The Warriors are expected to eventually explore trading All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell, whom the team agreed to acquire in a sign-and-trade with the Nets on Sunday, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times (as relayed by RealGM).
“D’Angelo Russell does not fit there whatsoever,” Stein said on the Dan Patrick Show (Twitter link via Andrew Perloff). “They just did not want to see Kevin Durant walk out the door with no compensation. … They will trade him. It’s just a matter of when.”
Golden State is reportedly on track to acquire Russell, guards Shabazz Napier and Treveon Graham as part of the agreement that will land Durant with Brooklyn. The Warriors have agreed to sign Russell to a four-year, $117MM contract.
While it’s fair to question the long-term fit of a backcourt made up of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Russell, it seems premature to assume that D-Lo is destined to be flipped, especially since the deal to acquire him hasn’t even been completed. The move to acquire Russell will also indirectly cost the Warriors Andre Iguodala and a first-round pick, and will severely limit the team’s ability to fill out its bench.
I imagine the Warriors will be patient in evaluating the fit in 2019/20, particularly with Thompson expected to miss or all of the season due to his torn ACL. Russell won’t become trade-eligible until at least December 15 once the Warriors acquire him.
Among the teams who previously expressed interest in Russell were the Lakers, who remain in pursuit of free agent forward Kawhi Leonard, and the Timberwolves, who are still in the market for a point guard.
Capela and pj
How does Dlo not fit at all? He can run point and shot create off on ball screens from dray while Klay and Steph do their off ball circus act and catch n shoot. Dlo can also play off ball and shoot it. On D there is a question of a back court with Steph but Klay 100% can play sf. Dlo is 6’5 and can attempt to guard shooting guards. All these “insiders” who think they know so much are idiots. If they really knew what they were doing they’d have a job in the league
Because DLo is a shoot first guard, just like Curry and Klay. While Klay is hurt it works out sure, but when he’s back that’s 3 guards, whose strongest ability is their scoring. At least Durant was a power forward. It doesn’t make sense long term at all, and I agree with the article.
With a max contract, Russell almost has negative value. He has a very short track record of that kind of quality and that was just to get that max. He will be scrutinized closely.
Get real. GSW has guards. They don’t need a max backup. Klay has seniority at 2G.
This is Wiggins’ chance… do it all right until Dec.15
Would love to see him on the Heat next to Jimmy. Come January.
Not happening. Unlikely that Butler and Russell to coexist
What the hell do they even have to trade for him?
as a Nets fan I’m happy to see Dlo land in a good place like GS so I hope they don’t go and flip him
Russell for Teague, Okogie, Bates-Diop
That’s not nearly enough for him.
Well it’s not like they gave up anything to acquire Durant in the first place. So they should be glad to get anything.
Nevermind, I mis-read your post. My bad
plus 4 first round picks
I don’t think Minnesota would move Okogie in that scenario. Okogie is looking like he can be a legit starting 3-and-D wing. I agree with @thewiggs11 that on paper that trade doesn’t seem like enough although I also don’t know if GS could get a significantly better offer. They could probably get a bigger name than Teague but might not get as much depth.
Bwahaha
Internet gms are worse than what the Knicks actually have
Tbh Scott Perry looks to be a good GM. Just bad ownership.
More like Okokie and Covington.
Or Wiggins. I think they’re wanting to move off him
Well all we can hope for is a strong start to this season for Wiggins (lol) and a deadline swap for Russell (again lol). I can’t think of a better roster for Wiggins to play on. He might thrive in hyper spaced offense. The warriors are a cash flush organization with a gaping whole at small forward that needs to look towards the future. I can dream…
I think it would be nice for the Warriors to trade him for a comparable SF who can shoot the three.
Perhaps swap with the 76ers for Tobias Harris if fit (short or long term) does not work as well as intended for both teams.
Philly gets a true point (with good size) and some additional outside shooting.
Warriors get forward who can play the 3 or 4 and shoot it extremely well (fills some of the void of KD).
DAR to Philly hopes died when Sixers sent Jimmy out of town. That was the only confirmation needed for us that the team sees Ben as the starting point guard (since evidently they viewed Butler’s presence as stunting Ben’s growth).
