With Joe Johnson possibly headed to Detroit, several Nets veterans are pushing the front office to sign Carmelo Anthony, according to Brian Lewis of The New York Post.
Johnson said he was planning to work out for Brooklyn this week, but sources tell Lewis it hasn’t happened yet. He had a session with the Pistons yesterday, and The Athletic’s Frank Isola said on SiriusXMNBA, “From what I’m hearing, Detroit is the favorite to land Joe Johnson.” (Twitter link)
That may leave Anthony for the Nets, who suddenly have a depth issue at forward. In addition to playing without Kevin Durant, who may be sidelined for the entire season, Brooklyn lost Wilson Chandler to a 25-game PED suspension and Rodions Kurucs may be suspended as well over domestic violence allegations.
The Athletic reported that Durant and Kyrie Irving were appealing to management to add Anthony, and GM Sean Marks recently watched him play. Anthony spent much of the summer working out in Los Angeles with a few Nets players.
Taurean Prince tweeted a video of Anthony from those pickup games, along with the following endorsement: “Guarded him for a month straight. Same Melo only thing diff is the narrative ppl throw on his name.”
The Nets are eligible to move a suspended player off their active roster after the fifth game, so talks with Anthony could heat up by early November, if not sooner.
It’d be a good fit. Create a system. Then plug kd in instead
You have no idea what happens the very second Kaylee Irving feels he/she doesn’t get enough love or touches. Kaylee will demand a trade mid-season.
Replacing NBA players names with a similar female name. So funny and original.
Agreed. Poor execution, little tact.
Lenny Bruce was actually funny. You are not.
Oh cute, Clancy is sticking up for his gf Lenny. See what I did there?
Carmelo’s game and KD’s game have almost nothing in common… well, strike that. KD with the torn Achilles may play a similar game to Carmelo.
Marks will probably capitulate (like Morey did), but the history of signings made at the behest of a team’s current stars isn’t good. Hard to believe that Melo (already being a guy who helped establish the rule) will end up being an exception.
Melo belongs in LA, then they can make a trade for CP3 and once the 3 of them (including LBJ) can convince Wade to join them: banana boat!
After what Melo has shown the last 2 seasons, any team that is desperate enough to sign him can’t possibly be considered a true contender.
Houston is the living proof of a desperate team!
Some players are fan favorites, others are player favorites. Carmelo is the latter. He’s beyond being a legend in his time anyway and they can talk at the barber shop about whether he’s an all time great. But every time you hear guys in the league comment, it’s all positive. Tough call for the Nets, though, they’d have to be convinced he’d take coaching and not be a negative influence, take the minutes he gets without complaining, etc. ‘Melo has never shown that ability. OTOH he’s pals with KD and Kyrie among others on the squad, plus he already has a home there. Plus he’s Carmelo freaking Anthony. I don’t think the Nets will do it. They’re known for creative front office work, while this feels like a player-driven short-term stopgap. Not they’re style.
Melo >>>>>>>>>>> KD
The narrative has always been the narrative. It’s his numbers that have changed… His PER has been plummeting every year since 2013! Other stats also.
