or soon to be retooling team. My first thought is Minnesota, but San Antonio also makes sense.
Miami please.
Dallas should scoop him up immediately.
He seems like the type of player that would go to the Suns for no reason.
Welcome to the Knicks
Can see him going to Brooklyn. He’s friends with KD, they need a 3rd PG and shooter off the bench.
Earlier in the year it was reported he was going to follow KD anywhere he went. Which is sort of a sad report for a grown man lmao
He can shoot. So, he’ll have a job.
Somebody will roster a guy who’s made %40+ of his 3’s career, The Lakers(for example) could use more guards that can shoot right now, especially if they can get him on the cheap! Does he want to Win or want a little more money? That’ll decide where he ends up, but EVERY team could use a little ‘instant offense’ off the bench!
His talent level is ideal for China, right?
