The Grizzlies haven’t softened on their stance of resisting a buyout with Andre Iguodala, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link from Siva Kodali). In a report last night, Wojnarowski said teams with interest in acquiring the veteran swingman should be prepared to make trade offers.
“The message that Memphis has delivered to teams like the Lakers, Clippers and Rockets is that you’re going to have to trade for him,” Wojnarowski said. “‘We are not buying him out. He will not be on the free agent market.'”
Iguodala has been in limbo ever since the Warriors shipped him to Memphis in July to open up cap room. He hasn’t spent any time with his new team and is waiting for a deal so he can start playing again. Iguodala would be a valuable addition to just about any contender, but his $17MM+ salary makes it challenging for the top teams to work out a trade.
There’s more from the Southwest Division:
- The Pelicans should consider using Lonzo Ball off the bench now that Kenrich Williams has claimed a starting spot, contends William Guillory of The Athletic. Injuries forced coach Alvin Gentry to use 11 starting lineups in the first 15 games, but he has more options now that the team is getting healthier. New Orleans has played very well when Brandon Ingram and J.J. Redick are on the court together, and with Jrue Holiday holding one starting backcourt position, that doesn’t leave room for Ball.
- Ingram has displayed All-Star potential through the first month of the season, observes Scott Kushner of NOLA.com. The Pelicans didn’t reach an extension with Ingram before last month’s deadline, but Kushner believes a long-term deal this summer is virtually certain, even if it means the team has to match an offer sheet for the restricted free agent.
- Tim MacMahon of ESPN looks at how Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle learned to trust Luka Doncic during a sometimes difficult first season in Dallas. Doncic’s occasional carelessness with the ball wasn’t a good fit for a no-nonsense coach like Carlisle, but he understood that his rookie guard needed a chance to develop his game at the NBA level. “For the development of a great player this young, the best thing they can do is make mistakes and grow from those mistakes,” said former Dallas director of player development Mike Procopio. “You can’t freak out over every mistake. Rick understands that. Rick is intelligent. Rick knows this kid is the future of that organization. He can’t get in the way of that.”
Iguodala has the best job ever. Enen beats being the backup QB.
To me, as a warrior and iguodala fan, he’s lost a lot of respect. His ego makes him think Memphis should give him his entire salary not to play for them. He needs to suck it up and play.
Not at all. These teams that want him should make some type of a offer instead of playing the waiting game. Mavs should sneak in and snatch him up. Lakers act like they are owed Iggy. The longer those 3 teams wait more playoff teams will come in with a offer.
Him not playing is a team choice. If he refused to play in his own, they could take his pay.
Exactly. If they told him to play, he’d play. They’re afraid he might get hurt and they wouldn’t be able to trade him, so they told him to stay home.
lol
Have you ever heard of a Guaranteed contract.
Why shouldn’t Iggy expect his full salary again? He’s entitled to what he signed for, isn’t he?
I’m sure he’d report if Memphis told him to.
So you’re a Warrior and Iggy fan who is unaware that Memphis is the one who told him to stay home?
I really wish fans would get facts before they type.
Ken has a Rich +17 on/off. Sorry Zo!
Ingram is working so hard for that raise it’s worrisome. Along with Z-Will, the Pels have the thick and the thin at forward.
That is easy if Iggy wants the money, as he is entitled, then fine he & the team can keep with the impasse & everybody is happy with.
Now if he actually wants to play, the ball is in his court, take the pay cut & go to play somewhere else.
Either way whatever happens is by mutual agreement between him & the team.
So far he is the happiest by not playing, which is fine for him.
For his fans not so much, right?
Again, it is by MUTUAL agreement that he is not playing. Memphis told him to go home until they tell him a trade has been worked out.
I love how people want to turn this into some sort of crybaby player thing when it is not.
Again, the team DOES NOT WANT TO WAIVE HIM OR BUY HIM OUT. They want to get trade value for him, and are willing to wait for it to materialize. Meanwhile, they want him to stay healthy, at home.
Someone will give up something for that extra playoff push. A 1st + an expiring contract or 2 to match. Or a 2yr deal that can be traded next year. Trades that could make sense $ wise for playoff hopefuls with a future 1st attached:
Bazemore for Iggy
Ty Johnson for Iggy
James Johnson for Iggy
Courtney Lee and Justin Jackson for Iggy
Portland needs to roll the dice on Iggy.
I would, salaries match and Bazemore gives them less than ET did.
Agree completely with the Grizzlies will make out on the whole Iggy deal. Zero reason for a buyout with teams that could use him out there.
Grizzlies: Waiters, J. Johnson
Heat: Iggy, Josh Jackson
IF Iggy will play for the Heat vs the West Coast contenders.
They don’t want those players they want a 1st. Taking Waiters would be a lopsided trade for the Heat. And the salaries don’t match. Josh Jackson makes like 3M, 21-22M w Iggy. That’s compared to the ~30M of Waiters and JJ
Looks Josh Jackson is on the books for $7M as #6 pick plus $17M for Iggy is $24M. With $27M for Waiters and JJ.
A little rehab and move them as expiring this summer or next season no problem.
Grizzlies got a 1st to take him. No way they get another one to move him. Then again there are some desperate GM’s out there.
Best of luck ether way.