Do you have a link for that? It looked to me like Butler was stepping up and filling a vacuum. At least in the playoffs
Here’s a ridiculous idea – Warriors trade Russell and Green for Kawhi… Kawhi is everything Green is plus shooting… Seeing as sign and trade is all the rage these past 48 hours
Except Russell won’t be eligible to be dealt until December as the article states … I doubt Kwahi would resign in Toronto for the sole purpose of being dealt to Golden State in December when Russell is eligible
“Kawhi is everything Green is plus shooting”
What a weird way to describe Kawhi. You may as well have said “Kawhi is everything Green is plus he’s way, way better at everything”.
Actually Green is a much better facilitator and a more reliable rebounder. Also he doesn’t have a mysterious quad problem than requires games off.
Warriors have a lot of time to see if he fits the team. They need offense with Thompson out. If anyone can get the most out of a player its Kerr. Looney went from a bench player to a starter.
I am curious to see if the Splash Triplets can play together.
Klay and Dray can gaurd 1-4 and sometimes the five. So defensively they are fine with Steph gaurding the PG and 6’5″ Russell gaurding SGs
They problem will be just like this year are they big enough to compete against big teams? No true center will be a problem unless they can pick up a big man.
The 7 foot Jones will be their center.
T-Wolves don’t have a clear option at PG? What do you call Teague? I know they would prefer to upgrade but he’s still a clear option at this point.
Fair point. I’ve tweaked our wording on that.
What do you call Jeff Teague? Nothing nice.
Teague is J.A.G. And way overpaid.
Russell to Miami for Waiters, James Johnson and Bam Adebayo and a pair of future second round picks in January. Waiters and James Johnson would be nice bench depth, with contracts that expire in two years and Bam would be a quality center to pair with Draymond for the long run.
There’s nothing horrible about that idea.
The Warriors would get an athletic big in Adebayo, a stat sheet stuffer in Waiters, and a nice bench piece in Johnson.
Interesting…
There is absolutely something horrible with that idea.
Russell and Butler are a match made in hell. First off I have to imagine there is bad blood with Towns (under the surface) and Russell is one of towns best friend. Second, They are of a different generation of player. Staying up till 4AM on game day to play fornite. Something that clearly would bother Butler. Thirdly, Russell is literally towns but less mature. And we all know the problems Butler has had with “immaturity”(just so ironic but beside the point).
Why would DLO agree to sign with a team that’s going to trade him?
Money.
This is why I’m sort of skeptical that the Warriors would already be seriously exploring this option. (Though one answer could be that they were the only team willing to give him the max? Not sure if that’s true, just speculating.)
I think they are talking about moving him next season or off-season. Once they get klay back.
I don’t think they would have moved iggy and a first rounder if they were just going to trade Russell.
The trade does make sense if Klay comes back as a small forward
How about dlo to wolves for andrew wiggins and robert covington or dario saric?
Wolves get point and wiggins tries to fill the void of kd still young and would thrive next to curry and klay. Then you get depth with saric a floor spacing 4/5 or roco who can replace the loss of iggy.
Except Saric plays for the suns.
Hard to trade saric since he’s on the suns
Saric was traded to the Suns in draft day
Frankly, the idea of Russell, Curry, and Thompson on the floor together is frightening.
The obvious question is whether Russell of Curry can be effective without the ball in their hands. My gut reaction is “yes”. Curry coming off screens all night instead of running the offense would be a sight to behold.
At the cost of the hard cap and a lightly protected 1st, it might not be so easy to realize a net gain from two transactions. If they wanted Russell, it’s an OK price to pay, but is he really a better trade asset at max than Iggy/Livingston expiring (PG) contracts and the 1st-?
GSW could not turn down a fancy freebie and now must dispose of it because it did not fit.
Why on earth would Russell do this? He is giving up his choice of cities and he has final veto as he can just forced the Nets to release him or make him play out his Restricted FA contract.
This seems crazy
He got the max. They can trade you all they want, paycheck doesn’t change. George Hill didn’t care until just before the contract ran out; Russell the same. GMs fall for it every time.
